The BIGGEST FISH MARKET in GEORGIA!! Georgian Seafood + Market Tour | Batumi, Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:

After over a week of traveling around the Republic of Georgia, I finally made it to the final city on my whirlwind trip, Batumi! Come along with me as I try some local Georgian cuisine and check out the sites and culture of Batumi, Georgia!

Batumi is the second-largest city in Georgia and the capital of the Adjara region. It’s located on the Black Sea and is known for its gambling. In fact, its nickname is “The Las Vegas of the Black Sea!” It’s also famous for its unique Adjarian cuisine!

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My boy Tim from Friendly GE and I started our morning at Batumi Fish Market, the largest fish market in the country. It opens at 10 a.m. and sells fish from the Black Sea, nearby rivers, and fish farms.

Inside, the vendors were just starting to set up their catch. One woman we met was selling dorado fish, salmon, sturgeon, prawns, and oysters. We went with some wild Black Sea salmon for GEL 52/$17 USD. She gutted and cleaned it for us as well!

At another vendor, we saw shrimp, tiny octopus, dorada, sea bass, salmon, and more. There were so many options! I hadn’t seen the small octopus. We took 5 of them for GEL 10/$4 USD and 3 prawns for GEL 9/$4 USD.

Then, we got some Turkish coffee, which was thick and strong. Then, we bought 5 oysters for GEL 20/$7 USD. In total, we had only spent about $30 USD!

The fish market is next to the port area, and there are lots of restaurants nearby that will cook up your fish for you!

We headed to Blue Wave Restaurant, where they charge GEL 6/$2 USD per kilo you want them to cook. We gave them our fish and then we headed back into the kitchen to watch them prepare everything! To the salmon, they added oil, paprika, oregano, and more.

After 15 minutes, our seafood feast was ready! We got a table out on the pier by the water and dug in!

The wild grilled salmon was buttery and delicious but had some bones in it. I loved the oil, paprika, and oregano. There’s nothing like fresh fish!

Next were the grilled octopus, which was both weird and amazing. I loved the tentacles and the paprika-oregano-oil sauce on them. It was too good!

Then, we jumped on the oysters, which we added a splash of lemon to. They were nice and briny! Then, we took the shell and legs off the shrimp, which were fresh and succulent!

After eating with a fork, I just dug in with my hands. It was easier and the food was fantastic! I finished with one last oyster and a bit more salmon and then our wine arrived!

It was a MaNavi dry white wine from the Kakheti region. It was perfect with the seafood and the hot weather. What an amazing experience!

TBILISI, GEORGIA - I’ve been wanting to visit the country of Georgia for a very long time - the rich history, the landscapes and nature, and of course the ancient food! So today we’re going on an ultimate Georgian food tour in Tbilisi, the capital and largest city in Georgia. It’s going to be exciting and we’re going to eat a lot of delicious local food. Sit back and get ready for the ultimate Georgian food tour in Tbilisi!

A huge thank you Kristo from Culinary Backstreets for taking me on this Georgian food tour in Tbilisi. Culinary Backstreets offers tours in cities around the world and if you use my code “migrationology10” you can get a discount on booking food tours.

Here’s everything we did in this food tour today:

Retro ( - Tbilisi, Georgia - This first place we went is a restaurant called Retro to meet up with Chef Gia who is a legend for his kachapuri. Now there are thousand different types of kachapuri in Georgia, many variety of cheese and bread, but this specific version is the Adjarian version. The dough is made into a boat shape and filled with two types of cheese, baked and topped with eggs. It’s one of the world’s great cheese meal experiences. They have normal size, and we got the super sized Titanic kachapuri - 6 times the size of a normal one!

Dezerter Bazaar ( - One of the most interesting places to go in any city is the local market of bazaar to see the mix of ingredients and things that go into the cooking. Dezerter Bazaar is a great place to see the spices, herbs, and walnuts that make Georgian food what it is.

Tamtaki ( - Next we continued on to Tamtaki where Chef Tamta is taking classic Georgian food and making modern sandwiches out of them using top quality ingredients and everything served fresh. Her cooking is fantastic and the sandwiches were absolutely spectacular.

Sofia Melnikova’s Fantastic Douqan ( - No doubt this is a restaurant in Tbilisi with a lot of character set within a courtyard. Although they have a lot of dishes on their menu, we came specifically to eat fried chicken in garlic sauce, called shkmeruli.

Vino Underground ( - Being the birthplace of wine, we couldn’t do a Tbilisi food tour without stepping into a wine cellar for a few drinks!

