The BOAT TOUR of Our ALUMINUM MONOHULL - Rebuilt 1983 Trisalu 37 Aluminum Cutter (MJ Sailing Ep151)

This is the tour you have been waiting to see for over TWO YEARS now!!

If you have questions on anything we did not cover in the video, please leave a comment below and we'll do our best to get back to you on it.

Elements of Life is a 1983 Trisalu 37 aluminum cutter, that was build in Quebec. We purchased her in the fall of 2014, after she'd been sitting abandoned in a boat yard in Florida for over 10 years.

After sailing from the Azores, where we had been sitting when we bought her, we were able to see her for the first time in person in 2015, and moved her from storage to a work yard to begin a complete refit. Over the course of 2.5 years, we stripped this boat down to bare frames, and built her back out again, with the vision of her being the perfect cruising boat.

Everything in this boat, including the overhead, ceiling, floors, and all of the furniture, was built by the two of us. Fun bonus, we lived on the boat during the entire refit process.

She is currently set up as the perfect cruising boat for a couple, with a good sized galley, two main seating areas, a quarter berth (which we use for storage) and a murphy style bed for the v-berth which folds down into the forward salon as a queen size bed.

So far we have sailed her through the Caribbean, across the Atlantic Ocean, spent a wonderful 9 months with her in the Azores, and spent 2019 bringing her to the Arctic (via Norway) and down the coast of Scotland and England, where she is currently sitting.

Because we're looking to do another boat build, Elements of Life is now FOR SALE!!. If you have any interest in her, please follow this link to our website for her official listing.

Building a CUSTOM ALUMINUM MONOHULL (MJ Sailing - Ep 262)

We get front row seats to the building of Matt's dream monohull.
To get a 1 year supply of Vitamin D + 5 individual travel packs FREE with your first purchase, go to

We're revisiting our last few days in the Netherlands, after the METS Trade had wrapped up. We were lucky enough to score invites to 2 Dutch boat builders, both who do custom aluminum work.

Our first stop was to see the progress of Distant Shores IV - with future owners being Paul and Sheryl Shard. We see the progress of their Orion 49 thus far, and hear from Paul not only the reason they have chosen this boat, but how it is all coming together.

Next we make a stop at neighboring KM Yachtbuilders. A name that has been very familiar in our 'boat-hold' for the last 10 years, as they produce Matt's favorite monohull on earth - the Bestevear.

In our tour, we're able to see every stage of their builds - from framing, to interiors, to the finished product.

We had such a blast doing this tour - not only because we're in the middle of a boat build ourselves, but because six years ago we were in the middle of an aluminum boat rebuild. We can truly appreciate all the work that goes on in both of these yards, and we can't wait to see more of their finished products hit the water.

We hope you enjoy!

AGROUND in 2 Feet of Water - Let's Inspect the Bottom Paint! (MJ Sailing - Ep 160)

Does our boat do well drying out at low tide? We'll pretty much find out!!

We chose the spot we anchored in because we knew we could get in with a shallow draft, but what we were not expecting was for the tide to fall so low that we'd be sitting in 2 feet of water! But, since we had the opportunity, we used that time to inspect our bottom paint we applied last spring to see how it's held up over the past year without a single cleaning.

Using the beautiful sunny day we had, we took the dinghy, as well as Georgie, over to the neighboring island of St. Martin to enjoy their white sand beaches. Looking around, it was hard to tell we were sitting in a corner of England. It looked way too Caribbean to be so far north!

Lastly, we went to the posh island of Tresco to spend a few days. Beautiful hikes awaited us, and a secret little lookout over the sound and all the boats anchored there. Definitely an island group that is a little slice of paradise and we were pretty sure we could spend months there exploring it.

We hope you enjoy!

Much love from the Isles of Scilly!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

Entering The Inlet That Shipwrecked Us 8 Years Ago (MJ Sailing - Ep 176)

We start the morning by preparing ourselves to enter the St. Augustine Inlet, which back in 2012, left the three of us shipwrecked for three months when we went off course and ended up in breaking waves.

Finding Our Sister Ship; 2 of Only 6 IN THE WORLD!! (MJ Sailing - EP 54)

There have only been 6 of our boats made in the world, so imagine the surprise when we wake up in the morning and find out that our sister ship has anchored right next to us!

