The Karakoram Highway - from China to Pakistan

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters.

The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades.

In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time.

The Karakoram Highway KKH, also known as N-35 or National Highway 35  or the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway) is a 1,300 km (810 mi) national highway which extends from Hasan Abdal in the Punjab province of Pakistan to the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China and becomes China National Highway 314. The highway connects the Pakistani provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa plus Gilgit-Baltistan with China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The highway is a popular tourist attraction and is one of the highest paved roads in the world, passing through the Karakoram mountain range, at 36°51′00″N 75°25′40″E at maximum elevation of 4,714 m (15,466 ft) near Khunjerab Pass.Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions under which it was constructed, it is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The highway is also a part of the Asian Highway AH4.

Grip on Trip is all about revealing the real picture of Pakistani terrain from the depths of Arabian Sea to its highest vintage points like Karakoram Mountain Range, from lush green valleys of Kashmir to the vast wilderness of Thar, from Golden Sand Beaches of Gawadar to Hooper glacier of Hunza, from Mud Volcanoes of Lasbela to Suspension Bridges of Northern areas, from the most challenging Fairy Meadows Track to world's second highest plateau Deosai, from the relics of Indus Civilization to the mega metropolitan cities. Full Drive from Khunjerab to Tashkurgan (Chinese side of Karakoram Highway)

قاراقورۇم تاشيولى يۇرۇش خاتىرىسى: قونجىراپ - تاشقۇرغان

Part 1 of my drive from Khunjerab (on the Pakistani Kashmir border) to Kashgar on the Karakoram Highway (China National Highway G314), via Tashkurgan. Go to 9:20 to skip my drive up to Khunjerab, before heading down.

Karakoram Highway is the only road connecting China and Pakistan, and is known in Pakistan as National Highway 35. It reaches its highest point at the China-Pakistan border pass, Khunjerab Pass (4693 m altitude, 15397 ft). The road is dotted with exotic landmarks, such as Attabad Lake, K2, and Mt. Muztagh Ata, and became the ultimate destination to cyclists, bikers and mountaineers.

Because of the Coronavirus, all visitors heading from the Chinese side in 2021 are stopped 9 km from the actual China-Pakistan border and Khunjerab Pass itself. So my starting point is actually the Khunjerab Border Police Station 9 km from the border.

As of 2019, in order to visit any part of Tashkurgan County, foreigners must either travel with government-approved tour groups (these can be found in Kashgar). Foreigners *could* also pass through Tashkurgan in transit to Pakistan (only between May and December), provided they hold a valid passport, Pakistani visa, and not stray away from the Karakoram Highway (G314). However, few hotels on this route are allowed to serve foreigners. Chinese citizens can apply for a border permit and travel on their own to Tashkurgan, but these permits are not valid for all villages; permits for these villages must be applied for locally. As such, it is much easier for foreigners to visit the Karakoram Highway on the Pakistani side.

Keep in mind that the above rules were only valid up to 2019, and rules are updated on a daily basis in 2021. Vast swathes of Tashkurgan County are sealed off to nonlocal visitors in 2021, due to the pandemic, military exercises, government paranoia and other reasons.

The Karakoram Highway stretches from the ancient Silk Road oasis of Kashgar in China's Xinjiang region all the way to Abbottabad in Pakistan. The entire road is about 1300 kilometers and passes by some of the most beautiful scenery that this planet has to offer.

On the Chinese side of the Karakoram Highway, there are a number of great sights to see.

A couple hours outside of Kashgar, the first stop you'll run into is the White Sands Lake (白沙湖), an amazing contrast of what looks like desert meeting a gorgeous lake.

Further south, the amazing Karakul Lake (卡拉库里湖) sits at the base of the Muztaghata mountain, part of the Pamir mountain range. It was here that we stayed in a Kyrgyz yurt along the shore.

Rising in elevation, we cross the Subash pass (苏巴什) and ride through the Taheman Grasslands (塔合曼) before finally arriving at Tashkorgan (塔什库尔干). It's a journey that used to take 10-12 hours by bus but now takes only 5-6 hours thanks to new and improved highways.

If you're considering traveling along the Karakoram Highway, I hope that this video will push you to giving it a try. You won't regret it!

Karakoram Highway: The Border of China and Pakistan

The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved road on earth. This mountainous stretch of highway runs between western China and Pakistan, and it’s one of the very few routes that crosses through the Himalayas.

Our journey begins in Kashgar, a city in the far west of China’s XinJiang Province. From here, we’ll take a van as far as we can, all the way to the border of China and Pakistan. The natural scenery here is stunningly beautiful.

Our first stop is at White Sand Lake. Dry desert hills and a massive body of water contrast with each other, making this lake a stunning sight to behold. Here, a few Kyrgyz families live in small houses along the lake and peddle precious stones to the occasional visitor.

