Backpacking PATAGONIA, Part 1: Torres del Paine O Trek

I had planned to hike the O-circuit of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile in early 2020...and then that happened. The following year (2021)...same problem. The following year (2022)...same problem! Fortunately, I did get to Bolivia that year (

But then in 2023...FINALLY...the one, the only...TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK!

I also convinced my friend Chad to join me on this adventure (since he really didn't get to enjoy the Pyrenees after getting deathly sick and having to bail out on the fifth day (

#torresdelpaine #O-circuit #chile #patagonia #backpacking #adventuretravel

How to Plan Your Own Torres del Paine Backpacking Trip:
If you have the patience and diligence, you can save $100's (if not $1000's) by planning your own unguided hike. To build your own Torres del Paine itinerary, follow the link below, scroll down a bit, and then click Personalized: Build Your Own Itinerary:

CAUTION: Always go into any hike with the knowledge, experience, and fitness level to give you enough margin to finish the hike safely.

The most difficult part of this trek can be finding campsite or refuge availability, particularly in peak season, so start many months ahead of time and/or aim for the end of their summer (Jan - Feb). Another advantage to hitting this park later in the season is that snow in the passes will be melted out; however, late summer or early fall (in the southern hemisphere) could bring more rain and storms, so be prepared.

The campsites, refuges and dinners in Torres del Paine National Park can be expensive, but the cost can reasonable by tenting and bringing your own food. Even so, don't be afraid to treat yourself. Plan on spending at least a couple nights in a refuge to dry out and shower, just in case the weather is cold and wet. Nine days in a tent in bad weather can really suck! In addition, dinners are a great way to meet people, and Chad and I met some really cool people along this trip.

The most expensive part of this trip is definitely the airfare. I recommend flying into Santiago, maybe staying a day to explore the city, and then flying direct on LATAM to Puerto Natales. The bus from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine National Park will take a few hours, including the transfer station just outside the park. If you can't find flights to Puerto Natales, you'll be stuck flying into Punta Arenas, which is a much longer bus ride and pretty much forces you to spend a night at the entrance to the park (or maybe hike into the evening to reach Seron).

On the trail, the park service forces you to progress camp-by-camp along the north side of the park. This can be frustrating for those of us who like to hike 20 miles a day, but it was actually great to spend day after day with the same great people!

HIKING THE O TREK IN PATAGONIA (UNGUIDED) // CHILE TRAVEL VLOG

What is the O Circuit, or the O Trek? Well, it's a 120(ish) kilometer trek through what is arguably the most beautiful part of Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park. The O Trek got its name for the shape of the route which includes the commonly-known W-trek (we explain it better in the video). Over 10 days we hiked the O Trek while carrying all of our own gear and food, and this video tells the story of what that was like. It includes epic views, lots of blisters, new friends, many mice encounters, warm food on cold days, a lot of pain, a lot of joy, and some serious determination.

Whether you have stumbled upon this video because you are looking into hiking the o trek or w trek, or you simply want to see what it takes to trek for 10 days in Patagonia, we are glad to have you! We had an incredible time braving the 100km winds to see grey glacier and pushing ourselves to our limits to make it to Los Torres before the rain came. We had so many highs and lows during this trip and hope you enjoy watching!

Solo Hiking 150 kilometers in Patagonia: O Trek Torres del Paine

Solo hiking the O Trek/ O Circuit in Torres del Paine was one of the most amazing backpacking trips I have ever been on! And don't let anyone fool you, there are plenty of other people on trail so you won't be solo hiking that much and you are guaranteed to make a ton of new friends along the way. I met people from all over the world as well as many new Chilean friends who are very proud of the Los Torres del Paine National Park. #torresdelpaine #besthikingpatagonia #otrek

I chose the 8-day hike and booked it directly with Los Torres and let them take care of everything. The trail is only supposed to be 75 miles or 120 kilometers but in total, you will hike much more than that.

Day 7: Refugio Los Cuernos - Refugio Chileno - Base Las Torres
Day 8: Refugio Chileno - Base Las Torres - Welcoming Center

Most people stay the first night at Seron. I recommend that you skip it and hike to Dickson on the first day and spend more time in the other sections as the trailhead to Seron is the least interesting section. However, you need to be comfortable hiking 20 miles a day to do so.
I made the Campsite/Refugio reservations with some buffer time to hike Valle del Francés and Base Las Torres twice in case of the bad the weather.
It worked well for Valle del Francés. I didn't see anything when I first hiked Valle del Francés as it rained. The clouds cleared up next day and I could see amazing views.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for Base Las Torres. Although I hiked to the Base Las Torres twice and stayed there for 4 hours, I didn't have luck to see the clear view of the Towers. I couldn't wait there forever as the trail to the Base Las Torres was closed at 2pm from Refugio Chileno and the rangers came up to Base Las Torre and asked the hikers to go down at 4pm.
I recommend that you allow yourself plenty of time as the weather is unpredictable.

Torres del Paine - The O circuit - part 1

After driving along Ruta de la fin del mundo, Tommaso and I set off on an expedition in one of the most scenographic natural parks of South America - Parque Nacional Torres del Paine.
My Instagram followers challenged me to embark on a 130 km path also known as O circuit- despite being long and challenging, it was breathtaking at the same time. Seven days of vivid colours, wildlife and strenuous hikes, allowed us to document the beauty of the patagonian fall resulting in an incredible once in a lifetime expedition.

Trekking the O Circuit in TORRES DEL PAINE

We took on the full 8-day O Circuit of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, carrying all our own camping gear and food for the entire 135km. This is by far one of Patagonia's most amazing treks.

The first four days we hit the backside of the park, staying at Camp Seron, Camp Dickson, Camp Los Perros and finishing up at Camp Paso. We crossed rivers, climbed mountains, spotted glaciers and wandered through beautiful forests.
