Crete: Why is Food in Crete Island of Greece so Tasty and Healthy? #mediterraneanfood

Food in Crete Island (Greece) is so fresh and varied that you'll want to try many traditional dishes before you leave this beautiful island. Its ancient roots are not forgotten here and food is still prepared as their ancestors did.

The land in Crete is extremely fertile and the locals prefer growing their own vegetables, animals and herbs. They use crop rotation and enrich the soil organically. Also, they refrain from feeding concentrated foods to their animals.

They love consuming everything fresh and rarely buy imported food. There are still many taverns, especially in the villages, passed from generation to generation, where tourists can try the original cooking style in Crete.

I was overwhelmed by the taste of this island's dishes, by the variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes and by the warmth of the people. I admire their respect for nature and old traditions!

It was Crete that inspired the researches to find out more about their diet, as Cretans are healthier and live longer lives. They discovered that the freshness of the products they consume, together with the varied types of foods they prepare, make Cretan food so healthy and beneficial.

These studies opened the way for the Mediterranean diet, which includes now dishes from all Mediterranean countries.

At the end of the video, there are some tips that I have for your first visit to Crete ;)

Enjoy your visit to this beautiful island! There are sooooo many amazing dishes to try and beautiful places to visit in Crete.

Greek Islands FOOD TOUR in Crete - Seafood and MOUTHWATERING Gyros in Chania!

Chania, Crete is an amazing old town, that’s rich with culture, and has some seriously delicious Greek island food to discover. In this video, you’ll find some of the must-eat restaurants and street food stalls to try, if you love to eat, when you’re in Chania, Crete!

Here are all the places featured in this Cretan food tour of Chania:

Μπουγάτσα Χανίων - For breakfast there’s no better place in Chania to get started than this local spot that specializes in bougatsa, and amazing cheese filled pastry. You can eat it with or without sugar, both was delicious, but I liked it without sugar.
Total price - 5.40 EUR for 2

Oasis - For street food, this is about as good as Greek food gets. Oasis is a local gem that serves Cretan Greek gyro pita, a spit of pork that revolves and slow cooks. When you order, you get pita, filled with gyro meat, seasoning and tzatziki to top it off. It’s outstanding.
Gyro pita - 2 EUR each

Old Chania Market (Agora Market) - One of the many best things to do in Chania, Crete, is walk around the Old Chania Market, especially if you love to eat. I chose to eat at a restaurant called Αγαπήνης Οινομαγειρείο, that serves traditional Cretan food. It’s a market atmosphere, and the food is outstanding.
Total price - 21 EUR for everything

Attractions in Chania - Agios Nikolaos, Chania Promenade, Lighthouse - In the afternoon I did some sightseeing in Chania, which is a very charming town. I would highly recommend taking the walk out to the end of the lighthouse. The views are spectacular.

Thalassino Ageri Restaurant - For dinner in Chania, we walked over to a restaurant called Thalassino Ageri Restaurant a legendary Greek seafood restaurant, along the coast, in an area of town with abandoned buildings. The setting is superb, and they offer a variety of seafood, including fresh fish catch of the day. We ordered a bunch of seafood, and enjoyed the gorgeous environment.
Total price - 74.90 EUR

Thank you for joining me on this Greek food tour of Chania, Crete. Hope it gives you some delicious food ideas, and thank you for watching!

Mediterranean Diet Farmers Market Tour | Island of Crete

Cretan food, fresh from the farmers market in Kolymbari, Crete is what Mediterranean Diet dreams are made of. Take a Crete food tour with George Zikos, one of Mediterranean Living’s recipe developers and food bloggers.

The Mediterranean Diet is one of the healthiest diets in the world. And, the Greek island of Crete is a great place to explore this traditional, healthy diet. The unique climate of Crete allows everything to grow in abundance.

Wherever you travel in Crete, you are surrounded by olive trees. Cretans consume the most olive oil of anybody in the world. This is one of the keys to their extremely healthy way of life.

The Cretan diet consists of lots of olive oil, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and small amounts of meat and fish. Cretans also consume moderate amounts of wine and Raki, the local aperitif.

They cook everything in olive oil and they hardly use butter. Butter is used for certain dishes and special occasions like rice pilaf. Could this way of eating explain why Cretans have some of the lowest rate of heart disease in the world? This is certainly part of it.

