{4K} [FIRST CLASS FULL FLIGHT] Newark (EWR) - Minneapolis (MSP) — United Airlines - Airbus A319

→ Clearing first class as a low-level non-revenue traveler is very hard — but not impossible. Finding the right flight with the right amount of open first-class seats with no revenue passengers eligible for upgrades (or have already been upgraded) is the key to success here. This particular flight had more first-class seats open than regular economy seats!

When it becomes your last flight || engine caught fire #fire #crash #plane #lastflight

Note to any potentially nervous flyers — you probably don’t want to read this answer. Plenty of gallows humor is applied to an extremely rare possibility. Not a single airliner was lost to fire anywhere in the world in 2014 (the last year for which international data has been aggregated), so it just isn’t a scenario worth losing sleep over… but some of you will, and you know who you are.

This exact kind of emergency has happened in the past, and it’s rare (but by no means impossible) in the present. Bear in mind that an engine fire, while scary-sounding, is by no means a one-way ticket to disaster. In fact, an aircraft is not even considered to have suffered “substantial damage” for accident-reporting purposes if fire-related damage is limited to the engine itself. However, if for some reason such damage goes beyond the engine, perhaps affecting the wing it’s mounted on as proposed by the questioner, there’s definitely potential for trouble to follow.

Engine fires rarely cause really serious trouble if they remain confined to the engine itself. You shut off the fuel and use your fire extinguisher; the fire goes out; then, you land as soon as practical to make sure nothing else was damaged by the event. As long as nothing really dire caused the fire, it’ll get everybody’s heart rate up nicely but it usually can be quickly and safely resolved. (I don’t mean to appear over-casual about this scenario, but jet engines get hot and fuel and oil don’t always stay where they’re supposed to. In-flight fires happen. They just don’t happen very often, and they rarely lead to inevitable crashes these days.)

On the other hand, engine fires resulting from uncontained internal failures are dangerous as the dickens. This is why so much engineering effort has been devoted to minimizing their likelihood and trying to control the direction that internal parts are flung should an engine decide to take itself apart. If such a failure does occur and the aircraft suffers an engine case penetration, at least four bad things have the potential to be in play.

First, there’s always the possibility that fragments could be thrown in such a way as to damage the fuselage, causing it to lose pressure. Even if the fire is quickly and successfully extinguished, that kind of ancillary damage is serious, sometimes results in injury to occupants, and most likely will affect cabin pressurization. Even with nothing burning after the initial excitement, the crew will be looking for some convenient pavement to make use of as soon as they can.

Second, the wings hold a fair amount of the aircraft’s fuel. Punching holes in them with a fire cooking away nearby is, in technical terms, “bad.” If a damaged fuel cell allows fuel to keep feeding a fire in an engine that the crew has tried to isolate with a shutdown, the fire may continue for some time. Speed is of the essence in getting the aircraft down in such situations.

Third, while unlikely from initial damage, there’s always the possibility that flight control surfaces (flaps, slats and ailerons) and their associated control systems (hydraulics, wiring, etc.) could be damaged and wind up compromising the pilots’ ability to keep the aircraft flying in the intended direction. (The technical term for this kind of escalation of the threat is “sucky.”) Now the crew’s task is to figure out what the aircraft can and can’t do. (While it wasn’t a wing that was damaged in the accident involving United Airlines Flight 232 - Wikipedia, it was the catastrophic engine failure’s additional damage to the flight control system that wound up making the aircraft all but uncontrollable… not fire.)

Finally, while also while unlikely at the outset, the longer an uncontrolled fire burns, the greater the possibility that the affected wing’s structural strength could be adversely affected. (Us safety pros say “uh-oh” about such cases.) This is why the crew will make every effort to make sure that an engine fire goes out and stays out, and why an immediate emergency landing will be made if there’s any indication that something still might be burning.

So as you can see, it’s not an engine fire alone that’s the real concern so much as the possibility that damage might be suffered in conjunction with either whatever started the fire in the first place or an inability to put it out quickly. Regardless, pilots will not screw around with any fire, and they’ll make the fastest possible safe return to Mother Earth if they experience one that doesn’t go out in short order. There’s only so much you can do about one as long as you’re in the air.
