The Journey Along The Silk Road

Overland Silk Road: 2 years 70000 Km solo road trip in our van from Europe to Japan and back

A road trip that proved much more challenging than we expected.
This short movie will give you a taste of what we have been through.

Our goal was to visit as many remote places as possible and spend time with locals as much as we could to learn about what they have been through in the past and the way they live nowadays. It’s been an incredibly enriching experience.

We ended up driving and living around the following nations:
Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia And Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Kurdistan, Abkhazia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh), Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Korea, Japan, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Buryatia Republic, Mongolia, Altai Republic, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Kalmykia, Chechen Republic, Dagestan, Nakhchivan Republic, Romania, Ukraine, Transnistria, Moldova, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, France.

Main challenges have been: Cancelled visas, some countries with date-specific visas forcing us to be at a border on a specific day and therefore having to kind of plan our whole trip backwards, rough off-road tracks in remote areas, harsh climate ranging from +47c in Iran to -27c in Siberia. Seasons were also an important factor, even though it is not possible to be in every spot at the best time of the year, seasons can definitively enlighten or ruin your trip!

Journey along the Silk Route with Audley Travel

Audley specialists Nick and Adam recorded this footage on their journey along the Silk Route. Crossing through deserts, mountains and alpine lakes and spanning some of the most diverse landscapes in the world, the Silk Route truly is the trip of a lifetime. They spent 10 days travelling from Beijing through to Kashgar in Western China, following the route of ancient traders, before crossing into Kyrgyzstan over the stunning Torugart Pass at 4,000 metres altitude. After driving around the coast of Issyk-Kul, the second largest salt lake in the world, they flew into Uzbekistan, home to some of the world’s most impressive Muslim architecture. Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand boast impressive mosques, minarets, madrassahs and mausoleums and they explored the bustling trading domes filled with silk, spices and ceramics.

Journey Along the Silk Road: The Tapestry of Trade, Culture, and Connection

In 1986, Liu Shiming was inspired by the Silk Road, a trade route that connected Eastern and Western cultures, to craft this sculpture. The piece showcases the simplicity and rusticity characteristic of Liu Shiming's style. The clay surface is hand-carved with patterns, echoing the historical imprints formed by nature over thousands of years. This sculpture embodies the remarkable history of the Silk Road, representing not merely a trade route but also a bridge between civilizations. Now, the artwork found its permanent home at the American University in Cairo, a city with significant historical and cultural ties to the Silk Road, standing prominently on the public lawn of the campus library.
