Journey Through China's Cities - Urban Travel Documentary

Get Surfshark VPN at - Enter promo code HOFFER for 83% off and get 3 extra months for free!

China is one of the world’s most fascinating and complicated countries, and its cities seem to get bigger every year. Considered a rural society just a few decades ago, China today is home to the world’s largest urban population.

In this travel documentary, I take you on a journey through some of the country’s most interesting cities. While many city centers are filled with modern skyscrapers, we also search for more traditional neighborhoods, historic sites, tranquil parks, special events, and cultural activities. We look at the rapid changes China is undergoing in its urbanization process, and mention some of the challenges the country is facing.

From the modern megacities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou we travel to the ancient centers of Beijing and Xian. We visit the popular Summer holiday beaches of coastal Qingdao, and the exciting Winter festivals of Harbin. From the streets of fusion cities like Hong Kong and Macau we continue our journey to Tibetan Lhasa, located on the Rooftop of the World. We also take a look at the disappearing alleys of old Kashgar, in the controversial Xinjiang region, and the empty streets of Ordos, China’s best known ghost town. And we explore the expanding urban centers along the Yangtze river, including Wuhan and Chongqing, all the way to the fast paced metropolis of Shanghai.

I traveled through China independently for more than a decade, on several occasions. The footage in this video was shot between 2010 and 2019, and is accompanied by background information. For more in-depth information on each place, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin our journey in Shanghai, one of China’s most remarkable cities. Its skyline has become a symbol for the country’s economic growth. While we look at the modern face of Shanghai, I also visit some more traditional neighborhoods, even though they are disappearing fast.

We travel onwards to Harbin, in the North of China, to visit a spectacular Winter festival, with sculptures and palaces made from ice and snow, which draws millions of tourists every year. Beijing, the nation’s capital, is our next destination. This is the political heart of China, but also brims with culture and creativity.

In Chongqing, located on the mighty Yangtze river, we witness some of the urbanization process, while in Lhasa we look at the traditions and customs of the Tibetan people. We travel onwards to Xian, where we walk on the ancient city walls, eat some delicious food in the Muslim neighborhood, and visit the magnificent Terracotta Army.

After Xian, we travel to Ordos, China’s best known ‘ghost town’. After which we continue our way to Kashgar, in the now controversial Xinjiang region, where the faith of the Uyghur people hangs in the balance. Qingdao is our next destination, one of China’s most beautiful coastal cities, where we also explore some of the suburbs.

Hong Kong is perhaps the perfect mix between East and West. A short ferry ride away, Macau retains some of its Portuguese history, but is also known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’ with its many casinos. Just across the ‘border’ from both, Shenzhen has grown into one of China’s largest and wealthiest cities, while it was just a small fishing village 40 years ago.

The last two cities we visit are Wuhan and Guangzhou, which have their own distinct character. I visited Wuhan before the pandemic broke out, and found a sprawling city. Guangzhou is also a vast metropolis, and is known for its Cantonese culture and cuisine.

Travel in China E02 My Journey on the Silk Road 游走中国 第二集 我的丝路

This is the 2nd episode of the documentary series Travel in China 游走中国 is a travel documentary that retraces the route taken by ancient Chinese people. The film crew drove along the ancient Silk Road from Xi’an to Tianshui, Lanzhou, Zhangye, Dunhuang and the Jiayu Pass. During the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), Zhang Qian expanded the Road for imperial envoys and thus contributed to a giant leap in relations between China and countries in Central Asia. The production team traveled thousands of miles through the provinces of Shanxi and Gansu as well as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, exploring the history of this ancient road and documenting its new look. This documentary examines a possible driving route for foreign visitors and serves as a promotional film for road trips in China.

The Chinese New Silk Road Aerial - Xinjiang - The Journey Begins

The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It was central to cultural interaction between the regions for many centuries.[1][2][3] The Silk Road refers to both the terrestrial and the maritime routes connecting East Asia and Southeast Asia with East Africa, West Asia and Southern Europe.

