In this video, we’re visiting Moulay Idriss, a small town spread over two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun in Morocco. The town is famous for being the site of the tomb of Idris the first, the first major islamic ruler of Morocco. Due to its holy status, non-muslims were not able to visit the town until 1912 and weren’t able to stay overnight until as recently as 2005.
On our walking tour, we visit a community oven, see carpenters at work, visit the main market and explore the narrow residential alleyways.

Moulay Driss Zerhoun est la première cité musulmane en Afrique du Nord dont le nom a été emprunté à son fondateur Moulay Driss. Elle est perchée à 550 mètres d’altitude, sous le Djebel Zerhoun et s'étend sur deux collines, entourée de plaines vertes où abondent des oliviers. Jusqu’en 1917, la ville a été interdite aux non musulmans, aujourd’hui, elle conserve son caractère de ville sainte.
La ville s'accroche à une colline, c'est un dédale d'escaliers ! Certaines places, appelées terrasses, offrent une vue plongeante sur la cité, le mausolée et l’enchevêtrement des ruelles et des maisonnettes qui l’entourent.
La ville est située au centre du massif du Zerhoun, à 4 km de l'ancienne cité romaine de Volubiilis, à 30 km au nord de Meknès et à une soixantaine de km à l'ouest de Fès

زرهون مدينة جبلية مغربية، تقع قرب مدينة مكناس وتسمى أيضا مدينة مولاي إدريس زرهون، نسبة إلى مؤسس الدولة الإدريسية وتمثل هذه المدينة كعاصمة لأول دولة إسلامية في المغرب وإفريقيا مستقلة عن المشرق منذ القرن السادس الميلادي، ورغم صغر حجمها، إلا أنها كبيرة برمزيتها وتاريخها بالنسبة للحضارة المغربية والمغرب العربي وشمال إفريقيا.
La ville est située au centre du massif du Zerhoun, à 4 km de l'ancienne cité romaine de Volubiilis, à 30 km au nord de Meknès et à une soixantaine de km à l'ouest de Fès.
Elle s'est développée autour du tombeau d'Idrîs Ier, arrière-petit-fils de Hassan ben Ali, fondateur de la dynastie des Idrissides, mort empoisonné sur les ordres de Hâroun ar-Rachîd.
Il est toujours l'objet d'un pèlerinage fréquenté et d'un moussem (fête votive annuelle) particulièrement important.
Les deux quartiers principaux, Khiber et Tazga, occupent deux collines qui se font face. Dans le vallon qui les sépare se trouve le sanctuaire (qubba) de Moulay Idrîs.

It was a challenging uphill walk in Volubilis town in Meknes to reach the overlooking houses on top of the mountain around the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss tomb.
Moulay Idriss, Moulay Driss Zerhoun or simply Zerhoun is a town in the Fès-Meknès region of northern Morocco, spread over two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun. It is famous for being the site of the tomb of Idris I, the first major Islamic ruler of Morocco, after whom the town is named. It is located near Meknes and overlooks the ruins of Volubilis a few kilometers away.
Moulay Idris was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad who fled from Abbasid-controlled territory after the Battle of Fakh because he had supported the defeated pro-Shi'a rebels. He established himself at Oualili (Volubilis), a formerly Roman town which by then was mostly inhabited by Berbers and a small population of Judeo-Christian heritage. He used his prestige as a descendant of the Prophet to forge an alliance with local Berber tribes (in particular the Awraba) in 789 and quickly became the most important religious and political leader in the region. As the old site of Roman Volubilis was located on an open plain and considered vulnerable, the settlement moved up a few kilometers towards the mountains, presumably around the site of the current town of Moulay Idriss, leaving the old Roman ruins abandoned.

Meknes, Volubilis & Moulay Idriss
Meknes is a city in northern Morocco, located 130 kilometres from the capital Rabat and 60 kilometres from Fes. It is served by the A2 expressway between those two cities. Meknes was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672 -- 1727), before it was relocated to Rabat. The population is 536,322 (2004 census). It is the capital of the Meknès-Tafilalet region.
The land upon which the city is founded and much of its surrounding territory came under the domination of the Roman empire in 117 A.D. (see History of Morocco). The original community from which Meknes can be traced was an 8th century Kasbah, or fortress. A Berber tribe called the Miknasa settled there in the 10th century, and a town consequently grew around the fortress. Meknes saw its golden age as the imperial capital of Moulay Ismail following his accession to the Sultanate of Morocco (wikipedia)
Volubilis is an archaeological site in Morocco situated near Meknes between Fez and Rabat. The nearest town is Moulay Idriss. Volubilis features the best preserved excavations in this part of northern Africa dating from the Roman Empire. In 1997 the site was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
In antiquity, Volubilis was an important Roman town situated on the westernmost border of Roman conquests. It was built about 40 C.E., probably on the site of a previous Carthaginian settlement from the 3rd century B.C.E. Volubilis takes its name from the ancient Latin name for the Oleander flower, which is common in the area.
Volubilis was the administrative center of the province in Roman Africa called Mauretania Tingitana. The fertile lands of the province produced many goods such as grain and olive oil, which were exported to Rome, contributing to the province's wealth and prosperity.
The Romans evacuated most of Morocco at the end of the 3rd century but, unlike some other Roman cities, Volubilis was not abandoned. However, it appears to have been destroyed by an earthquake in the late fourth century A.D. It was reoccupied in the sixth century, when a small group of tombstones written in Latin shows the existence of a Christian community that still dated its foundation by the year of the Roman province. Coins show that it was occupied under the Abbasids: a number of these simply bear the name of Walila. The texts referring to the arrival of Idris I in 788 show that the town was at that point in the control of the Awraba tribe, who welcomed the descendent of Ali with open arms, and declared him imam shortly thereafter. Within three years he had consolidated his hold on much of the area, founded the first settlement at Fez , and started minting coins. He died in 791, leaving a pregnant Awraba wife, Kenza, and his faithful slave, Rashid, who acted as regent until the majority of Idris II. At this point the court departed for Fez, leaving the Awraba in control of the town.
The ruins of the town were damaged by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, while in the 18th century part of the marble was taken for constructions in nearby Meknes.
In 1915, archeological excavation was begun there by the French. Extensive remains of the Roman town have been uncovered. From 2000 excavations carried out by University College, London and the Moroccan Institut National des Sciences de l'Archéologie et du Patrimoine under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress, Gaetano Palumbo and Hassan Limane revealed what should probably be interpreted as the headquarters of Idris I just below the walls of the Roman town to the west.
