Ride with me from Miami to the Florida Keys, to the quirky, colorful and tropical town Key West - to the Southernmost point of the United States, and explore the gems along the way. One of the longest bridges in the world, an overseas highway from island to island.
The highlights and to DOs of a journey on the Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West:
- Rent a Harely Davidson to travel in style
- As soon as you turn onto US Route 1, getting lost or taking a wrong turn on your way to Key West would be a great archivemnent. You just follow Highway 1 South for the next 125 miles or 200 kilometers - and you will arrive in Key West.
- Stay at one of the the other Keys to safe some money - for example at Islamorada.
- There is one iconic dish you need to try when visiting they Keys - and Casamar Market close to Islamorada is indeed one of the best stores to get your hands on this delicious seafood: Stone crab claws.
- Go fishing in the Florida Keys!
- The overseas Highway crosses the Florida Keys archipelago. The series of islands dotted in the azure ocean, composed of the Upper keys, Middle keys and lower keys are linked together by several bridges that form the overseas Highway.
- Have breakfast at famous Robbie's restaurant
- The Seven Miles Bridge in Florida one of the longest bridges in the world. It is flying over the deep blue of the Gulf of Mexico over 11 kilometres and connects Knight key to Little Duck key from the Gulf of Mexico to the Florida Strait. And yes, it is definitely the most spectacular part when riding the Florida Keys all the way to Key West.
- The city of Key West with its tropical, nonchalant and rebellious atmosphere is a true symbol of the east coast of the United States. It is located only 90 miles or 150km from Cuba and offers a unique free-spirit vibe. Indeed Key West even has its own flag. The so called „Conch Republic“.
- Visit the most southernmost point of continental USA
- Located on Whitehead Street in Old Town, you can visit Ernest Hemingway’s former home, where he lived for ten years. Today, the house is a museum, and you can see Hemingsway typewriter, living rooms, kitchen and bathroom.
- Ride a Jet Ski to a sandbank and mangrove tunnels
- When in Florida, make sure to not miss out on a Cuban breakfast - for example at Sunrise Cafe!

The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost part of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles from Cuba.
One of the longest bridges when it was built, the Seven Mile Bridge connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon in the Middle Keys) to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2,369-mile U.S. Route 1.

The Overseas Highway is a 113-mile (181.9 km) highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys to Key West. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000.
Since the 1950s the Overseas Highway has been refurbished into a main coastal highway between the cities of Miami and Key West, offering travelers an exotic roadway through a tropical savanna environment and access to the largest area of coral reefs on the U.S. mainland. Many exotic animals such as the American Alligator, American Crocodile and Key Deer inhabit the tropical islands of the Florida Keys.
In 2001, the Monroe County Commission, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Greenways and Trails, and FDOT entered into a Memorandum of understanding to create the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (FKOHT). The trail will be a multi-use bicycle and pedestrian facility that will traverse the Florida Keys from Key Largo to Key West. Upon completion, the FKOHT will include an integrated system of educational kiosks, roadside picnic areas, scenic overlooks, fishing piers, water access points, and bicycle and jogging paths. The development of the trail will provide a mechanism for the preservation and use of the historic Flagler Railroad Bridges, 23 of which still exist and are mostly intact. Several alternatives exist for trail alignment, including cutting down the 22-foot-wide (6.7 m), 1940s-era roadway to its original 12-foot (3.7 m) spandrel width, or using the 22-foot-wide (6.7 m) roadway as is, particularly in multi-use areas. In all cases, original bridgework will be repaired or rebuilt, and the breaks created during the 1980s and 1990s fishing pier conversion will be reconnected. Where the original roadway no longer exists, the trail will be temporarily cantilevered on the side of the current US 1 highway bridge, until new 12-foot-wide (3.7 m) trail bridge sections can be built. The new sections will be built to match the historical character of the original bridges.

Florida Keys Overseas Highway is named All-American Road
The Florida Keys Overseas Highway, from just north of Key Largo to Key West, is now an All-American Road.
The designation was announced Friday by Federal transportation officials, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The Keys highway is the only All-American Road in Florida. It's the highest recognition possible under the National Scenic Byways program established by the U.S. Congress in 1991. Only 30 other roadways in the nation have earned the prestigious title.
Originally completed in 1938, the Overseas Highway incorporates 42 bridges over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. They include the Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, which stretches 6.79 miles across open water and was referred to on its completion as the eighth wonder of the world.
Under the Federal Highway Administrations National Scenic Byways program, roads can be recognized as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.
To earn All-American Road status, a thoroughfare must possess characteristics of national significance and features that don't exist elsewhere, making it a visitor destination in itself.
The Overseas Highway follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Standard Oil millionaire Henry Flagler completed the extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West. Construction of the highway began after the railroad ceased following a 1935 hurricane.
In 1982, 37 of the original bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge were replaced with wider spans. Most of the historic bridges still stand alongside the newer ones and now serve as fishing piers for anglers.