The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, beginning in the Han dynasty (207 BCE–220 CE). The Han dynasty expanded the Central Asian section of the trade routes around 114 BCE through the missions and explorations of the Chinese imperial envoy Zhang Qian.[4] The Chinese took great interest in the safety of their trade products and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.[5]

Trade on the Road played a significant role in the development of the civilizations of China, Korea,[6] Japan,[2] India, Iran, Afghanistan, Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia, opening long-distance political and economic relations between the civilizations.[7] Though silk was the major trade item exported from China, many other goods were traded, as well as religions, syncretic philosophies, sciences, and technologies. Diseases, most notably plague, also spread along the Silk Road.[8] In addition to economic trade, the Silk Road was a route for cultural trade among the civilizations along its network.[9]

Traders in ancient history included the Bactrians, Sogdians, Syrians, Jews, Arabs, Iranians, Turkmens, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Somalis, Greeks, Romans, Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijanis.

CHINA - THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road is the world's oldest, and most historically important overland trade route. For over 2000 years, traders and merchants travelled the deserts of central Asia exchanging goods between the Chinese empire and the rest of the world. As a result, the oases of the desert sprang up into dynamic cities. A vast network of interconnected caravan routes that stretched for over 6,500 klm enabled the exchange of products and ideas between China and the rest of the world. The Silk Road began around 329 BCE, when Alexander the Great conquered the entire known world and promoted trade to the east and got its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade along it. Though silk was certainly the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded, and various technologies, religions and philosophies. The great story of the Silk Road is that Buddhism travelled on it, from India.
The dry climate has preserved many ruins, while many ethnic groups make their home in this part of China. The Ancient Silk Road started at Xian and then it reached Dunhuang, where it divided into three, the Southern, Central and the Northern Route. The pictures in this video start in Xian and cover the northern route. Xian is one of the oldest cities of China with more than 3,100 years of history. It is home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The terracotta warriors, is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210--209 BC and whose purpose was to protect him in his afterlife. Lanzhou is the next stop. 100km SE on the Yellow River, are the Bingling Temple Caves. The first begun around 420 CE at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty. Work continued and more grottoes were added during the Wei, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Their inaccessibility spared them from destruction during the Cultural Revolution, while an 80-foot Buddha is carved into the cliff. Dunhuang is located between the Taklamakan desert and Gobi desert. Taklamakan is the world's second largest shifting sand desert after Sahara. The Mogao caves, also called Thousand Buddha caves (the first was carved in 366AD) have the best Buddhist murals in the world. In Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region, China's largest province with only 20 million inhabitants, we visit Turpan, Urumqi and Kashgar. Turpan's, Flaming Mountains, the hottest place in China, overshadow the cradle of the Turpan ancient civilization and oasis agriculture. Here we see the Gaochang city ruins, the former Uyghur capital (1st c BC) and the ancient Buddhist city of GaoHe Kerez (2nd c. BC). Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and once an important station on the Silk Road, famous for being a major city furthest from any ocean. Kashgar, or Kashi, is a city with a history of more than 2,000 years. It was historically considered as the gateway and hub for the transfer of goods from China to Central Asia and Europe along the ancient Silk Road. Kashgar preserves the most complete Uygur culture, art and architecture and is famous for its bazaar and animal market. Starting in Beijing, The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, to protect the Chinese Empire against the enemies, while its border controls allowed the imposition of duties of goods transported along the Silk Road. The entire wall with all its branches measure 21,000 klm. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC. Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political center of the country and is renowned for its palaces, temples, gardens, tombs, walls gates and art treasures.

When you think of China, you probably don't think of Islam and Halal food, but that's exactly what you'll find in the Northwest, especially as you make your way further west. We made our way for a food trip to the dusty and bustling classic Silk Road city of Xining specifically to try the unique halal food of the Hui people. This is the side of China not many people experience or even travel to, and we came here to have an authentic travel and food tour. We found a ton of food similar to countries further west, with insane amounts of BBQ lamb and beef leaving me and Ting Ting absolutely speechless.

Uzbekistan - Along the Silk Road - Episode 1

#uzbekistan #silkroad #andy1803
This video is the summary of our last adventure in Uzbekistan, a ten days trip along the old silk road, discovering this exciting central Asia Republic. I must say “discovering” at least for me because it was really a surprise day by day, a full immersion in the history, traditions, culture and nature of a country full of wonders.

