Covid-19 has brought catastrophe to the aviation industry. With fleets grounded and passenger numbers in free-fall, the A380 is now too big and costly to fly.

With a price tag of $445 million, the A380 is one of the most expensive and lavish airplanes ever built. It hasn't been the game changer Airbus had hoped. Last month we saw the last A380 assembled roll off the assembly line in Toulouse. Production will end at just 251 A380s produced.

I invited Airline Executives, A380 pilots, engineers and consultants to speak about their opinion on the future of the A380.

A380 production was already in sharp decline before covid. Smaller next-generation composite wide-bodies, like the Boeing 787 and the A350, offer airlines more flexibility and less risk. In just a few short months, the fortune of the A380 has changed drastically, now the A380 has become a plane that airlines don’t want to talk about it. With all the uncertainty, most airlines don’t even know if they will use the A380 in the future.

My prediction is that more than half of the A380s will not return to service. Airlines are not short of planes at the moment, they will only be using their smaller, and more efficient planes, to ride out the storm. The coronavirus will write off most A380s from the airlines balance sheets.

The A380 will always be remembered as a great whisper quiet giant, offering incredible comfort for all passengers but proving that it’s profit that really makes an airliner fly. The unforgiving coronavirus has delivered the final blow to the A380.

The Final Airbus A380 - The Last Delivery Flight

16 Dec 2021 was a historical and sad day for A380 fans, Airbus has just delivered the last A380 MSN272 to customer Emirates Airline. In total, 251 A380s have been built.

The new aircraft, registered as A6-EVS, is Emirate's 123rd Airbus A380 superjumbo jet. It is also the final A380 aircraft to join the Emirates’ fleet.

I visited the brand new A380 in Dubai and interviewed Captain Dwayne Walker who flew it out of the Airbus factory in Hamburg. He spoke about the go-around after takeoff to commemorate the occasion. He also spoke about the future operation of the A380 in Emirates.

Next, I met up with an engineer Amjad, who showed me all the items the ground engineering team installed while the new airplane arrived in Dubai.

I will never forget seeing the maiden A380 departure in Toulouse on 27th April 2005. It is hard to believe that the A380 is now saying goodbye to the Airbus factory, just 16 years later. The A380 has touched the lives of so many passengers by setting new standards in terms of flying and travel experience. Wish the new A380 many more happy landings!

A lot has happened over the past year in aviation, and we’re sure to see more change as the market improves. The impact on quadjets, though, is likely to be permanent. Many A380s have been retired already, and over the coming decade, they will become an ever rarer sight. But… What’s to become of these superjumbo jets in the coming years? Today we take a look…

A New A380 Era: The 2021 Rise Of The Superjumbo

For most of the past year, it seemed like the Airbus A380 was doomed because of the global health crisis. At one point, there were no A380s flying! Moreover, operators such as Air France and Lufthansa retired their units. However, despite the mass groundings, the superjumbo is seeing a positive twist of fate...

The Rise and Fall of the A380

The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger and most expensive airliner in the world. Last week, Airbus announced it will end production of the A380 in 2021.

How the once promising Airbus superjumbo went from airline status symbol to reject in just 10 years? Let’s take a look at the rise and fall of the A380 in this special documentary video.

--

The Airbus A380 will hold a special place in many aeroplane enthusiast’s hearts considering its status as the world’s largest passenger airline and its sophisticated, luxurious and spacious first class suites, complete even with an entire bathroom and shower. However, it is undeniable that this aeroplane did not successfully challenge the Boeing 747’s dominance in the long haul flight market, as was Airbus’s aim, and was something of a commercial failure – not only did delays in the development of the model cause much higher than projected development costs, but Airbus have admitted that they are unlikely to be able to recoup the full staggering 25 billion euro price tag on bringing this model to market. This video sheds light on went wrong for this giant of the aeroplane industry, the super jumbo jet.