Ezo ( - Finally to complete this meal, we had a giant supra meal - this is a full Georgian meal spread with appetizer, side dishes, and main courses, at Kristo’s very own restaurant! I fell in love with all the varieties and colors, and vegetables - all the walnuts and herbs used in the cooking. The highlight main dishes was a walnut stew and an herbal stew where the meat melted in your mouth.

What a day of Georgian food in Tbilisi, an incredibly fascinating and delicious city!

Again, thank you to Kristo and Culinary Backstreets for arranging - (code: migrationology10)

Georgian STREET FOOD MARKET Tour!! Exploring Gori + Ancient Cave City | Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:

My travels in the central part of the Republic of Georgia continued in the city of Gori. Join me as we try some local Georgian food and check out all the things you need to see and do in Gori, Georgia!

Gori dates back to the Hellenistic period and is located just an hour west of Tbilisi. It’s now the capital of the Shida Kartli region. It’s known for its famous fortress and has been a strategically important military location for centuries. It’s also the birthplace of the infamous Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My boy Tim from Friendly GE and I began our morning at Gori Fortress, a medieval citadel that dates back to ancient times. However, the current version of the fortress was reconstructed in the 18th century. It’s situated on a rocky hill high in the middle of the city.

Then, we drove through the old center of Gori, where there are lots of old homes and churches. I couldn’t wait to check out the bazaar. But first we stopped at the Joseph Stalin Museum, which is all about the brutal dictator of the USSR.

The museum contains his old home, his private train car that he traveled around the USSR in. His home is an ordinary village home, which they took apart and rebuilt here. It has a terrace and a cellar. He lived there from his birth in 1879 to 1883.

Gori Bazaar is a big flea market and produce market. It recently burned down, so they moved it by the bus station, about 20 minutes away. We found a bakery that sells lobiani and a sweet bread called kada. They gave us some kada for free!

I also got to see them make dough and bake bread. Then, I tried some lobiani, which contained bean filling. I loved the char on the outside and the spice! It had a nice kick to it!

They also gave us some tonis puri, which was fresh, crunchy, and hot out of the oven. The amount of fresh bread you’ll eat in Georgia is amazing!

Then, we found the new bazaar, which was covered. I could see vendors selling tools, fruit, and vegetables. It was a chilly Saturday morning, so there weren’t a lot of people there.

We me a woman shelling walnuts who let us try them. Walnuts can be found throughout Georgian cuisine! She gave me some wine and also sold dried chilies. The wine was young, almost like juice!

Next, we tried some sala, or pork belly, that was covered in spices. It was really spicy and contained red pepper. It was amazing!

Then, Tim and I headed to Uplistsikhe Cave Town, which was the largest city in Georgia in ancient times. It costs GEL 15/$5 USD to get in.

The cave city was destroyed by invaders and an earthquake, so much of it is in ruin. On the map at the entrance, you can see the main road, fortifications, main tower, and more.

Then, we went inside the cave dwellings, which looked out over the area. Because of the damage it sustained from the earthquake, parts of it are unstable and are held up by new pillars.

Uplistsikhe Cave Town was inhabited from before Christ, but its height was in the 12th century. It reminded me of Cappadocia!

The site is pockmarked with caves and ruined structures, as well as homes and wells. We saw Queen Tamar’s Hall, a mostly collapsed structure that belonged to a queen who became king in the 12th-13th century. We also saw her wine cellar and the remains of her qvevries.

We also saw the remains of the three-nave cathedral and hiked up to the very top to get views of the church and the area.

Georgian STREET FOOD at Telavi Bazaar - Market Tour + Cheese Factory | Telavi, Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:
???????? TSIVIS KVELI:

As my adventures in the Republic of Georgia continued, I hit up the town of Telavi to explore its culture and local sites. Come with me as I take you on a tour of the traditional market and cheese factory in Telavi, Georgia!

My boy Tim from Friendly GE and I kicked off our morning in Telavi, the capital of the Kakheti Wine Region. We started at Batonis Tsikhe, an 18th-century fortress whose name translates to The Lord’s Fortress. It was the residence of the kings of Kakheti when it was an independent kingdom.

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

From the top of one of the watchtowers, we had great views of the area. We got to see the southern and west gates, as well as an old, restored palace that now serves as a museum.

On the grounds is a 900-year-old Giant Plane Tree, which is one of the oldest in the region and stands in front of the statue of the king. There used to be a theater next to it! The tree has a massive hole in the trunk that you can go inside!

From there, we drove through town to the market. I could see colorful buildings and commercial spaces. There was a mix of mid- and low-rises. After we got out, we saw vendors selling clothing, fruit, farming tools, hats, and more.

Finally, we arrived at Telavi Bazaar, a huge covered bazaar where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and more. I could see apricots, peaches, and nectarines. I tried a juicy apricot, walnuts, and sour plums!

