The huge frozen landmass at the bottom of our planet is more than just spectacular icing on the globe. It could be vital for our survival too.

The Antarctic ice deflects some of the sun’s rays away from the Earth, keeping temperatures liveable.

Although it’s not predicted that the massive Antarctic ice sheets are likely to melt completely, even small-scale melting would raise global sea levels, and cause flooding around the world.

The ocean surrounding the continent also support masses of the world’s sealife – including 15 species of whale and dolphin, and five species of penguin. The nutrient-rich waters encourage blooms of tiny plankton, the basis of the ocean food chain.

Antarctica is one of the world's most important ‘natural laboratories’ – which is why so many scientists brave the cold to work there. As well as helping us understand global climate change now, the unique archive locked in Antarctica’s thick ice sheet tells us what our planet's climate has been like over almost a million years.

Antarctica is a vast ice-covered landmass surrounded by sea (unlike the Arctic, which is an ice-covered ocean surrounded by land). It’s bigger than Europe, and in summer, it's still 62 times the size of the UK!

Antarctica is the world’s highest, driest, windiest and coldest continent. Its record low temperature is -94°C. But it doesn’t actually snow much – the Antarctic is so dry it’s classed as a polar desert.

Antarctica: The Frozen Continent

We enjoyed a truly awesome adventure to Antarctica and South Georgia Island on the Seaborne Quest. The scale of the scenery of hard to convey, but hopefully this video will give you a sense of the beauty of Antarctica. It was a great trip, but the highlight for us was walking among 400,000 King penguins on South Georgia. We are humbled by the insignificance of humans in the context of Antarctica (iceberg ice is about 15,000 years old), and at the same time, horrified at human destruction to our planet.

Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent. Situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean, it contains the geographic South Pole. Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent, being nearly twice the size of Australia, and has an area of 14,200,000 km2 (5,500,000 sq mi). During the summer months 5,000 people reside at research stations, a figure that drops to around 1,000 in the winter. Most of Antarctica is covered by ice, with an average thickness of 1.9 km (1.2 mi).

Antarctica is on average the coldest, driest, and windiest of the continents, and has the highest average elevation. It is mainly a polar desert, with annual precipitation of 200 mm (8 in) along the coast and far less inland. About 70% of the world's freshwater reserves are frozen there, which if melted would raise global sea levels by about 60 metres (200 ft). Antarctica holds the record for the lowest measured temperature on Earth, −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F). The average temperature for the third quarter (the coldest part of the year) is −63 °C (−81 °F). Native species of animals include mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation consists of tundra.

Teeming with life ranging from polar bears to arctic foxes, there are so many things to see. It's a place that as soon as you leave, you long to go back. Situated in the most northern part of Norway. Longyearbyen is the north most town in the world.

Greenland Drone Flight: Greenland is a massive island and autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Much of its land surface is covered in ice. Most of its small population lives along the ice-free, fjord-lined coast, particularly in the southwest. Its northerly position, largely above the Arctic Circle, results in natural phenomena such as summers midnight sun and winters Northern Lights. With few roads, travel in Greenland is mainly by air or boat. Glaciers, whales, seals and polar bears can be seen on coastal cruises and on flightseeing trips from the capital Nuuk. The Sarfaq Ittuk ferry links Qaqortoq village to the icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord. Hiking, snowmobile and dogsled expeditions visit the ice-covered interior. In Nuuk, the Greenland National Museums collections include geological exhibits and 15th-century mummies. Nuuk Art Museum displays Inuit carvings. About Greenland: Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat, pronounced [kalaːɬit nunaːt]; Danish: Grønland, pronounced [ˈkʁɶnˌlænˀ]) is the worlds largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium. The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through Northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century.
