Immigration and Mahwah's History, with Cathy Moran Hajo, Ph.D.
Looking at the settlement of people in Mahwah over its long history, you see the history of the United States in small-scale. From the earliest settlement of Native Americans, colonization by Dutch and British settlers, and waves of 19th and 20th century European travelers, diverse cultures shaped the town, its development, its churches, and its businesses. This talk looks at the different groups that make Mahwah a unique and diverse community, focusing on its founding to 1940.
Cathy Moran Hajo is a historian and scholarly editor who directs the Jane Addams Papers Project at Ramapo College of New Jersey. She is the Vice President and Archives Director of the Mahwah Museum and lived in town for over 40 years. She has a Ph.D. in History from New York University.

This long edit is a bit different than my previously released series. I took out all the music and left in just natural sounds. I love the soothing soundtrack of tires crunching on gravel.

大家好 歡迎收看 《行影步離》
在夏威夷與新西蘭中間，有這樣兩個國名相同的國家他們都叫薩摩亞。只不過西邊的是西薩摩亞，而東邊的叫美屬薩摩亞。
今天咱們先聊一聊西薩，這個國家很有意思，為了方便進口汽車的使用，2009年將靠右行駛改為靠左行駛。
在2011年底又把自己從世界上最晚日落的國家，變成了最早日出的國家。
而這些改變都源於薩摩亞人移民澳大利亞和新西蘭數量的不斷增加。
其實薩摩亞是一個僅有20萬人口的小國，而且76%的國民都住在鄉村，經濟以熱帶農業為主，很多方面都需要國際援助，澳大利亞，日本和德國是對薩援助最多的國家。
薩摩亞被稱為波利尼西亞的中心，早在3000多年前就有波利尼西亞人在此居住，但在第二次內戰後，薩摩亞被一分為二，西薩在1899年成為德國殖民地。
一戰時被新西蘭佔領並持續託管，直到1962年1月1日，西薩獨立建國，1997年正式改國名為薩摩亞。
百年來華人對薩摩亞經濟發展有著很大的貢獻，最早在19世紀末就有中國人來薩，種植椰子和香蕉，最多時曾達到數千人，後因新西蘭政府實施種族政策，華人數量開始減少，最後留下的數百人與當地人通婚並長期生活了下來。
目前在薩摩亞純血統的華人可能只有幾十人，但混血華裔卻有3萬多，要知道薩摩亞首都阿皮亞的總人口才4萬，2002年華裔公會在薩摩亞正式成立。
薩摩亞被蘇格蘭著名作家《金銀島》作者史蒂文森喻為南太平洋的天堂。很顯然薩摩亞是一片風景宜人的淨土，薩摩亞人平時的生活也非常悠閒。
麵包樹是薩摩亞的一種特殊資源，12棵麵包樹所結的果實，足夠一個人吃上一整年，用麵包樹建的房子，也可以住上50年。
在薩摩亞的鄉村中幾乎所有的民房，都有一個共同的特點那就是沒有牆，但即使如此也並沒有小偷文化的存在。
看看以巨石強森為代表的薩摩亞氏族高大威猛的男人，不難理解為什麼薩摩亞人會被稱為世界上最強壯的民族。
除了悠久的歷史文化，薩摩亞還是一個由數個島嶼組成的自然美景明信片，雖然看起來是一個簡陋的地方，但其寧靜又休閒，令人驚嘆又如陽光一樣溫暖，旅遊業絕對是薩摩亞的經濟支柱，在薩摩亞很多大小景區都屬於私人所有。
100多年前的1890年，史蒂文森就是為了尋找一處療愈之所，才來到薩摩亞買地蓋房安家，目前薩摩亞對於患有傳染病、糖尿病、心髒病，和癌症等疾病的國民都會提供免費醫療。
相比薩摩亞的淳樸，美屬薩摩亞則顯得更加狂野，關於這片美國最南端領土的故事，咱們下期繼續吧。