This channel is made possible by viewers like you. Please help us keep this channel creating great content by becoming a patron for as little as $1 an episode. Visit:

We get the chance to make our way over to Loiret, meet the owner, Phillipe, and tour what another version of our boat looked like. Even with the two being sisters, there were some major differences.

With all of our tasks in Florida completed, it was time to get back to the Bahamas! We made a 135 mile sail from Palm Beach to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands. The sail was comfortable and uneventful, and we tucked ourselves into a harbour just in time to wait out a strong northern coming through.

With our first full day in Great Harbour Cay, we walked around town to see what it had to offer, but since it was the weekend it was like the entire town was taking a siesta. We did manage to grab a few cold Kaliks at the liquor store, and happily wandered the streets to take in the town.

Cheers from the Bahamas!

THEY DRAGGED INTO US!! (MJ Sailing - EP 161)

There's a heavy North Atlantic storm blowing over us, and our neighbor's anchor chain wrapped right around ours!

We prepare ourselves for a restless night as we know a bad storm with sustained winds in the mid 30's and above will be blowing over us. But just as it's getting started, (around midnight, as always) we hear a bump-bump and realize our neighbor has dragged into us! They managed to get off without issue, but a few hours later a pan pan is put out and St. Mary's rescue boat heads into our anchorage to assist another boat in need.

36 hours later, after the storm has passed, it's time to head back to the mainland. We get the anchor up just after dawn, and leaving in some very sloppy seas, make our way to the Falmouth area. The start may have been a little rough, but the sights greeting us when we arrived are nothing short of heavenly.

We hope you enjoy!

Much love from the Isles of Scilly!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

Bahamas Bound (MJ Sailing - EP 41)

We didn't know how long we'd be stuck on the coast of Florida, but it turns out we were given a window to get to the Bahamas!

Getting to the Palm Beach Inlet took a full day of motoring from Stuart, full of the bascule bridges we would love to try and avoid if only we trusted the two inlets north of Palm Beach. And the weather window we had been rushing to get of course changed course on it.

A few extra days hanging around Palm Beach, and we were given the weather window we were looking for to get to the Bahamas. With nice 15 knot winds out of the south, we thought the crossing would be everything we'd planned for it to be, except the Gulf Stream had other plans in mind for us.

Cheers from the Bahamas!

We ESCAPED LOCKDOWN!! - Ready to Start Cruising Again (MJ Sailing - Ep 155)

First we thought we'd be leaving the marina at the beginning of April, but after COVID, that idea was pushed to mid-May. Well, while day sails were allowed, it wasn't until July 4th that cruising became permitted again and we were let out of lockdown to begin our season.

As we're released from our marina, we wanted to keep close and see all the sights of the Plymouth area that had been off limits to us as cruisers for the past few months. Heading up the Tamar River, we branched off into the Lynher River where we found a nice secure spot just before Dandy Hole to drop our anchor.

And although there is a lot to see by boat and by dinghy, before we could get too far away from Plymouth, we had our friend Alasdair (@bongo_sails) drive us into Dartmoor National Park for a hike around the reservoir. It was the perfect summer day in England, and walking through some of these trails, we could have sworn we were in a story book.

We hope you enjoy!

Much love from England!

Our BEST SAIL YET! We Can't Slow Her Down!! (MJ Sailing - Ep 157)

We wanted to work our way west along the coast of England, but when some good north winds came along, we chose to ride them 90 miles to the Isles of Scilly. There's a notorious spot called The Lizard, where if you time the tides wrong, you're looking at very built up and uncomfortable seas.

We left from Cawsand Bay around 2 pm, with the hopes of averaging 4.5 knots of speed, to put us at the Lizard around 1:30 am. Our only problem? Elements was having the sail of her life and DID NOT want to slow down! Shooting out of Plymouth Sound at 8 knots, we kept reefing and minimizing headsail, but there was no way we could get her down to that 4.5 knots we were aiming for.

We did end up getting to The Lizard about two hours early, but because we stayed 5 miles offshore, and had the wind and current coming from the same direction, it was a non issue. We were able to continue on and make it to the Isle of St. Agnus in the early morning.

So many great places to explore here, and we're so happy to have you along for the ride!

We hope you enjoy!

Much love from England!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

Tour our 1994 Beneteau 351. The Perfect Floating Cottage. Sailing trip to Toronto Canada plan.

