The Gambia and Senegal in Winter

In this film I have tried to capture some aspects of West African life that my wife and I encountered on a trip in January of 2016 to the Gambia and the Casamance province of Senegal. We spent a week in a Western-style seaside hotel in Greater Banjul to gently break us into West African life before setting off for a guesthouse in the bush near Abéné in Senegal, where life is rather more basic. In the Gambia we were fortunate enough to see in the very grounds of our hotel several specimens of birdlife that we'd never seen before, lizards different to the ones we know in France and even a troop of monkeys! The highlight was possibly an impromptu fish market we witnessed on the beach, and an unexpected experience was that of a live performance of music given to accompany a meal at the hotel restaurant. The highlight of our stay in the Casamance was indisputably setting foot on the beach just at the time the fishing boats were coming ashore and unloading their catch. To get to the Gambia we flew from Limoges to Liverpool, took a train from there to Manchester and caught a flight for Banjul.

Whether you jet over to immerse yourself in The Gambia’s world-class birdwatching, its golden sandy beaches or its exhilarating culture and vibrant atmosphere, there’s always something ready to captivate holidaymakers visiting The Gambia for the first time. While it may be mainland Africa’s smallest country, The Gambia is big on attractions and appeal, promising to be one of most exciting and diverse destinations in the continent. One of my favourite corners of the continent is West Africa. The Gambia, in particular, is a popular holiday destination with the British thanks to its golden sandy beaches, year-round hot weather, colourful culture and friendly English speaking locals. It’s in the same time zone as we are too which is handy! For many years, I worked for a tour operator to West Africa, visiting regularly for over a decade, both for work and on holiday. While many tourists rarely leave the beach or the poolside, there are no end of things to do in The Gambia, even on a tight budget. It’s a fabulous place to explore.in this video, we are looking into Top 10 Places To Visit in The Gambia!

Gambia i Senegal - Gambia and Senegal

Następnie pojechaliśmy do Touby prze Kaolack. W Toubie zwiedziliśmy Wielki Meczet, wybudowany przez bractwo Murydów. Z Touby pojechaliśmy do Saint Louis, w którym zwiedziliśmy wyspę z kolonialną zabudową, wpisaną na listę dziedzictwa UNESCO. Stamtąd pojechaliśmy do ornitologicznego Parku Narodowego Djoudj podglądać kormorany, pelikany, wężówki i inne ptactwo wodne. Potem w drodze do rezerwatu Bandia zatrzymaliśmy przy jednym z najstarszych baobabów w Senegalu i przy katedrze Św. Anny w Thies.
W prywatnym Rezerwacie Bandia odbyliśmy 2-godzinne safari, oglądając strusie, małpy, antylopy, zebry, guźce, żyrafy, bawoły, hieny i krokodyle. Stamtąd pojechaliśmy nad Różowe Jezioro, gdzie była meta Rajdu Dakar, zanim został on przeniesiony do Ameryki Południowej. Potem dotarliśmy do Zielonego Przylądka i zwiedziliśmy Dakar.

It's back into Senegal. Specially, the Casamance Region with a stay in a town and hotel, neither one of which I could pronounce. Duh...

I must say again that travel through West Africa is filled with daily obstacles and frustrations for you and your tour operator.

Gambiaurlaub???

About Gambia: Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa, and is surrounded by Senegal, except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The Gambia is situated on both sides of the lower reaches of the Gambia River, the nations namesake, which flows through the centre of The Gambia and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of 10,689 square kilometres (4,127 sq mi) with a population of 1,857,181 as of the April 2013 census. Banjul is the Gambian capital and the countrys largest metropolitan area. The largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama. The Gambia shares historical roots with many other West African nations in the slave trade, which was the key factor in the placing and keeping of a colony on the Gambia River, first by the Portuguese, during which era it was known as A Gâmbia. Later, on 25 May 1765, The Gambia was made a part of the British Empire when the government formally assumed control, establishing the Gambia Colony and Protectorate. In 1965, The Gambia gained independence under the leadership of Dawda Jawara, who ruled until Yahya Jammeh seized power in a bloodless 1994 coup. Adama Barrow became The Gambias third president in January 2017, after defeating Jammeh in the December 2016 elections. Jammeh initially accepted the results, then refused to accept them, which triggered a constitutional crisis and military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States, resulting in his exile. MY FIRST AFRICAN SAFARI | Welcome to Senegal

We decided to try Africa for a winter break, eventually settling on The Gambia. It was a great week, but the stand-out highlight was the day when we went up north to Senegal and went on safari at Fathala Wildlife Reserve!

We saw some amazing sights that day, including a rhino (my favourite). To see what else we got up to, watch my latest video!

AFRICA - FROM GAMBIA TO DAKAR (FERRY) 4K

My solo travel to Dakar. Part I : Kololi - Banjul - Barra.
The Banjul to Barra Ferry Service is one of the Gambia capital's vital economic lifelines and an essential river crossing to Dakar (Senegal) the north bank wharf town of Barra Point in the Niumi District. The journey time from the terminal and across the mouth of the Gambia River estuary is about 35 minutes and services start from Banjul at 7 am and operate until 9 in the evening. Once you have paid and entered the departure terminal there is nothing in the way of refreshments and the toilet facilities leave a lot to be desired. So do be prepared. Keep your personal belonging close to you as there are pickpockets who specifically target ferry passengers. Should you wish to make the trip by pirogue then insist on being provided with a life jacket as this is a mandatory regulation. There are 3 boats in operation which are the 'Johe', 'Barra' and 'Kanilai' with departures taking place at intervals of every 30 minutes.
