William Dalrymple with Fergal Keane: Rapacity and Excess in Imperial India

In the hands of William Dalrymple, history becomes a rip-roaring, rollicking adventure; the reader embarking on a visceral odyssey into the subject thanks to Dalrymple’s glorious gift for storytelling and his eye for detail. In The Anarchy, the Delhi-based writer has turned his hand to a study of corporate greed in Imperial India, with the rise to prominence of the East India Company. This, according to Dalrymple, was aggressive colonial power in the guise of a multinational business. Within the space of four decades the East India Company had assembled a security force of more than 200,000 people – twice the size of the British army – and had subdued an entire continent.

In this event the celebrated Scottish writer talks to BBC special correspondent Fergal Keane about India’s turbulent history under imperial rule. Part of the 2020 Edinburgh International Book Festival Online.

Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) Enters 2016 Presidential Race (almost) - YouTube

Imagine if Elizabeth Warren was running for president right now...
Who would be most effected by that?
How would Hillary do against Elizabeth Warren?
Shouldn't the aim of political parties be to put the 'best' candidates forward no matter what, and not to appease the establishment, staying to the status quo..money rules the Democratic party as much as it does the Republicans, establishment wants things to stay the same...
But the people want change....

But alas, Elizabeth Warren is not running and I fully believe that the DNC has a lot to do about that....Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Democratic National Committee knew that Clinton did not stand a chance against Warren, and then put Sanders in the equation and the Democrat Establishment would have disintegrated in much the same manner as the Republicans are doing with Cruz and Trump.
Not easy bringing change when you come up against a mountain of money and the 1%.

IN SERVICE OF JOHN COMPANY: LIFE IN THE ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY IN ASIA (c1800s)

By 1800, the English East India Company (EIC) was already a formidable presence in India, with factories stretching throughout Southeast Asia. Trade routes were relatively well known, and so too, the profits that some private trade could yield. What then, was it like to work for the EIC? What could one expect on a voyage out to Asia? How did factory life operate and why were some postings more desired than others? How were factory gossip and reports on the lives of EIC servants important in shaping careers and fortunes?

By asking such questions and examining sources from the EIC, including artefacts from the National Museum of Singapore’s An Old New World Bicentennial exhibition, Dr Donna Brunero explores a deeper understanding of the EIC and the lure (and sometimes trials and tribulations) of a career in Asia.

Coronation Street Set Tour | Review

Coronation Street is a world famous, British serial drama created by Granada Television and shown on UK ITV since 1960. It is also syndicated worldwide.
The programme centres around Coronation Street: a cobbled, terraced street in Weatherfield a fictional Northern English town.
The production is filmed in a purpose built studios and external set complex near Manchester's Media City, constructed in 2013.
At weekends there is the opportunity for limited numbers of the public to take a paid tour of the external filming sets.
In May 2022 I was invited to a tour... so this video is a record of what I found and a review of my tour.
Spoiler alert, I thought the tour was fantastic - 10/10

Originally broadcast twice weekly from 1960, Coronation Street began airing six times a week in 2017. The series was conceived by scriptwriter Tony Warren in 1959. it was first broadcast in the UK on 09/12/1960 , and the show has since become a significant part of British culture.
Coronation Street today is made by ITV Granada at Manchester's MediaCityUK and shown in all ITV regions, as well as internationally.
In 2010, it became the world's longest-running television soap opera. Initially influenced by the conventions of kitchen sink realism, Coronation Street is noted for its depiction of a down-to-earth, working-class community, combined with light-hearted humour and strong characters.
The show currently averages around six million viewers per episode. The show premiered its 10,000th episode on 7 February 2020, and celebrated its 60th anniversary later that year, which included a visit by Queen Elizabeth II.

The ITV Media City studios and set was purpose built in 2013 for the production of Coronation Street. During the week it is a busy film studios, but at the weekend it is open for pre-booked tours of the exterior sets. Offering limited numbers of the public the opportunity to visit iconic set buildings, such as The Rover's Return, the most famous fictional Pub in the world. Owned by the fictional brewery 'Newton & Ridley'. Ken Barlow's House at No 1 Coronation Street. Original Character Ken Barlow is still played by veteran actor William Roache (90) who was in the first episode in 1960, and is now in the record books as the worlds longest serving actor in a single role.

Highlights of the tour include: The Rovers Return Pub, The Kabin, Roy's Rolls, The Weatherfield Police Station and Court House. Dressed sets such as Websters Garage and Petals. Even the newest addition to the Coronation Street universe, the probably soon to be busy Shuttleworth's Funeral Services.

THE BORING PART! [litw 2]

As with most trilogies, the middle episode is rather dull and rambling, but serves as a bridge for those who want a more complete story. Again, this is uncut and raw.
