San José, Costa Rica - Welcome to San José, the capital and biggest city in Costa Rica, and one of the best places to eat Costa Rican food. Today we’re going on an ultimate Costa Rica street food tour, from the market to local restaurants and everything in between. Let’s go eat!

First of all a huge thank you to:
- Yeison and Samantha, follow them @mytanfeet
- Alex and Roberto from Chepe Cletas Tours
For taking me on this unforgettable Costa Rican food tour.

Mercado Central de San José (San José Central Market) - We’re beginning this tour at the central market in San Jose, the best place to take in the sights, sounds and ingredients of Costa Rica. Soda Tala, San José Central Market ( is without a doubt one of the city’s best stalls, known for their Gallo Pinto (Rice and beans) - the national dish of Costa Rica. We also tried Marisquería Brigitte for their Cadosas (Ceviche with Picaritas chips), which is something else you don’t want to miss. Finally, La Sorbetera de Lolo Mora is a perfect sweet finish to any market tour in San Jose.

Super Cholo Gigante at Super Cholo Gigante, San José Meat Market - After walking around the market, we then headed to the Meat Market and in the back there’s a restaurant that specializes in bocas, or small places of food. Here you can get all the classic Costa Rican foods, authentic and cooked to perfection.

Empanadas at La Empanadota - You can’t come to Costa Rica without trying an empanada and everyone seems to have their favorite. When they are deep fried hot and fresh and drizzled in five sticky sauces, they are hard to resist.

Next up with tried Costa Rican Coffee at Café La Mancha ( and it was the perfect afternoon boost.

And finally we tried some unique Ice cream at the famous Corazón Contento Pastelería, San José, Costa Rica (

Again, thank you to Yeison and Samantha from My Tan Feet, and Alex and Roberto from Chepe Cletas Tours for taking me around San Jose, Costa Rica!

Best Things to do in San Jose Costa Rica | January-2024

Top things to do in San Jose, Costa Rica. Best things to do in San Jose Costa Rica. San Jose Costa Rica 2024

Walk Central Avenue
================
Central Avenue is San Jose’s downtown, and the road goes straight through it. It’s an excellent starting point to see downtown and to also visit the various places of interest like museums around.

If you go around 4-5 PM, you’ll see all the locals getting off work and it’s fun to people watch. Walking through Central Avenue is one of the best things to do in San Jose, Costa Rica because you get to experience and see typical city Costa Rican life.

The Costa Rica national theater
==========================
It is the cultural and architectural gem of Costa Rica. Take a tour to learn about the theater and see the stunning architecture. Modelled after the Paris Opera House, the National Theater in San José’s Catedral district is a neo-classical masterpiece representing Costa Rica’s greatest era of extravagance and sophistication. The historic building has been the epicenter of the city’s fine arts scene including opera, symphony, and other performing arts since its inaugural performance by Fausto de Gounod in 1897.

The San Jose Central Market
=======================
It is a must visit in San Jose. I love the atmosphere of local markets! It’s fun to watch the locals go about their daily life. In the market, you can try traditional food and do some Costa Rican souvenir shopping. Vendor stalls selling everything from coffee beans to cowboy boots give visitors to Central Market a taste of real Costa Rican culture.

You can spend about an hour wandering through the stalls as the market is not that big. I Highly recommend eating breakfast or lunch there to try traditional Costa Rican food.

San Jose has several small but superb museums to learn about the history of Costa Rica.

Gold Museum
===========
This museum has a large collection of Pre-Colombian gold dating back to AD 500. Housed in a historic building and managed by the Central Bank of Costa Rica, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum holds one of the largest collections of gold artifacts in Latin America. In total, the museum holds more than 1,600 pre-Columbian items, including Costa Rica’s very first coin, handmade ceramics, jewelry, and religious icons dating from 500 AD to 1500 AD.

National Museum
===============
Formerly a fortress, this museum is one of the most important places in Costa Rica since it’s where former president Jose Figueres Ferrer abolished the army in 1948. Housed in the barracks of the Bellavista Fortress, the National Museum (Museo Nacional), displays indigenous and pre-Columbian artifacts, religious artwork, and geological and archaeological pieces linked to Costa Rica’s rich and colorful history since 1950. Separate rooms explore ancient cultures dating back some 12,000 years, as well as collections of ornate jewelry, medallions, and gold statues.
