Inside Kenya’s Women-Only Village (The Land Of No Men)
Umoja is a village in Kenya. The village, founded in 1990, is an all-female matriarch village located near the town of Archers Post in Samburu County, 380 km from the capital, Nairobi. It was founded by Rebecca Lolosoli, a Samburu woman, as a sanctuary for homeless survivors of violence against women, and young girls running from forced marriages or female genital mutilation. The women of the Samburu people do not agree with violence and the traditional subordinate position of women.

The Village Without Men!
Umoja Village is a unique women-only village located in Kenya. It was founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli, a Samburu woman, as a refuge for women who had experienced gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, forced marriages, and female genital mutilation (FGM). The village is situated in the grasslands of Uaso Nyiro, approximately 380 kilometers north of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
Umoja Village was established as a safe space for women to live independently and support themselves and their children. The community is primarily composed of Samburu women and their children, but it has also welcomed women from other tribes who sought refuge and empowerment. In Umoja, women govern themselves and make all the decisions regarding the village's operations.
The village aims to promote gender equality, women's empowerment, and the elimination of harmful practices such as FGM and child marriages. Women in Umoja engage in various income-generating activities, including traditional beadwork, which has gained international recognition and become a source of economic sustenance for the village.
Umoja Village has faced its share of challenges and resistance from the conservative Samburu community. However, it has also received support from local and international organizations that recognize the importance of women's rights and empowerment. Over the years, Umoja has become a symbol of resilience and a model for other communities working towards gender equality and the elimination of gender-based violence in Kenya and beyond.

When I first heard about Mama Uganda, the world's most fertile woman who has given birth to 44 kids - I immediately booked a flight to visit her and find out how she's able to raise them in a small Ugandan village.
After spending 24 hours plugged into her life, with all of her kids inside -- I have to admit that her story is a sad one. Forced into marriage at 12 years old, she had her first set of quintuplets at 13, and then gave birth on 16 more occasions (to quintuplets, triplets, and twins) -- before her 40th birthday. Even crazier, she raises ALL of them as a single mother (her ex-husband abused and abandoned her.)
But Mama Uganda is a warrior, a superhuman and a true African legend who is one of the most inspiring people I've ever met.

Unity is a women only #matriarch led village in Samburu, #kenya . When this video was filmed, Unity was comprised of 21 women and their families. Umoja : the women-only village in Kenya
I got the chance to visit Umoja village in Samburu county (Kenya)
It began as a refuge for survivors of sexual violence. Now it's a place where women are supporting each other and empowering themselves.
I met Sitiyap (our guide) and spent the afternoon chatting with her. Having someone who's my age as a guide made the experience even more interesting. I could relate to her story.
She wanted me to share their story.
I hope you will enjoy and mostly add this on your itinerary if you happen to go to Kenya.
How to get there if you're coming from Nairobi? Nairobi ➡️ Meru ➡️ Isiolo ➡️ Archer's Post (the village will be 10 minutes by walk from there).
I went there by matatus (public transportation) but I recommend you rent a car or hire a private transfer.

The Land of No Men: Inside Kenya's Women-Only Village'Where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the desert, the people of Samburu have maintained a strict patriarchy for over 500 years in northern Kenya. That is, until 25 years ago, when Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for the region's women. Umoja, which means unity in Swahili, is quite literally a no man's land, and the matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuses, like genital mutilation and forced marriages, at the hands of men.
Throughout the years, it has also empowered other women in the districts surrounding Samburu to start their own men-excluding villages. Broadly visited Umoja and the villages it inspired to meet with the women who were fed up with living in a violent patriarchy.