Next, we saw some vats of pickled joljoni, which were delicious. We also saw some fresh cheeses, including goat cheese and sulgini, as well as vendors selling churchkhela, which is nuts on a string covered in a hardened paste made from fruit syrup. It’s like a Georgian Snickers bar!

Churchkhela is the perfect snack to take into the mountains. They can be made with walnuts, hazelnuts and pomegranate juice, kiwi juice, and more! Then, we saw some dried persimmons and tried some plum and apple fruit leather. I loved them with the walnut!

Next, I tried honeycomb and walnuts covered in kiwi juice. The vendor was so nice and let me try everything! Further on were vendors selling tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers, peppers, and some incredible cheeses, smoked ham, and meat jelly.

Then, I sampled some Rkatsiteli amber wine, peach chacha, and an amazing honey chacha.

After that, we drove 5 minutes to Tsivis Kveli. “Kveli” means “cheese.” This cheese factory makes over 200 varieties! You can buy several, including gift packs!

Inside, I met George and Nick. We had to put on gowns and hairnets and go through a sanitation station to go through to the facility. They have vats of milk that are cultured and become cheese!

In the cellar, we saw where the cheese is aged on shelves. They have cheese aged in white and black wines, cheese with spices and herbs, and more! They have some with pepper, basil, mint, and many others!

I loved the smell in the cellar. They experiment with flavors and ingredients down there! Next, we saw how they check the acidity of the milk to make sure it’s good. Next, we saw the packaging center, where there was lots of string cheese and others waiting to be packaged.

They vacuum-seal the cheeses and then it was time to try some cheese! They gave me a cheese hat, and then we headed out into their beautiful garden. Scattered around it are clay pots and cannons.

Our cheese tasting menu included seven cheeses, bread, cucumbers, and wine. I loved the smoked roulette, which contained barberries and bacon, the smoked string cheese, and the incredible cheesecake balls the best! What an amazing lunch!

Georgian STREET FOOD in KUTAISI - Kebabs & Nazuki + Attractions | Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:

My whirlwind adventures through the Republic of Georgia continued in the beautiful city of Kutaisi in the western part of the country. Join me as I take you around to explore the food, sites, and culture of this amazing historical city!

Kutaisi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth. It dates back to at least the sixth and fifth centuries BC. Back then, it served as the capital of the Colchis, a historical region that hugged the eastern Black Sea coast. It’s believed that Kutaisi was the final destination of Jason and the Argonauts from the Greek epic “Argonautica!”

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

My friend and guide Tim from Friendly GE and I started in the town of Surami, which is roughly midway between Tbilisi and Kutaisi. Lots of people stop there on their road trips to buy sweet bread, which is sold by lots of women on the side of the road!

We stopped at a shop called Nazuki Sergo to get a sweet cinnamon bread called nazuki, which contains raisins! We hit the road again and passed into western Georgia, which is hilly and warmer than eastern Georgia.

There are two sides of Kutaisi: the old, historical part nestled between some hills, and the modern city built by the Soviets. It reminded me of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria.

In Tsentraluri Moedani Square is a large fountain that features replicas of ancient archaeological relics, and motifs of the Golden Fleece! It’s actually a tribute to the Kingdom of Colchis!

Nearby is the Meskhishvili Theatre and Kutaisi Park. The park is beautiful and full of fountains and sculptures.

Then, we passed the Kutaisi State Opera and Ballet Theatre, which looked a lot like the Sanctum from Doctor Strange! Kutaisi was the artistic capital of Georgia, so it’s famous for its artists, poets, and musicians.

Finally, we arrived at Bikentia’s Kebabery, which is basically a Georgian tavern that serves kebabs and beer. It’s very popular among locals and serves the best kebabs in town!

We ordered a battered and fried beef & pork kebab and two cold beers. The beer was so nice and refreshing. The kebabs came topped with a pile of onion and cilantro and came in a rich tomato sauce.

It was so delicious, meaty, and lightly fried, and the sauce was incredible. It was one of my favorite kebabs ever! I added some chili flakes to add a kick of heat. Best of all, these kebabs are the only thing on the menu, along with soda and beer!

They were so good I ordered some more and toasted with a fellow customer. Everyone there was so nice! And it’s cheap—three kebabs, bread, and beer will only cost you GEL 14/$5 USD!

From there, we walked one minute to the White Bridge, one of three historical bridges in the city. It crosses the Rioni River and has some beautiful designs and transparent panels in it. It also offers great views!

