Orange River and Vaal River Confluence by Drone

South Africa's two greatest rivers, the Vaal and the Orange converge just outside the small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here's some drone footage from a visit I paid a visit there earlier this year. Both rivers were very full, notice the difference in colour and also how much slower the Vaal's flow is than the Orange.

From here, South Africa's longest river still has another 900 km before it reaches the Atlantic ocean at Alexander Bay, on the border with Namibia.

Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience gravel road travel and off road adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.

I try to provide useful tips and background information about the unusual places that we visit, as well as endeavouring to draw attention to conservation, my intention is always to inform, educate and entertain.

Orange-Fish River Tunnel, South Africa - 1972

Produced by the National Film Board of the Republic of South Africa - 1972.

This film looks at how to build concrete lined tunnels using the Orange-Fish tunnel as an example.

The construction of the Orange-Fish Tunnel made possible the irrigation of thousands of hectares of additional land in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, diverting water from the Orange River to the Great Fish River.

With a length of 83 km, the 5,35m diameter tunnel was the longest continuous enclosed aqueduct in the southern hemisphere and the second-longest water supply tunnel in the world.

It was engineered in association with Messrs Keeve Steyn and Partners of Johannesburg for the Water Affairs Department of the South African Government.

Former Halcrow senior partner, Sir Alan Muir Wood, the father of modern tunnelling worked on many of the world's leading tunnel projects, including the Orange-Fish Tunnel.

Interesting fact:
The Orange River was named by Robert Jacob Gordon after the Dutch Royal House.

Orange River, South Africa

The Orange River (Afrikaans/Dutch: Oranjerivier), Gariep River, Groote River or Senqu River is the longest river in South Africa. It rises in the Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho, flowing westwards through South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean. The river forms part of the international borders between South Africa and Namibia and between South Africa and Lesotho, as well as several provincial borders within South Africa. Although the river does not pass through any major cities, it plays an important role in the South African economy by providing water for irrigation, as well as hydroelectric power.

Travel Guide to Lesotho

Travel Guide to Lesotho

►Read the blog:

In this episode I take you to the the Sky Kingdom of Lesotho, the highest country in Africa. This country has the highest low point on earth.

The entire country is 1000 meters above sea level. It's located about 7 hours drive south of Johannesburg and 5 hours west of Durban. For the next 72 hours I am going to be showing you what to see and do in Lesotho!

This is Semonkong the horse capital of Lesotho. It's located in the central part of the country. Right now we are going to walk around the market and buy a typical beanie follow me. Follow me lets go shopping!

After a bit of a negotiating I got three for 100 Rand. The beanies are made out of wool and it's the most traditional thing you can buy.

Welcome to Semonkong Lodge! If you're looking to explore central Lesotho this is the place to stay. They have a restaurant, 25 rooms and they are very close to Maletsunyane Fall's the highest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere. You can go pony trekking and explore Semonkong.

Next up we head to Maliba Lodge on the northern side of Lesotho. They have 6 chalets and 4 river chalets. A few different activities you can do in the area are horseback riding, village tour and a massage. They have heated floors, beds and wife.

We head out on horseback for a two hour trek in the mountains of Tsehlanyane National Park. After an incredible trek we head to the near by village of Hamadi to experience local life. At the local bar I tried some Lesotho beer which was bitter but traditional :)

S1 – Ep 312 – Andriesvale – A Captivating and Fascinating Experience on this Journey!

I was eager to explore the community of Andriesvale. Driving through the village was a captivating and fascinating experience, especially to see how the locals live in this harsh environment. We witnessed how they also depend on tourism to sustain themselves. Along the road, we encountered Bushmen displaying their handcrafted articles. We took a lovely drive through the grounds of the Molopo Lodge, which is located next to the settlement of Andriesvale. The lodge boasted a stunning driveway and beautiful chalets. The neatness and attention to detail in the accommodation were truly impressive. Additionally, the campsite offered a serene atmosphere amidst the stark beauty of the Kalahari. It was an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful getaway surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the region. Our drive through Andriesvale and Molopo Lodge left us with lasting memories of a remarkable place. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #andriesvale #molopolodge

The Great River People

In this video, we had the opportunity to experience the life and the work of the Church Family as they serve the Great River People.

We made friends in the villages, practiced our Cambodian, and we were moved by the work God is doing there and the love we were shown every single day.

Thank you for being a missionary with us through prayers and financial support.