The Airbus A380 was aimed at airlines operating from airports with high levels of aeroplane congestion. With its two deck layout with space enough theoretically for 853 passengers, it seemed like the perfect plane to aim at airlines performing long haul flights with limited timeframes during each day to take off to make for a convenient arrival time at the destination. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the airline Emirates was the biggest purchaser of this model of plane, as it seemed perfect for their business model which has always involved funnelling a large volume of flights through Abu Dhabi airport.

However, the 20th century, four engine design made the cost per seat for the airline very high and despite the extra money that customers were willing to pay to travel with increased room and comfort, and the promise by Airbus that these planes would be the answer to the highly time-slot constrained nature of major international airports such as London Heathrow, significant orders from airline giants such as British Airways never materialised.

Though the Dubai base of the Emirates airline became a swarm of A380’s, other major international hubs like Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul were instead thriving on smaller aeroplanes, with Airbus’s smaller A350 emerging as the apparent major future workhorse for these airports.

Production of the A380 is set to cease in 2021, after the biggest customer for these super jumbo jets, Emirates, cancelled its most recent order for 39 of them but we can expect to see the Airbus A380 still touching down and taking off well in to the 2030’s, especially as airlines will want to get the most out of these expensive and large aeroplanes, which are not expected to have great second-hand value.

The Airbus A380 is evidence that, at least in the aviation industry, bigger is not always better but the aeroplane will still be forever cherished as that great and luxurious whale of the skies.

Emirates Upgraded A380 - World’s Largest Aircraft Retrofit Program

Emirates is upgrading its popular A380 fleet! The largest known retrofit program in the industry is well underway at Emirates Engineering. I toured inside the A380 superjumbo during its maintenance.

Project Phoenix oversees 67 A380s and 53 Boeing 777s being refurbished. Concerning the A380, a total of 728 first class, 5,092 business class, 1,608 new premium economy, and 24,000 economy seats are involved in the procedure. The program began in November 2022 and is set to be wrapped up by May 2025.

Emirates Engineering explained that every time an A380 comes in for a six-year or 12-year check. All the seats, lavatories, galleys, and monuments are ejected to leave the entire interior bare for floor panel check. When the materials are removed, Emirates Engineering will replace or refurbish them to keep the cabin in pristine condition. After seeing an A380 under heavy maintenance check, I toured a refurbished A380 that is ready in service to see the difference.

Next, I visited the cabin interior seat shop where you can find all the seats came in bare skeleton form. The engineer also demonstrated how to inflate safety evacuation slides in just 6 seconds. Last, some of the old seat covers and materials are being turned into collectibles and memorabilia!

Emirates is looking to keep at least 90 A380s in the air by the 2030s and plans to fly the A380 until the 2040s.

A380s Scrapped: How Many Superjumbo’s Have Been Retired So Far?

***Since the production of this video, Hi Fly and Singapore Airlines have also decided to retire some or all of their A380s. Additionally, Lufthansa is not expecting to fly the A380 again.***

The Airbus A380 is an awe-inspiring aircraft. However, as a type, the giant of the skies never really took off in terms of sales. It had just 251 firm orders on the books when Airbus announced in February 2019 that production would end by 2021.

The Airbus A380plus & A380neo – Was There A Future?

The Airbus A380 program was short enough that the world only ever got one version: the A380-800. But what if Airbus had gone ahead with plans to build an updated A380? Could it have saved the program?

The Logistics Of An Airbus A380 Private Jet

Private and VIP versions of many types of commercial aircraft are in service worldwide, some used by governments, some by companies, and some even by individuals. A wide range of narrowbody and widebody aircraft are used, but as yet, there has never been a private A380.

Such an aircraft would offer lots of options for interiors and fittings, as well as an impressive range. So far though, the arguments against it have won out – but could this change?

The Second-Hand Airbus A380 Market Is Over

The A380 has struggled to find its place in the modern world with airlines looking to more efficient twinjets for their future fleets. Airbus had hoped there would be a solid second-hand market for its A380 aircraft, many of which are already retiring very young. But with the only used A380 operator, Hi Fly, unable to make it work, is the second-hand market for the giant plane over?
