Niue - the world's most beautiful secret island?

It's a rockpool lovers paradise and a haven for whales who travel to the island every year to give birth.

When to go:
Between May and October.
November to April can be wet with a higher chance of stormy days.

Getting there:
Air New Zealand is the only airline that flys here and flights can get quite expensive during peak season and public holidays.

Staying there:
The only hotel on the island is called the Scenic Matavai. It often runs specials so keep an eye out!

There are also more basic options on Airbnb.

There's a small town, a few cafes and restaurants on the island along the 64km road that runs right around the island.

Car rental can be booked online and you need to get a special Niue driver's license from the police station in Alofi to legally drive here.

What do you need to apply for a license in Niue?
- A full valid driving license
- An International Driving Permit (if applicable)
- NZ$22.50 to pay with MasterCard, Visa, New Zealand debit card or cash.

Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.

While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.

The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:

1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy

Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

Niue is a small, oval island in the South Pacific Ocean, to the east of Tonga. It has an area of 260 square kilometres, and a coastline of 64 km. It claims an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles, and a territorial sea of 12 nautical miles. It is one of world's largest coral islands

Niue is the World's Largest Raised Coral Atoll

Niue is famous for being, quite simply, different from its South Pacific neighbours. Instead of being an archipelago of sandy shores or volcanos, Niue is a raised coral atoll – the world's largest!

Niue's land area is about 261.46 square kilometres (100.95 sq mi) and its population was 1,689 at the Census in 2022. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands

In 1900 Great Britain established a protectorate over Niue. The following year the island was annexed to New Zealand as part of the Cook Islands, but in 1903 it was separated and given its own resident commissioner and island council

Niue is a very small economy, has a low savings rate, and relies more on official than private financial inflows, which all indicate a lack of creditworthiness

Keeping The Niue Culture Alive! Haircutting & Earpiercing Galue!

This is the haircutting and earpiercing ceremony of Asher, Nora and Indie. Loved ones of Vanessa Marsh and BJ Rex of Alofi, Niue Island.

The Niue haircutting ceremony feast is a traditional celebration of Niue to mark the coming of age of young men. Traditionally, the ceremony involves the cutting of the young men's hair, which is seen as a symbolic representation of their transition from childhood to adulthood. Their hair hasn't been cut since birth until this event.

During the ceremony, the young men's hair is cut by designated family members and friends. For the girls, it is piercing of their ears.
After the cutting of the hair or piercing of the ears for the girls, an uncooked feast is distributed out to invited guests to celebrate the occasion.

The family prepares for this event way in advance by raising pigs and planting taro plantations. Extended family, friends and people in the community and the Island also contributes to the feast or the galue it is called in Niue.

The size of the galue you get is in direct correlation to the amount of money you donate to the family on the day of the event. Donations range anywhere from $20 to thousands of dollars. The top donation that got the first galue on this occassion is $10K.
How this normally works is like in a reciprocal way, so when people you invited to your event, when they do their function, they will invite you. So here, you return to them whatever amount of donation that they bring to yours, plus a little more usually. It would be considered very rude and wrong if you don't.

Congratulations to Vanessa and BJ Rex and their families and friends for all the hard work that goes into this event!

Learn about the island's role in the 19th-century whaling industry and the ambitious but ultimately doomed attempt by a French nobleman, Marquis de Rays, to establish a French colony in the 1870s and 1880s. This video takes you on a historical journey through New Ireland, revealing the island's beauty and its significant contributions to the cultural and historical mosaic of Papua New Guinea.
