Inco Limited was a Canadian mining company and the world’s leading producer of nickel for much of the 20th century. In October 2006, Inco was purchased by the Brazilian mining company Vale. Inco grew out of the nickel mines in Sudbury, Ontario, which remains one of Vale’s largest mining projects worldwide.
The company is now a fully owned subsidiary called Vale Canada Limited; it is based in Toronto and is responsible for Vale’s base metal mining operations worldwide.

Nickel Plate Road Steam Locomotive in CVNP
Nickel Plate Road no. 765 is a 2-8-4 Berkshire type steam locomotive built for the Nickel Plate Road in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. Classified as a S-2 class Berkshire, the locomotive operated fast, heavy freight and passenger trains until retirement in 1958. It's also similar to Pere Marquette 1225.

Restored September 1, 1979

This is part 5/ 5 of my driving from Kirkenes in Norway to Murmansk in Russia going through Nikel (Nickel) just after the border between Norway and Russia. I drove along the road E105. For the first time in almost twenty years, steam graced the rails of the Lehigh Valley on August 22nd and 22rd. As a part of Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam Program, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 hauled The Lehigh Gorge Special from Allentown, PA to Pittston, PA through the famous Lehigh Gorge and over the former Central Railroad of New Jersey and Lehigh Valley Railroads. We'll follow her from her departure point in Allentown and up the Lehigh Line to Jim Thorpe. Then, after exiting the Lehigh Gorge, she'll cross over onto the tracks of the Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad for the rest of the northward journey to Pittston. After arriving in Pittston, the train will wye and head south for a brief layover in Jim Thorpe (and a meeting with and old friend) before returning to Allentown! We have compiled our footage from both days in order of location (so if you see the train looking different in a few shots, thats why). Please enjoy, and a big thank you goes out to Norfolk Southern, the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, and the Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad for all their hard work and effort to put on such an incredible event!

The Oktyabrsky mine, located in the Norilsk industrial region, develops rich cuprous and disseminated copper-nickel ores in the western flank of the Oktyabrsky deposit, which is one of the two main deposits of sulfide copper-nickel ores of the Talnakh ore cluster.
The mine was commissioned in nine stages. The first stage was put into operation on March 31, 1974, the last - on December 31, 1985. Since 1987, the mine has been operating at design volumes of ore extraction. From 1987 to 2011, more than 150 million tons of ore were mined here. On average, 15 thousand tons of ore is mined here daily, which includes copper, nickel and platinoids.
In 2011, a new ore transfer complex and a local underground crushing complex were commissioned at the mine. In 2013, the construction of a new ore transfer was completed.
The Oktyabrsky mine, together with another mine of the Oktyabrsky deposit, the Taimyrsky mine, is the largest non-ferrous metal mining enterprise in Russia.

For the first time in over 30 years, steam has returned to the Pittsburgh Line! As a part of NS' 21st Century Steam Program, the Nickel Plate #765 was called to lead an employee excursion train which traveled to Harrisburg in August 2012. We followed the #765 over its journey across central Pennsylvania on the famed Pittsburgh Line. We cover this three part journey with the eastbound ferry move from Conway to Enola, excursions in Harrisburg, then the westbound ferry move back to Conway. We see the #765 race across the former PRR Middle Division, conquer the Alleghenies, and round the Horseshoe Curve! You will see marquee, historic PRR locations such as the Rockville Bridge, Harris Tower, Altoona, Lewistown, Huntingdon, Latrobe, and many more! We are Natalie (Swiss) and Ryan (Indonesian), a couple that is traveling Indonesia with our motorcycles Kawasaki KLX 150 (Greeny) and KLX 250 (Mandara).

In this episode, we continued our travel from Palopo to Sorowako, The Nickel town.
We were welcomed by the Blanksack, Sorowako Max Owners and their family and friends. The Bikers of Sorowako showed us around and we were impressed.
On our road trip in Indonesia, passing one town after another for more than 5 months we could say that Sorowako is the cleanest town and comparable with towns in Switzerland! You could even drink the water from the lake, which was surprising as there is a massive and oldest nickel mining industry operating there. We decided to extend our stay and went for 2 nights camping by the lake and our new friends from Sorowako spoiled us every day with visiting us, bringing food, new biker's shirts and Natalie even got a handmade beanie from Darti. Wow!!!

For the platform of my expedition vehicle, I purchased a 2008 Lexus GX 470 from Frontier Motors in Middletown, Ohio:
I chose the GX 470 because it is a lot like me- middle aged, flawed, yet capable. In fact, the GX 470, branded the Land Cruiser Prado outside of North America is a veritable beast. Built on the same rugged platform and the same drivetrain as the Toyota 4Runner, it has most of the off-road features as the 4runner, but in a luxurious package. I built out LEXI in 55 days and still have more upgrades to complete on the road.

This was taken on Open Cockpit Day at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, California. As seen through my 8 year old's eyes, this is some 3 hours worth of 7500 shots (GoPro set to snap every 1 second) compressed down to the length of a song. Song is NIckle and Dime by Journey (in their rock fusion days).

As I move away from the densely populated southern band of Michigan northward, I discover my first off-road experience on a densely forested seasonal road. Although short, it gives me an idea of off-road and overland adventures to come and as luck would have it spits me out in view of Little Sable Point Lighthouse. Built in 1874, it is one of dozens that dot the circumference of Lake Michigan. Deep in Manistee National Forest near Nordhouse Dunes I find a great camping spot and deploy my iKamper Skycamp 2.0 for the first time. This is Pure Michigan
My 9.5 mile Nordhouse Dunes hike is the highlight of this leg of the journey. One of the nation's only complete lakeside dune ecosystems, Nordhouse Dunes is simply sublime.