Cruising Off Duty is back sailing in 2020 and we want to welcome you back on board as we explain our plan to leave this weekend to do a 2-3 week trip to Toronto and back. We will be leaving Kingston and going through the scenic Bay of Quinte then along the north shore of Lake Ontario to Toronto and back. We will be stopping at various towns along the way there and back and showing you all the beautiful views in upcoming episodes. So, be sure to subscribe to the Cruising Off Duty youtube channel so you don't miss it.

For this episode, we will take you on a tour of our 1994 Beneteau 351which we often refer to as the Perfect Floating Cottage. Is this boat something you could live on full time as you cruise around the Caribbean? Sure it is, but as you will see from our tour, we believe it would need some modifications to make it a comfortable full-time liveaboard home.

We plan to sail full time in a few years but we plan to upgrade to a Catamaran. So, Off Duty will remain as-is for us and will continue its perfect role as our comfortable summer cottage on the water.

We hope you enjoy the episode and if you are just thinking of getting into sailing and are looking for advice on what you would need in a boat to get your own perfect floating cottage feel free to send Craig an email with any questions at CruisingOffDuty@gmail.com. Craig will be happy to help steer you in the right direction.

Safe Cruising and stay healthy!
Craig & Janice.

What Do We Have To Do to Turn This Boat Into a Home? (MJ Sailing - Ep 173)

We're out at the Viking to take a close look at all of the things we'll need to complete before we can move aboard her as our temporary home.

In this week's episode, we're just about a week away from leaving Annapolis for the holidays, and are making one more trip out to 'Couch Dream' to asses a few of the things that will need to be finished before we can move aboard upon our return. We also start tearing apart the v-berth to get a better idea of the rot on the deck there, and take stock of everything that will need to be replaced.

Matt also takes a moment to talk about how we're doing on the hunt for boat builders insurance, and spoiler alert - it's still not looking good.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and just like you, we're eagerly awaiting the point where we can turn our attention to the catamaran as soon as the first container arrives!

We hope you enjoy!

Much love from Annapolis!

Organized Chaos - Ascending Neptune's Staircase l Sailing the Scottish Highlands (MJ Sailing - 116)

We're really excited to bring you this week's episode where we start our journey through the Caledonian Canal, and get to do more traveling through the Scottish Highlands.

We think our morning is going to begin by jumping right into the Lion's Den of Neptune's Staircase (an 8 lock staircase), but luckily there is a set of two just past Corpatch to get us familiar with the system. But..then we are thrown into the lion's den where I have quite a rough go of keeping our boat in place as we sit right in front of the flooding gate.

But...we're soon rewarded with a beautiful sail through Loch Lochy and picturesque green hills completely surrounding us. We hope you enjoy watching our trip through the canal as much as we enjoyed taking it!

Much love from Scotland!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

WE FOUND A BUILD SITE!! - A Quickie Real Time Update - MJ Sailing

We want to quickly bring you up to speed, so before we can catch our episodes up, here's a real time update with what's going on with us RIGHT NOW!

After selling Elements and leaving England, we flew back to the US to spend a little time with family before we began the search for what will be our catamaran build site for the next two years. We hadn't even begun the search yet, we were just in Annapolis visiting friends - but that friend found the perfect spot for us! Fast forward a few days, and we're getting ourselves set up to build inside a paint tent in Kentmoor Marina on Kent Island.

Funny how it all fell into place so quickly, but we could not be more happy about it!

Make sure to stay tuned next week when we revert back in time to our weekly episodes, where we just sold Elements and have a little time to spend in England before flying home to the US.

Much love from Maryland!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

Back In Our Element - But Without ELEMENTS!! (MJ Sailing - Ep 176)

As you know, we've been waiting quite some time for the new catamaran to arrive. So why not spend that time sailing?

When our friend Jeff asked if we'd like to spend a little time in sunny Florida, (and why not?, the snow had just arrived to Annapolis) we jumped at the chance to help him get his Catalina 36 further down the coast and into warm weather.

Since the Gulf Stream was pushing very close to the coast of Florida, and to a potential inlet point of Cape Canaveral, we planned to enter in St. Augustine. That would mean approximately 115 miles and 24 hours out in the open ocean. To make things even more fun, we had a buddy boat for the trip! Taylor and her mom, of @TaylorsTravels .

