Today we jump on a boat from San Pedro to Panajachel on the other side of the lake and explore the Atitlan Nature Reserve.
Set on the mountainside just outside Panajachel, the nature reserve boasts multiple trails into the wilderness where we saw the most amazing tropical birds, plants and also monkeys! The reserve also boasts an incredible butterfly house which has over a thousand beautiful butterflies.

The Atitlan Nature Reserve
One of our first adventures in Guatemala was the nearby Atitlán Nature Reserve. It was an adventure we will never forget!
The Reserva Natural Atitlán is a nature reserve and tourist attraction located just outside the town of Panajachel on Lake Atitlán. It is almost directly behind the iconic Torres, or the Riviera de Atitlán Hotel. The reserva is situated in a unique area of the lake It is located in a valley with a stream running through it. Because of the water the reserva sustains a diverse amount of lush plant life, that is less common around the rest of the lake where the mountain sides tend to be more dry.
Entrance to the reserve costs 70 quetzales per adult and 40 for kids and its open every day from 8 am to 5 pm. There are additional costs to do the reserves zipline courses. To get to the reserve from Panajachel just grab a tuk tuk and tell them you want to go to La Reserva.
The reserve has lots of activities, and interesting things to see including nature trails, suspension bridges, a private beach on the lake, a butterfly dome, monkeys and Coatis, and zipline courses. They also have cabins and places to camp. There is an auditorium for events and a cafe where you can get breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There are many miles of trails in the reserve winding in and out of the jungle and coming around each corner you never know quite what you'll find.

A Day In Panajachel at Reserva Natural Atitlan
During our 10 day stay in Tzununa we took a day trip to Panajachel and visited the natural reserve there that features a butterfly conservatory, ziplining, trails, access to swim in the lake, hotel rooms, a restaurant and many more fun activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve (Mirador & Diving) in San Marcos La Laguna | Ep. 67
In this episode, we are going to San Marcos La Laguna, another town on Lake Atitlan. To be specific, we are going to a nature reserve called Cerro Tzankujil which is a popular place for diving and has a wonder mirador.
Reaching there is not difficult because San Marcos is pretty small and it is an easy walk. It's a perfect weekend morning workout. Winter at the lake is quite chill. I'm happy to some sun to warm up my body. The entrance fee is Q15 ($2).
If you have lucky, you can see a mayan ceremony because there is a mayan altar.
San Marcos is a famous place for yoga and holistic therapies. You can customise your detoxification day by booking a session after the walk.

This is a compilation of videos from the Extremos and Ultra Extremos zip lines at the Lake Atitlán Reserve in Guatemala. All video was filmed with a GoPro Hero 3 White Edition. The Song is Fast Lane by The Eagles.
Canopy and Hanging Bridges at Atitlan Nature Reserve in Guatemala
A couple of nature trails, a butterfly garden, and botanical gardens are the offerings at this reserve. The trails pass through some areas of dense forest, and feature a few high-hanging bridges to get you up into the canopy. You'll certainly see a range of tropical bird species, and if you're lucky you may see a monkey or two. There's also a zip-line canopy tour here, featuring eight different cables. The longest of these cables is 320m (1,050 ft.). The reserve has a visitor center, restaurant, and small section of private beach.

While here we spent a day checking out the Atitlan Nature Reserve - admiring the butterflies, hiking some of the trails, admiring the lake and partaking in some zip lining!
