The Day The Music Died Ep. 4

In today's video we go to northern Iowa to the town of Clear Lake. We visit the Surf Ballroom and Museum, the last venue that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson aka. The Big Bopper played. The venue still looks like it did in the 1950's which is pretty cool and they still have shows here. Afterwards we took a little drive to the crash site to see the memorial which is literally in the middle of a corn field. Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup were supposed to be on the plane but Richardson wasn't feeling well and didn't want to ride the bus so Jennings gave him his seat on the plane. Allsup and Valens flipped a coin on who would get the last seat on the plane. The event later became known as The Day The Music Died after Don McLean referred to it as such in his song American Pie.

In Memory of Fergus

My dog, Fergus, died on August 2nd as a result of spleen cancer. I only talked about him a little bit on the channel, but most of my recording sessions started with him curled up beneath my desk until he got tired of my yelling at the computer. Sometimes, he made his presence known in my videos, most notably in this episode of Myth (thanks for reminding me of this, Lethal)

We got Fergus five years ago from the Oregon Humane Society. I was working nights and both Katie and I thought that the house felt awfully empty with it usually just having one of us in it. We'd been keeping an eye on the Humane Society's website for a few months before we saw this weird dog that was under our rental company's weight limit (which he exceeded quickly after we adopted him).

They told us that he was a second chance dog from Merced County, California; he would've been put down if there hadn't been room up here in Portland. As far as anyone knew, Fergus was a street dog. He came to the shelter with worms, fleas, sunburns, moles on his eyelids, and a funny walk that always made me think he was trying to strafe in a video game. His gait came from fused vertebrae in his neck that caused nerve issues on the right side of his body.

He chose us. We threw a ball with him, we played and watched him stumble around. I wasn't sure. My wife and I sat down to think about it, and he immediately came and sat underneath our seats. It was settled.

Though Katie and I are still immensely sad to have lost him, we take solace in knowing that we gave him a much better life than he had, and indeed, much better than many dogs get. We always loved him, and he always loved us in his own way. I can't tell you how comforting it was to come home from a night shift and take him to the park to watch him romp around in the fog chasing squirrels. He never snapped or snarled, and only ever wanted to be warm, fed, and loved.

I miss him so damn much. Some people talk about losing a pet in blithe terms; it's just a dog and the like. I wish those sorts of folks could've spent five minutes with Fergus. There have been none sweeter.

Fergus was my wife's favorite photography subject, so we're lucky to have dozens of great

He was my companion, my shadow, my unconditional warm welcome and my heartbreaking goodbye.

Music: I've Loved You All Over The World by Willie Nelson

I Didn't Expect This in America!

Nashville's Honky Tonk Highway is bustling like India. The street is lined with live music bars, eateries, and chock-a-block with people out for a good time. Have you seen another street like this in the world?

The Honky Tonk Highway houses some of the most famous bars in the U.S. Many big stars got their big breaks in this district, and live music can still be found 7 days a week.

This is the heart of the American country music scene. Where the legends like Johnny Cash Show, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, and Willie Nelson performed once upon a time.

First, I take you along the honky tonk highway, then to live country music bars Redneck Riviera and Kid Rock's bar Big Honky Tonk, and we end by eating Tennessee's famous barbeque at Jack's Bar-B-Que.

Elvis Presley 1974 - Memphis live shows at Mid-South Coliseum, the Elvis Karate movie (Gladiators), Elvis cars, Elvis and racquetball & Las Vegas. The next installment of my potted history of the life and career of Elvis Presley - an Elvis biography. Where possible I've included video I've taken in and around Memphis relating to the period, taken during our 2017 and 2019 trips. No time for any Elvis recording sessions this year. Elvis performed live in his hometown of Memphis for the first time since Elvis 1961 charity shows at Ellis Auditorium. 5 shows for Elvis at the Mid-South Coliseum, one of which resulted in the 'Elvis Recorded Live Onstage in Memphis' album. 2 of Elvis hobbies intensify, Karate and racquetball. Elvis set up the Tennessee Karate Institute next door to one of Elvis's favorite theaters- the Crosstown cinema. Red West was a chief instructor here along with Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace. Elvis had the idea to make a 'Elvis karate movie' - Gladiators - which was planned and filming begun. The other interest was the suggestion of Elvis' doctor, Dr Nick - Elvis and racquetball was a way to look after his health. Elvis health proved that ultimately it didn't work completely as Elvis cancelled shows at Vegas and Lake Tahoe during the year. Elvis played football when he was younger and Elvis was at the Memorial Stadium to watch the Memphis Southmen play in the inaugural season. Elvis bought cars at Schilling Motors. Elvis favourite cars were Cadillacs but Elvis loved Lincolns and bought the entire stock in a weekend of spending!

