Stopping these common travel mistakes can make for more enjoyable travel experiences, save cost, reduce frustration and enable some amazing experiences around the world. We hope you find these tips for traveling abroad helpful in planning your own trip.
▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.
We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.
We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. 10 BIGGEST Travel Mistakes NOT To Make!
Nothing beats an exciting journey abroad. Exciting sights, sounds, and people await you, but if you don’t plan appropriately, then you may end up with a sour experience instead. So check out these top ten travel mistakes to avoid on your next adventure.
1. Don't Arrive Without Currency
In many areas, very few shops accept debit cards. Whether you want to take a cab across town or grab a quick drink, it pays to have some extra local currency on hand. Airport currency kiosks can be a bit of a ripoff, so try exchanging money at your bank before you leave.
2. Don't Go Over Budget
You should always assume that everything will cost more than it actually does. Unless you’ve already paid for something, it’s a good idea to assume that goods or services will cost about 20 percent more than you expect.
3. Secure Your Belongings
Losing your personal belongings and filing a police report are unpleasant experiences that can easily overshadow all of the holiday fun. There are pickpockets in every country, so you should always keep your wallet in your front pocket, and keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
4. Don't Be Taboo
Every country has its own standards and while many locals will probably be somewhat understanding of a cultural faux pas, it’s best to do your research and be as sensitive as possible to avoid offending anyone.
5. Don't Squeeze It In
It’s tempting to try to squeeze as much as you possibly can into your trip, but if you’re only spending a small sliver of time at every attraction, then you won’t truly get to enjoy anything. So give yourself a little breathing room on the itinerary.
6. Don't Pack Too Much
You’re not moving; you’re traveling. Too much luggage will weigh you down, and the more you bring, the more you stand to lose. Try to only pack items that you’re sure you’ll actually use.
7. Don't Forget Travel Visas
Even if you have a strong passport, many countries will still require you to apply for a visa before allowing you to enter. Some countries can take up to 8 months to provide this, so check now!
8. Don't Forget to Notify Your Bank
If you forget to let your bank know about your travels, then their system will automatically flag a foreign transaction, and you’ll end up with a declined card. Not only is that super embarrassing, but contacting your bank to rectify, while you’re abroad can be a huge hassle.
9. Don't Go Roaming
If you think that your cell phone bill is high now, then just wait until you get a few international roaming charges. Seriously, you could end up paying hundreds of dollars. To avoid roaming charges, you can set your phone to airplane mode, buy an international data plan, or buy a local SIM card at your destination. Of course, make sure that your phone is SIM-unlocked first.
10. Don't Forget To Have Fun!
Whether you’re going abroad for leisure or business, you have so many exciting opportunities ahead of you. If you don’t make the most of your trip, then you’re going to regret it later on, so make sure to get your fill of the local cuisine, and try to enjoy everything that your destination has to offer.