Aerial of the Florida Keys featuring the Overseas Highway and the Seven Mile Bridge. We follow the Highway 1 with aerial footage from Islamorada to Marathon Florida. The original roadway from the Mainland to Key West opened in 1928 as State Road 4A, however there was a 41 mile gap from Lower Matecumbe and No Name Keys. When the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed parts fo the Overseas Railroad, the bridges where retrofitted with concrete for vehicular traffice. In 1938 the highway opened as Route 1 and finally connected Key West with the Mainland.
The Seven Mile bridge is actually 6.79 miles and opened in 1982. The old bridge is now used for pedestrian and bicyclist traffic. In 2014 the Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 Million plan to restore the old bridge.
We used the new X-Star Premium drone for this. We have done reviews on the picture quality which is much better than the Phantom . but this video was impressed with how it dealt with wind. At times we had very strong gusts of wind, probably about 25mph, and it the drone still remained very steady, and even against the wind was still able to maintain about 7-10mph.

After exploring the great places in Florida, a few viewers suggested to visit the Florida Keys. This isn't a short journey; rather an epic drive along the 113 miles of Overseas Highway with its stunning views surrounded by ocean. And as gorgeous as the drive was, it was the stops along the way that made it fun and exciting.
First stop, a little breakfast to start the day and the Cracker Barrel, then visiting Robbie's Marina with a full tourist mindset... that certainly was a must see stop with so many attractions: excursions, water sports, a drink or two, and of course, feeding those tarpons!
But along the drive, I did notice a sign that was too good to be true...an all you can eat Seafood buffet along the way...for mountains of blue crab and lobsters too (well, not a whole lobster, but it will suffice).
And at the end on the line, the most southern part of the US, I arrive at Key West! Reaching mile zero took me to a place of a time gone by...yard birds roaming the streets, the sights and smells of great eats, and the friendly atmosphere. Being only here once in a blue moon, I certainly had to indulges in those crispy, fluffy conch fritters and end with a slice of key lime pie.

[4k] Florida Keys & Overseas Highway Aerial Deep House
There was once a time when the only way to get to Key West was by boat. Then came the oil and rail magnate Henry Flagler whose goal was to extend the railroad further south 156 miles from Miami to Key West. Construction began in 1905 and in 1912 the Overseas Railroad to Key West was finally completed. The Overseas Railroad remains the most ambitious engineering feat ever undertaken by a private citizen.
Up till this point you could only access Key West by boat, train and ferry. In the 1920’s Monroe County and Dade County worked together to make traveling to the Florida Keys even more accessible to the mainland by building a route for motor vehicles along State Road 4A, or what is now called Card Sound Road. Over the years portions of road were built, but still no route the entire way to Key West.
In 1935 disaster struck. Much of the road along with the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, a Category 5 hurricane which is often called The Storm of the Century killing over 400 people.
The county doubled down on repairs and new construction and the Overseas Highway was reopened for traffic on March 29, 1938. The Overseas Highway, running from the mainland to Key West, connects all of the main islands and is one of the longest overwater roads in the world, with 42 bridges, including one 7-mile span.

Matty Meltzer 'Drives' the Florida Keys Overseas Highway - Key West
Often referred to as the Highway that Goes to Sea, the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is the only roadway that stretches through the entire island chain. Also Florida's only federally designated All-American Road, it features more than 40 bridges over water and a variety of sights and activities to enjoy. To highlight the best points of interest along the way, special correspondent Matty Meltzer -- who happens to be both an intrepid traveler and a wisecracking puppet -- was commissioned to chronicle memorable stops on a road trip through the Florida Keys.

Florida Keys Overseas Highway Drive to Key West
Riding the Florida Keys Scenic Overseas Highway all the way out to Key West. The 120-mile chain of islands can be reached by U.S. 1 south of Miami Beach.
Each Key is linked to the next by the scenic bridge structures of the Overseas Highway, which was first built atop the remains of tycoon Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad.
Although the major U.S. airlines offer convenient flights to the Marathon and Key West airports. The drive is the only tropical getaway reachable by car from the U.S. mainland, and considered one of the best in America.