1 March 1974 Elvis's first tour of the year begins in Tulsa, Oklahoma and will end on 20 March in Memphis.
5 Elvis shows in Memphis in March Elvis's first live performances in Memphis since charity shows at Ellis Auditorium in 1961.
Fairgrounds park in Memphis. Memphis Mid-South Coliseum.
And it's on 16 March 1974 that Elvis first played Mid South Coliseum. It was Elvis's first concerts in Memphis since the charity shows in 1961 at the Ellis Auditorium.
It's not just Elvis. The Beatles played Memphis Mid South Coliseum in 1966.
There is that famous film footage after John Lennon said that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus
that film footage of a ku klux klan member threatening to disrupt The Beatles show,
Although KKK members were outside the Memphis Mid-South Coliseum, this footage was actually outside DC Stadium in Washington.
But The Who had played here, Led Zeppelin, but Elvis played here 16 March 1974 was the first time he played Mid South Coliseum - played two shows that day at 2.30 and 8.30
That's been released on the Follow That Dream record label Hometown Shows.
Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis album which was released in 1974.
Elvis's performance of How Great Thou Art on this album won him his 3rd Grammy.
here on Elvis Presley Boulevard was the site of the Howard Johnson motel.
And when Elvis was playing the Mid-South Coliseum he also stayed here
Elvis playing racquetball with Dr.Nick
Here we are on Sanderlin Road and that opposite there is the the Racquetball Club of Memphis where Elvis and Dr George Nichopoulos's son, Dean, would come to play racquetball.
That building over there was another one of Elvis's favorite theaters Crosstown Theater to rent out and next door was the Tennessee Karate Institute Red West was one of the instructors.
6 September 1974 Elvis buys a Stutz Blackhawk, which will be the last car Elvis ever drives.
16 September 1974 Elvis puts on another karate display at the Tennessee Karate Institute.
So here on Union, used to be Schilling Motors, a Lincoln dealership. Elvis bought many Lincolns like Cadillacs,
And this would be just opposite where Baptist Memorial Hospital was, which would have been down there off Union.

Ep. 510 Mississippi Melodies - Tennessee Valley Uncharted

Aerial heads down to Clarksdale, Mississippi, hoping to shine a spotlight on the innovators and artists that have impacted the music of America. Her first stop is the Devil’s Crossroads, where according to legend, musician Robert Johnson sold his soul in exchange for mastery of the guitar. A local sits with her at Hopson Commissary to give her the lowdown on the infamous tale, as well as other forgotten stories that surround the area. Then, it’s all music and dancing at the Deep Blues Festival. Aerial visits both the Ground Zero Blues Club and the New Roxy to talk to the owners of these remarkable venues about what blues music means to the city. Afterward, she stops into Deak’s Mississippi Saxophones and Blues Emporium, where she meets owner Deak Harp. Not only does she learn how he got into playing the harmonica and how he keeps the craft alive by offering repairs to the instrument, but she also gets to hear a performance! Next, Aerial relives her student days by visiting Quitman County Middle School, where she helps the manager of the TVA Science Kids World Water Monitoring Program collect samples for a lab that she then gets to participate in during class. There, she discovers why it’s important for kids to learn about their local water sources, and to get handson experience with scientific experiments. Before she concludes her trip to Mississippi, Aerial meets up with the owner of the Shack Up Inn, a collection of sharecropper shacks that are as historically prominent as they are comfortable.
