Albert Market is in Banjul on Liberation Avenue and is the capital's main urban market. It was named after Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. It is essentially an emporium that is pungent, lively and bustling with a large selection of vividly designed fabrics, carved wooden masks and fresh produce which is packed to the brim. All this is laid out within a labyrinth of alleys and hundreds of rickety stalls and purpose built shops. It is open from 8am to 7pm.

The Gambia in West Africa is a fascinating place, and with no rain between November to the middle of June virtually guaranteed, and temperatures in the 30s, it is a fantastic winter sun destination. The coast has many lovely, long sandy beaches which are never over-crowded, even in the height of the season. And you’ll find it much cheaper than many other popular winter sun locations such as the Caribbean.

Gambia Drone Flight: The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa that is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal with the exception of its western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa. The Gambia is situated on either side of the Gambia River, the nations namesake, which flows through the centre of The Gambia and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of 10,689 square kilometres with a population of 1,857,181 as of the April 2013 census. Banjul is the Gambian capital and the largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama. The Gambia shares historical roots with many other West African nations in the slave trade, which was the key factor in the placing and keeping of a colony on the Gambia River, first by the Portuguese, during which era it was known as A Gâmbia. Discovering the best of The Gambia on my short trip to the country in December - and finding there's far more than winter sun, with history, culture and everyday life to see in mainland Africa's smallest country. On my holiday with The Gambia Experience, I watched Gambian wrestling, traced the history of the slave trade, spotted crocodiles and kayaked through mangroves.

My first days in The Gambia: West Africa's Smiling Coast ????????
I visited Mainland Africa's smallest country, a West African nation known as The Smiling Coast with land borders entirely surrounded by Senegal. Popular with tourists for its beautiful beaches and friendly populace, I spent a week in the company of a friend who showed me things more interesting than the hotel resorts most visitors stick to which included Ghana Town and his family's impressive building projects such as an awe-inspiring mansion and luxurious apartment blocks!
Hope you enjoy part 1 of my Gambia adventure. Next up: I will explore the famous Serrekunda and wander through the black markets as well hunting for souvenirs to take home with me.