The journey started from Tashkent but we could not visit the largest city of Uzbekistan due to some flights delay, so effectively the first town of this film is Samarkand, the beautiful residence of emperor Temur.
After Samarkand we crossed the Quizilcum desert, with a brief stop in Nurata, the oasis inside the desert where Alexander the great built a fortress during his conquest campaign towards east Asia. Actually the town is important for a pilgrimage sanctuary just below the ruins.
After a night under the starry sky of Quizilcum in a Yurt Camp and a swim the morning after in the beauty of lake Aydarkul, we arrived in Buchara, the magnificent city over the world famous for its carpets production.
Next step, reached by train, was the ancient Korasmia, once an independent kingdom. The Khan of Korasmia lived in Khiva, the historical town, today UNESCO world heritage. In the alleys of the well preserved fortified citadel, middle age atmospheres are still breathable.
The last part of the journey was inside the Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic inside Uzbekistan. Our final target was the Aral Sea. The lake, once wide as real sea, actually shrinks progressively due to its drying up. Aral Sea death is probably one of the most well documented disaster caused by human activities, especially those started in Soviet Union era. A part ecologic interest, anyway, all the area around the Aral Sea is still exciting for its primordial landscapes.
During this challenging experience the tour touched Nukus, the main city of Karakalpakstan, Moynaq, once a fishermen village and now 120 kilometres far from the lake front, Myzdakhan, an ancient necropolis still in use, and Urgench where our trip finished.

It was, as I said, a great experience. We discover a country different from our and, moreover, we met its friendly people I’m sure I won’t forget. Almost everywhere we got a warm hospitality, feeling that people were pleased by our presence.
To get the best from a trip like this, it is fundamental to rely on local resources. So we did. We found a higher level of competence I could not imagine. It is mandatory for me to thank some of them here.
Responsible Travel is an uzbek tour operator located in Jizzakh but contactable from every part of the world ( It was our referent for logistic, tour planning, transports, etc. Ask of Mr. Sherzod Norbekov, whatever you may need he will find the best solution for you.
The Aral Sea expedition was amazing and interesting thank to Utepov Sarsenbay Joldasbayevich, simply Sarsen for friends, of Aral Sea Tours ( If you want to explore Karakalpakstan, ask him. He is the top.
Last, but not least, I must thank our drivers, especially Jamol and Kolja. When you travel “on the road”, it is important to trust in good drivers and they were really super.

As I said, this video is a summary of our trip in Uzbekistan, a sort of “trailer” with a quick overview of the journey. Some others will follow asap to describe more in detail the different stages (Samarkand, Buchara, Khiva, Nurata, Aydarkul, Aral sea, etc.). So, if you are interested, stay tuned for next uploads subscribing and activating notifications.

Some technical information. Mostly for filming I used an Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII mirrorless camera and a GoPro Hero 7 black. Some short clips from the car however have been filmed using an I-phone 7. For Color grading, post-production and editing, I used Cyberlink Powerdirector suite 5, as always. Photos, in this film and in the next ones, are mostly by Francesca Sparatore, shot with a Nikon D3100.
The track “Run” is by Kai Engel, an extraordinary composer, and is available on Free Music Archive.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.

The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.

In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.

Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Overland Silk Road: 2 years 70000 Km solo road trip in our van from Europe to Japan and back

A road trip that proved much more challenging than we expected.
This short movie will give you a taste of what we have been through.

Our goal was to visit as many remote places as possible and spend time with locals as much as we could to learn about what they have been through in the past and the way they live nowadays. It’s been an incredibly enriching experience.

We ended up driving and living around the following nations:
Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia And Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Kurdistan, Abkhazia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh), Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Korea, Japan, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Buryatia Republic, Mongolia, Altai Republic, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Kalmykia, Chechen Republic, Dagestan, Nakhchivan Republic, Romania, Ukraine, Transnistria, Moldova, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, France.

Main challenges have been: Cancelled visas, some countries with date-specific visas forcing us to be at a border on a specific day and therefore having to kind of plan our whole trip backwards, rough off-road tracks in remote areas, harsh climate ranging from +47c in Iran to -27c in Siberia. Seasons were also an important factor, even though it is not possible to be in every spot at the best time of the year, seasons can definitively enlighten or ruin your trip!

ABOUT ME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello there, welcome to this channel!

I am an Indonesian female solo traveler, who started solo traveling in 2013. After working for the government till 2016, I left Indonesia to pursue full-time traveling and to document myself as I explore different cultures as a solo female.

Having initially traveled for 5 months throughout Asia, I moved to China in January 2017 for an English teaching job, which was my first experience living abroad.

Since leaving China in 2018, I have taken the move to become a full-time YouTube creator and traveler. I strive to create unique, culture-driven content and capture authentic interactions as I travel.