The Island Cooking of Crete

But what is the secret of the Cretan diet?

Crete has one of the oldest and most tasteful cuisines in the world. It is the continuation of traditional flavours, aromas, ingredients and styles dating all the way back to the Minoan times.

Archaeological findings show that 4000 years ago ancient Cretans consumed more or less the same products as Cretans today.

Many large urns used for storing oil, wine, cereals, legumes and honey were found in the Minoan palaces.

Each region in Crete has its own specialties.

Cretans feed on the products of their land: plenty of fruit and vegetables, greens, and legumes.

The use of meat is relatively limited in Crete, while cheese holds a special place on the table.

Herbs and plants picked from the island’s mountains add flavour to everyday food.

As a rule, lunch or dinner is always accompanied with local wine and exceptionally tasty hand-kneaded bread.

In general, one might describe Cretan cuisine as an imaginative, creative, and particularly aromatic proposition,

based on simple seasonal ingredients, and the art that comes from the love for the land and the attachment to traditional cooking methods.

A typical feature of the Cretan table is the variety of dishes, which combine with one another to form a tasteful entity.

The ingenious Cretans have even included the vine itself in the list of raw materials used in local cuisine.
The recipe for longevity never tasted any better

In the course of its long history, Crete’s gastronomy has been greatly influenced by the many people who tried at one point or another to conquer it.

But if we examine this timeline more closely, we will find that Cretans had a way of filtering every dietary habit and adapting it to their standards, thus adding a special character to it.

Century after century, the soul, the language and the cuisine of Cretans has remained unchanged!

This continuity and the ability of the island to preserve its personal character, despite changes and adversities, formed a tradition which is now proven to be particularly valuable.

Thus, the international scientific community not only speaks about Cretan cuisine, but also about the miracle of the Cretan diet!

The Cretan cuisine is not considered rich in terms of variety of ingredients. It is a cuisine based on what the Cretan land has to offer.

Focus is placed on the art of cooking and the processing of simple ingredients, rather than on using complex and rare combinations of expensive raw materials.

The Cretan cuisine is different from other cuisines because it does not try to mix flavours, irrespective of the variety of the ingredients used for the everyday table.

Each ingredient maintains its autonomy, its identity and its flavour. They all co-exist in harmony, highlighting this fine balance that defines the Cretan cuisine and the island in general.

Crete's Mediterranean Cuisine

Touring Crete's Mediterranean Cuisine: Heraklion and Chania

My takeaways from Cretan cuisine in a few points:
1) seasonal and local ingredients are key
2) despite being an island, Crete eats more land animals (goats, lamb, rabbits, etc…) than seafood
3) the staples you’ll find at nearly every table include rusks (dried bread) with olive oil, seasonal boiled greens, cheese (especially mizithra), local herbs, pies (pastries filled with anything from cheese to greens to meat), and raki (the alcoholic beverage that definitely takes some getting used to)

Our little story

Once upon a time there were two boys who grew up in Crete. They loved to go to the high peaks of the White Mountains to meet their grandfather. It was an idyllic village with an amazing view to the mountain over it. The kids played with the old man, walking around the mountain paths, cooking together, enjoying the countryside life. He loved them and they were all his life! He taught them how to farm and harvest the grapes or the olives, the names of the plants and everything about the flora and fauna of Crete. He was a proud and brave man, tired from his life but still strong and happy. His passion was to cook and he was really good at that!!

Many years after grandpa passed away, the two children, now men, met in their olive field. The boys are 25 years old now… They never forgot those days in their childhood and their grandpa’s sweet face! That day something changed inside them. Something affected their thoughts. With one single look, they understood exactly what they had to do! They ran together to their grandpa’s home and saw the yard. It was easy. With passion and plenty of enthusiasm in 2016, the two cousins rebuilt some of the home’s damages and prepared a nice and warm place in which to do something special. It was important for them to teach and share their grandfather’s heritage and revive his secret love to cook.

Everything was made by the two boys with their own hands. The ideas of their beloved old man came back to life. Now they are ready to welcome you and live with you a unique experience! Now everyone will know what is so special about this house. Everyone will be a part of the Cretan way of life and feel the warmness of the Cretan hospitality!
