The Best Local Pastries and Bakeries of Hong Kong

Hong Kong has some of the best baked goods on the planet! Join us as we taste all the best local pastries of Hong Kong in one day. We visit Mammy Pancake for some tasty egg waffles in a variety of flavours, including sweet potato and green tea. We also stop by Tai Cheong Bakery for their perfect egg tarts, Hang Heung for their delicious wife cakes and Kam Wah Cafe for their freshly baked pineapple buns, best enjoyed with a cup of milk tea. At Ming Wah Bakery, we experienced a more traditional local bakery, which has loads of cheap and delicious Chinese baked goods and treats including coconut tarts, red bean cakes and bananas rolls. It’s all here in our latest episode of Hawker Style, our original travel videos series exploring street food from across the globe.

William Cheung, who appeared in the Netflix series Restaurants on the Edge, shows us how his family's bakery, Kee Tsui Cake Shop, makes their famous wife cakes and why they've stuck to the traditional way of doing things.

10 BEST FOODS to eat in Hong Kong (and exactly WHERE to get them) | THE CLASSIC HONG KONG FOOD TOUR

WELCOME TO HONG KONG!
Whether you're just coming to visit, or you've just moved to Hong Kong or you're moving out of Hong Kong and want to make sure you haven't left any stones unturned before you leave, this is the tour! This is what you have to eat in Hong Kong before leaving! The MUST EATS of Hong Kong. These are the most classic, well known, and famous Hong Kong dishes and foods. Make sure to try out these foods at their most famous restaurants respectively to really get in the ultimate Hong Kong food experience.

All these restaurants are super well known so don't worry if they look off the beaten path because they're not. Also, whoever tells you these places are hidden gems are clearly lying to you LOL English menus are available at all these places with the exception of Joy Hing so don't worry. This Hong Kong food tour is meant for you to do it yourself so it shouldn't be intimidating. This food tour is also within a small area (the more touristy areas of Hong Kong) so you'll be able to do it within a few hours though I would recommend you spilt it up before two days as there is quite a bit of food.

Once you've done this, come back and we'll go through the more hidden gems of Hong Kong but start here first so you get a basic food foundation of the flavours of Hong Kong. =) If you go straight to the hidden gems without a base, you'll won't really understand why those are hidden gems, if that makes sense.

EDIT: Just doing my tour guide training and there's a correction. Cookie crust arrived in Hong Kong in the 1940's and puff pastry in the 1950's.

How Hong Kong's Signature Pineapple Bun Gets Made

Pineapple buns are a staple in Chinese bakeries around the world. The pastry, with its pineapple-shaped crust, is so iconic that in 2014, the government of Hong Kong listed the process for making it as an intangible cultural heritage. But where did the pineapple bun come from? We went to one of the first pineapple bun bakeries in Hong Kong to find out.

Rediscovering an 80-Year-Old Family Recipe for Rice Cake

Gooey, chewy, and fluffy all at once, sweet rice cakes are a popular snack across southern China, often eaten as a dessert or afternoon pick-me-up. And this family in New York has been making them for over 80 years.

Paul Eng is the third-generation owner of Fong On, but when he took over the business in 2017, there was one problem: he didn’t know the recipes. So he had to learn everything from scratch and in the process rediscovered his family’s legacy.

Tai Cheong Bakery Is A Sweet Reminder Of Hong Kong Heritage

Like cheesecake is to New York or madeleines are to Paris, the egg tart is the darling of Hong Kong desserts. Silky egg custard, held in a shell of buttery, crumbly biscuit baked fresh out of the oven – what’s not to love?

Egg tarts have been a Hong Kong staple since the 1940s and Tai Cheong Bakery, which opened in 1954 on Lyndhurst Terrace where the original store still stands, remains a favorite amongst locals and tourists alike. Today, the store sells over 3000 egg tarts daily.

Hong Kong's Unique Local Cafe Food!

Hong Kong has some of the best food scenes in the world. It serves the best Chinese cuisine and is even home to some of the best western style restaurants. If you’re looking for quality Chinese food or Michelin star restaurants Hong Kong is the place to visit. However, most tourists and visitors to Hong Kong don’t experience a type of cuisine known as ‘Hong Kong Style’. Many Hong Kongers who have moved overseas go crazy nostalgic for Hong Kong Style staples like ham and instant noodle broth or the famous spam and egg sandwich. This ‘weird’ blend of Asian and Western cuisine comes from Hong Kong’s mixed past and has truly engrained in Hong Kong culture. The Gweilo meets up with food blogger Yuki to see what all the fuss is about – turns out it’s pretty weird. From noodles drenched in cheese sauce to meat from a can it’s all here in our latest episode of The Gweilo, our original video series where the whitest man alive discovers Asia.