Join us for Part 1 of this journey, where we get back into our element - even if it is on someone else's boat. Sigh - I do miss that sound of wind and water surrounding us.

We hope you enjoy!!

Much love from the Atlantic!

50 Knot Winds, 18 Ft Tides & NO ROOM - Let the S#*T SHOW Begin!! (MJ Sailing - Ep 164)

S#*t is about to go down, and we've got a front row seat.
Support Production and get bonuses like early access to videos, private live chats, and bonus material by becoming a Patron!

After completing the bill of sale on our boat and spending a few days relaxing (and packing) while up the River Fal, we come back to town to wait out a nasty storm coming our way, only to find out the marinas are packed full. The only safe place we can now be....is the same spot we just came from.

Expecting 50 knot winds, and dealing with 18 ft tides, we let out 175 ft of chain right in the middle of the river (we had the harbour master's approval for this), since this was the only spot that would offer us enough swing room. But, as boats kept pouring in to find a secure spot, it was obvious that things were going to get tight.

Thankfully we did not encounter any issues through the night, but as we watched the boats around us, we found out they were not as lucky.

Much love from Cornwall!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

The Swells Are TOO BIG - Get Me OFF This BOAT!! (MJ Sailing - Ep. 162)

While in the Helford River, we knew that we were getting Elements scheduled for a survey in Falmouth, and if she sold, this would be our last time out fully enjoying the cruising life. No schedules, just bumming around with friends, and sitting around enjoying sunsets.

We take a stunning hike ashore in the afternoon where everything is SO GREEN that it almost feels unreal. When we get back to Elements, there are some bad swells rolling in due to the exposed nature of the anchorage, and so we happily take a few hours to get off the boat by having a bonfire ashore with our new friends on Polaris.

Going from glass calm our first night to rocking and rolling all over 48 hours later, I don't think it's the kind of tranquility either of us were expecting when we first arrived!

Much love from Cornwall!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

They're Taking Our Boat..... (MJ Sailing - Ep 163)

Get the family off the boat, because Falmouth Boat Company is coming to tow it away!!
Support Production and get bonuses like early access to videos, private live chats, and bonus material by becoming a Patron!

After a month off the grid, we head into the town of Falmouth, not only so we can fill our cupboards with food again, but because we need to get Elements ready for her survey.

It's the perfect motor in (no wind for sailing though, unfortunately) where we had sun, warmth, and even dolphins to greet us on our way! Once we had a slip secured though, it was time to get to work. Running ALL over town, we hunted through hardware stores, auto part stores, and chandleries to get all the little necessities to make Elements 100% ready for her survey.

When the big day came we weren't allowed to be there for the tonnage portion (COVID restrictions at the marina), so the three of us hung out at the harbour until it was time for the onboard survey. Which, lol, I did no filming of because I assumed the guy would not want a camera following him around as he worked. Darn it. Hindsight is 20/20, and I should have just asked. ;)

Well....I think you all know the outcome of how things went there!

Much love from Cornwall!
Jessica, Matt & Georgie

The DRY FITTING of Container #1 .... But, Where Is It? (MJ Sailing)

It's time to catch you up to why we haven't started the build yet - but, in good news, we get to show you everything that comes in container #1!

It's time to catch you up to why we haven't started the build yet - but, in good news, we get to show you everything that comes in container #1! The last we commented on it, the first container was going to arrive in late December, and we'd be starting the build as soon as we got our hands on it.

But as we learned during the refit of Elements, you always have to expect the unexpected. There have been delays which is going to stall us getting the first container until February. Make sure to stay tuned for this weeks' video for all the details on why! But the good news is, Max Cruise sent over a string of photos showing the dry fit of our boat, so you can see exactly what she'll look like once we put those first pieces together!

Enjoy!

Much love from Annapolis!

Sailing Travel Vlog | Best Of An Off Grid Lifestyle ⛵ Sailboat Living Ep. 34

The best part about living this sailing lifestyle on a catamaran is being connected with nature and wildlife! We have been living off grid on our sailboat for 10 months and this minimalist life on a boat never ceases to amaze us. In today's travel vlog we went snorkeling with sharks and exploring a stunning cave with hundreds of fish surrounding us. ☺ Support our production by giving this video a THUMBS UP & SUBSCRIBING ☺