Then, we drove across the Chain Bridge to a rich neighborhood with great views over the historical center of the city. We arrived at Bagrati Cathedral, which was built in the 11th century and destroyed in the 17th century by the Ottomans. Reconstruction began in the mid-20th century and was complete in 2012.

You can see the old structure as well as an odd modern addition that doesn’t mesh with the old architecture. We saw the old pillars and then headed up the stairs to the bell tower. You can see the differences between the old and new parts of the cathedral inside!

Unfortunately, because of the new addition, the cathedral was removed from the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Outside, we saw a big iron cross standing in the grass and finally enjoyed some stunning views of Kutaisi!

Traditional GEORGIAN FOOD at GREEN BAZAAR - Oldest Market in Kutaisi | Georgia

???????? FRIENDLY GE:

As my day in the historical city of Kutaisi in the Republic of Georgia continued, I set out to explore its Green Bazaar! Come along with me as I try delicious Georgian street food and meet the locals at the Green Bazaar in Kutaisi, Georgia!

My boy Tim from Friendly GE and I began our morning just outside the Green Bazaar, the oldest and most authentic market in the city. It’s located in the center of the old town and is like a cross between a flea market and a farmer’s market. It’s a covered market full of vendors selling produce, vegetables, wine, home goods, and more!

???????? LEARN MORE ABOUT GEORGIA:
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

The vendors were starting to put out their produce. I met a friendly fruit vendor and his wife who sold watermelon, plums, and more. Then, inside, I saw just how expansive the market is. It’s divided into tons of sections.

One spice vendor let me try some Svaneti salt, which is herbs mixed with salt. It was super salty! Further on, we saw vendors selling lots of different types of beans, fruit, and vegetables. The woman gave us some Svaneti salt as a gift!

I could also see clothing vendors, cheese vendors, and butchers. I met one selling chilies, spring onions, lettuce, and herbs. There were more selling medicinal herbs, garlic, onions, and wine. It’s all produced locally in the foothills north of Kutaisi!

Then, we headed up to the more modern part of the market in a huge hall. I could see cheese, whole chicken, nuts, spices, pickles, and more. This area was redone recently!

At the cheese vendors, I tried some nadughi, or cottage cheese. It was fresh and crumbly! I also had some Imeruli cheese, which was dense with some nice air pockets. You can buy some big blocks of cheese for about $20 USD!

Next were more spices, including svaneti salt, which was less salty than the other. Then, I tried some spicy salt, followed by some smooth peach chacha and some insanely strong brandy! The woman gave me more salt as a gift! She also makes churchkhela at her home using walnuts, hazelnuts, and fruit juices!

We also saw a vendor selling lots of mushrooms and an entire section of whole, fresh chickens! She torched the chicken over a propane tank to remove the excess feathers!

At the butchers, we saw a man butchering some fresh meat and another chopping a cow leg. It’s a huge spectacle!

Next, we came across lots of pickled vegetables, including garlic, jonjoli, chilies, cabbages, and tomatoes! The pickled green tomato stuffed with herbs and spices was sour, herbal, and juicy. It was delicious, and the vendor gave it to me for free!

Then, we saw more fruits and nuts, including berries, peaches, apricots, red currants, and black currants! They let me try some red currants , black currants, and blueberries, which were so fresh and a little sour! The black currants tasted almost like blackberries.

We passed through the clothing section and home goods section. I was looking for some luggage to hold all the gifts I’d been given. Then, I bought a fish-shaped cutting board made of walnut wood for GEL 8, or less than $3 USD.

Finally, after seeing more tools, we found Bread & Wine Bistro, which makes fresh bread, lobiani, and khachapuri! They baked them in the tone oven.

The Imeruli khachapuri had a smoky flavor and was made with Imeruli cheese. It was so tasty. Then, we jumped on the lobiani, which is bread with bean filling. It was more pasty than others I’d had. The lobiani was very warm and fresh!

I chased it with some ice-cole water and some semi-sweet red wine at Bread & Wine Bistro for GEL 7.20/$3 USD. It was chilled and perfect after all the bread I ate!

Fishmarket in Batumi, Georgia????????

A little tour, to the fishmarket in Batumi, Georgia.

I was a northsea fisherman for 11 years myself, from the english canal to Lofoten, Norway and from Pentland Firth to area around Bornholm in winter season, in Baltic sea, so i love fish. I was cook 8 of the years and i made fish, every second day, because fresh fish are delicious, and to keep the expenses down. 1 day meat and 1 day fish. I never got tired of eating fish. Was trawling norwegian lobsters for 2 years, as well. I boiled fresh lobsters 5-6 o´clock morning, every day, for breakfast. Pure luxury.
But i wasn´t familiar with all of the fish, on this market, there was some new faces.