Only 30 kilometers further and we’ve reached Karakul Lake. Crystal clear water, snow-capped mountains and roaming camels are a part of everyday life here. Sitting at 12,000 feet above sea level, the scenery here is literally breathtaking. Even while resting, I find myself gasping for air.

This is the 11th Episode of my Solo Motorcycle Journey in Pakistan and in this episode, I started in Gulmit and went to Ondra Fort before continuing riding on the stunning Karakoram Highway towards Khunjerab Pass which is the highest paved border crossing in the world. This the probably the most scenic part of Karakoram Highway especially the breathtaking views of Passu Cones along the way. I stayed overnight in Sost which is the last village before the China border.

Northern areas of Pakistan are considered among the most beautiful due to stunning mountain vistas and natural beauty.

Driving along China Pakistan Borderline Highway G219 in Karakoram Range, Xinjiang

Driving in Karakoram Range China side in Xinjiang along the borderline between China and Pakistan, Tibet to Xinjiang direction on the China National highway G219 from Kudi to Kekeya through Kudi Mountain Pass.
⏺ ROUTE OF THIS DRIVING:
⏺ Karakoram Range, The second highest mountain range in the world
In the Karakoram Mountains, Karakoram comes from the Turkic word meaning black rock mountain. The Karakoram Mountains are the most developed mountain glaciers in the world and one of the famous mountains in Asia.
It extends from the easternmost part of Afghanistan to the southeast for about 480 kilometers. The width is approximately 240 kilometers and the length is 800 kilometers. The average altitude is more than 5,500 meters. It is the place with the largest concentration of the longest glaciers outside high mountains and high latitudes in the world. The borders of Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India all radiate within this mountain range, giving this region enormous geopolitical significance. Karakoram originates from the transliteration of the word black river or black water in Xia language, which appeared in English works in the early 19th century.
⏺ CHINA NATIONAL HIGHWAY G219
Xinjiang-Tibet Highway, traditionally refers to National Highway 219 (while the central section of National Highway 216 is called the second line of Xinjiang-Tibet Highway), it starts from the zero-kilometer stele in Yecheng County, Kashgar, Xinjiang in the north, and ends in Lazi County, Shigatse, Tibet in the south. The 2,140-kilometer stele in Wuxiang is where the China-Nepal Highway section of National Highway 318 intersects, also known as Yela Highway. You can go to Lhasa instead of going from Urumqi to Lhasa, which is an important route to Tibet.

The Karakoram Highway from China to Pakistan

karakoram highway | The road that links China and Pakistan

The Karakoram Highway from China to Pakistan

17. CHINA - Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan. Karakoram Highway | Round the World on a Fireblade

18-23 August 2019. Part 17 - China crossing from Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan through Xinjiang & Karakoram Highway: from Sary-Tash, Irkeshtam pass, Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Khunjerab pass - the highest border crossing in the world at 4,693m - crossing into Pakistan, to Sost and Passu.

To cross China it was mandatory to book an organised crossing with a guide. I was lucky that I ended up in a big group of 13 bikers - it brought the cost down a little.

When leaving Osh (Kyrgyzstan) I tagged along with Kim and Mark who were in the same group as me, and we headed to Sary-Tash. Mark had an accident on the way with a cow. We got to Sary-Tash and found a guest house.

The next morning we headed through Irkeshtam pass to the border with China. First exit border from Kyrgyzstan, quick and easy. 1km later entry border to China - barbed wired gate which was closed with a huge chain and padlock. We got there on time, but that's when their 3 hours lunch break started. 3 hours later we got through the gate and joined the rest of our group - they were also waiting 3 hours in a building on the other side. We had to get our luggage and bikes x-rayed and finally we were on the way.

Some 100km later there was another border. Another passport check, luggage x-rayed, we had to get our bikes disinfected. It was getting dark so we had to leave our bikes there overnight, and there was bus waiting for us to take up to Kashgar, first big city 70km away. We got there after 1am and the next morning back to the border again to finish the procedures and get out bikes. We then rode to Kashgar where we stayed for another night. Most of our group went our for some beers and ended up in some random Chinese club.

The next day day off the bikes in Kashgar, so we went for a walk around the city.

On the fourth day we rode from Kashgar to Tashkurgan some 260km. At first roads were staright and boring, no views, was stuck behind a guide (who was in car) doing 30-40mph. But later nice and twisty roads started, perfect tarmac, amazing views. Had A LOT of fun. Later there were some sections with gravel, like roadworks and I just tried to go faster on gravel (which my bike isn't really suited for), so that was fun too.

The next day we rode 100km from Tashkurgan to the border with Pakistan, continuing down on Karakoram Highway - the views were absolutely amazing. When we got to Pakistani border, it looked like there were some riots - turns out it was just one big party going on. I then continued with Mark and stopped in Passu for few nights.
