Charlotte, Anne & Emily Bronte - Walking in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters

Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte lived 180 years ago. We visit Bronte Country and walk in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters, piecing together their tragic short lives as we visit places they lived or frequented.
The Brontes wrote some of the most dramatic fiction right here in West Yorkshire and many of the places still exist. On our walk, we will head to where it all started at the Bronte's birthplace in Thornton. Visit the school that Charlotte Bronte immortalised as Lowood School in Jane Eyre. See Oakwell Hall which she based Fieldhead on in Shirley. Walk the wild Haworth Moors to Top Withens where Emily Bronte found inspiration for Wuthering Heights, and a whole lot more.
All the time telling the story of how the 3 Bronte Sisters came to be the famous writers we all know today.

HAUNTED VICTORIA: Ghosts of Craigdarroch Castle

A classic haunted Victoria building, the Craigdarroch Castle was constructed in the late 19th century as a family residence for the wealthy coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and his wife Joan. Robert died in April 1889, 17 months before construction on the castle was completed. The building later served as a military hospital, college, offices, and a conservatory, before it was re-purposed into a historical museum in 1979. However, visitors to this historic building may just encounter one of the many spirits living within these walls.

Verses on the Vanguard: Russian Poetry Today

Poets and translators of Russian verse reunite for a bilingual reading as part of PEN America’s Writers in Dialogue project, which has joined some of the most daring new voices in Russian poetry with American translators to introduce their work to American audiences.

In 2020, as international travel skidded to a halt, PEN America’s Writers in Dialogue project—which opens the exhilarating world of contemporary Russian poetry to American readers by bridging American and Russian literary communities—went remote, using online connection to foster collaborations between daring emerging or under-translated poetic voices and dextrous translators. In this event, the Russian poets and American translators who were paired for this initiative reunite for a bilingual reading, for which each pair will share a poem in both languages, and join in a conversation about the pleasures, challenges, and intimacies of translation. American audiences will have an opportunity to experience the boldness and stylistic and thematic range of the work originating from a vital poetry scene. Featuring Ainsley Morse, Maria Galina, Catherine Ciepiela, Alexandra Tsibulya, Anna Halberstadt, Oksana Vasyakina, Elina Alter, Ivan Sokolov, Kevin Platt, Ekaterina Simonova, Valeriya Yermishova, and Nikita Sungatov, with Polina Sadovskaya and Polina Barskova moderating.

Presented in collaboration with Deep Vellum and the Harriman Institute at Columbia University.

The 2021 PEN World Voices Festival convenes fiction and nonfiction writers, poets, translators, thinkers, and activists to honor the art of the possible and the power of storytelling to push boundaries, challenge inherited narratives, and give voice to hope, courage, and survival. In a year when division and bloodshed have been fueled by hatreds based on race, ethnicity, and religion, the Festival celebrates resilience and courage, and summons the powers of the radical imagination and literature as gateways to reckoning and reconciliation.

Grief and PTSD - Love Letters to Pam Podcast

#grief #loss #ptsd
People who survive a trauma that resulted in the loss of a close friend or loved one can lead to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder or more commonly known as PTSD. In this episode I share with you some thoughts on how I may have been dealing with my case of PTSD. I'll also share a story with you about how a former NFL player described how loss can be compared to a football injury. It may sound strange but after you hear the story you will certainly see the connection.

Sad record of pollution, Nečujam, Šolta island, Croatia

(Note: This isn't a commentary on pollution. What Nečujam showed me is that pollution isn't just a corporate problem. Since Nečujam, however, I've begun to notice the pollution more in Croatia. Maybe it's always been there, but not at the levels I saw in Nečujam. As I mentioned in my original text below, Nečujam isn't a poor community; so pollution can't be ignored as a problem of the poor.)

As I mentioned on my video, this kind of pollution is unusual for Croatia. I've been to different places along the Adriatic Sea and have not seen anything approaching the level of pollution I observed in Nečujam.

As you'll discover in the next video I post, the issue of pollution isn't unique to Nečujam; but it's significantly worse on Nečujam than Gornje Krušice. I reached Nečujam through a shortcut and came down on the bike path which leads to the bay (all the bays around Šolta island are part of the Adriatic Sea, but this one doesn't have a name on the tourist map) at the far left of Nečujam (as I said, there's a kind of a path that leads in).

The first part of my journey took me along the sea, past house no. 75 until I found the last major pollution site, with no visible kind of a path leading away from it. At first, I thought it was just a small section of pollution in the water; I took photos, then walked along the path to the left where you don't see any pollution and the views are nice (in fact, there's a spot when looking at the houses of Nečujam on the opposite bank that mirror those on the tourist map - I thought that was cool).

Then I went the other way toward the main part of Nečujam, on the edge of the water. (In fact, I figured out my thinking toward the end of the video: Earlier, the water was closer to the rocks, which is why I was almost stepping on it to cross; it was during this time that I, at one point, grabbed a tree to help me keep my balance around a thinner section of rocks.) That's when I noticed more of the pollution along the water, having missed the pollution on double-sided dirt path that leads to the kind of path (not really a path, but it will get you where you need to go); it was at this point I felt an ethical obligation to film.

My initial thoughts were that the pollution could be explained by the fact that the bay was further removed from the main part of town, with fewer homes, etc. This held up until I got to the beach in the center; it was less pollution, but...Anyway, I kept going until, chancing on another kind of path, I found the last major section of pollution which was worse than the beach but not as bad as the pollution by the bay.

If you visit Nečujam, you'll see that the people who have homes there are affluent; so the pollution isn't the product of a poor community the way it is in Bulgaria - and the pollution in Nečujam is pale in comparison (however, I know that there are environmental efforts underway in Bulgaria; I remember reading something about a conference before I left). However, I also don't know that this is a problem you see in the summer which is when the tourists, etc. want to be near the sea, etc.

So I don't know if the problem is someone didn't clean up after the summer season, much less if cleanups are done in advance of the summer season. I just know that when I went there, it was January, in the off-season and during winter; that means nothing was open, and there were hardly any people around.

However, I honestly don't know what to say about the pollution in Nečujam, other than, again, to repeat that it takes away from the aesthetic appeal and raises concerns about water issues, etc. Then again, boats, etc. create a lot more pollution; but the sociological literature I read years ago also said that the existence of pollution suggests a disinterest in the community, where violence is more likely, etc.

I don't, however, think that the sociological view explains Nečujam. Then, is it simply that people don't care? To me, the whole thing is just bizarre and troublesome.

I mean - seriously - that Croatia, in general, is fairly clean. What trash on the streets, etc. I have seen can be explained by open dumpsters and wind. The pollution in Nečujam is just on a whole other level; but I'm in another country. I have no idea what cleanup efforts there might be, if the environment is an issue of concern, etc.

However, there are several parts in Nečujam that look really nice. It's just those three sections where the pollution is concentrated on that diminish the appeal of Nečujam for me; except for the church and some of the design features of the houses, I'm not sure I could recommend that anyone else visit there.

As I mentioned, I only saw pollution like this in Nečujam and, to a lesser extent, Gornje Krušice. The rest of what I saw of Šolta island was nice. In fact, if you've never seen a landfill, you have an opportunity traveling on the main road around Nečujam.

:)
