Thar: The Incredible Living Desert | Deserts And Life

Deserts are on the move with the shifting winds and changing climate.
They are the most haunting of all the Earth’s landscapes. Sometimes we think of them as vast empty spaces that dwarf and test our human spirit. But that view is wrong in so many ways.
Deserts are full of colour and contrast. There are mountains and lagoons among the dunes and plains. They often teem with life and are rich in resources. Their peoples have remarkable qualities of ingenuity and endurance, wisdom and humour – their festivals and gatherings full of colour and energy.

UNDERSTANDING THAR DESERT | TRICKY TRAVELLERS

One of the most radiant and dynamic states of India, with a dazzling mix of culture, history, music, food, and individuals inviting you with happy smiling faces, becoming hopelessly enamored with Rajasthan doesn't take a lot of time. It's an arrangement of deserts, palaces & forts. Rajasthan has more history than the whole nation put together. It is the territory of past Maharajas and their luxurious palaces, and glorious forts. Rajasthan is infused with a past filled to the peak with respect, bravery, and chivalry.

Rajasthan separates out itself with its astonishing differentiation of shades, appearance, and materials. Rajasthan's liking for craftsmanship and culture comes from the antiquated age when Kings used to rule. Rajasthan is broadly respected for its folklore and conventional art forms that go back hundreds of years.

Thar desert is one of the major hot deserts of the world with the highest population density. Many people living in this desert are subsistence farmers but with increasing development opportunities, the human population is also growing. Due to population pressures, this environment is increasingly under threat.

Camel with His Owner Thar Desert | The Royal Rajasthan Tourism

India’s Thar Desert has long been identified with a barren place and a layman would barely consider visiting this part of India. Yet, despite its oddity, there are some facts about the Thar Desert that might urge you to venture into its territory.
The Great Indian Thar Desert is the 18th largest subtropical desert land and also one of the most populated ones. It is said that about 40 per cent of the human population in Rajasthan lives in Thar Desert. It extends from Sutlej river and is enclosed by the Great Rann of Kutch, the Aravalli Mountains and the Indus River.
There are several places in Rajasthan where you can go for Camel Safari, and the best ones include Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Pushkar, and Jodhpur. Each of these places offer a unique and memorable experience.

Jaisalmer, the Golden City as it is often dubbed, is located in the heart of the Thar desert. Riding on a camelback through the rolling sand dunes of the Thar desert is an experience like no other. Also, about 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) west of Jaisalmer lies another best locale — the Sam Sand Dunes, which are characterized by tall sand dunes (about 30-60 meters) and almost no vegetation. This is the most popular place for safari, which makes it the most crowded as well. Nonetheless, camel safari here is fun! You can disembark at various points along the way and camp through the spectacular dunes.
Those who prefer to enjoy the desert landscape in peace and quiet may head to the dunes near Khuri village. These are lesser-known but most stunning sand dunes around Jaisalmer. While riding a camel here, you can experience the rustic desert life up-close, as the village is home to mud and straw huts and the village folks prefer living the traditional way.

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is an arid region in the north-western part of the Indian subcontinent that covers an area of two lakh square kilometers and forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan. About 85% of the Thar Desert is in India, and about 15% is in Pakistan. The Thar Desert is about 4.56% of the total geographical area of India. More than 60% of the desert lies in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The portion in India also extends into Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. The portion in Pakistan extends into the provinces of Sindh and Punjab.

Tour-de-Thar - The Journey

In the journey of eight years Tour-de-Thar has evolved a lot, from a motor cycle tour to a perfect showcase of the region. Tour-de-Thar as the name suggests the expedition traverses the Thar desert consisting regions Marwar (Jodhpur) Bhati Patti (Jaisalmer), Jangladesh (Bikaner) and Malani (Barmer) on the Indian side and Sindh on Pakistani side majorly. The Thar Desert is the most widely populated desert in the world, it has a population density of 80 + humans per square kilometre.

Tour-de-Thar has become the best experience of Thar, showcasing culture, heritage, architecture, folk, craft, art, food, history and stories of the land. Million star accommodation, bonfire and cooking in the wild and folk artists singing on the dunes with the sunrise is magical.

A colourful culture rich in tradition prevails in this desert. The people have a great passion for folk music and folk poetry, artists have given words to every moment and object of importance in life, may it be Gorandh (woven decoration for camel) or kaangasiyo (comb) Kurjan (bird. Demoiselle Crane) or Kallali (Liqour Poducers) or ekali ( virah or loneliness). Every occasion has a song for it.

The desert has a rich multifaceted culture, heritage, traditions, folk tales, dances and music due to its inhabitants who belong to different religions, sects and castes. The architecture is beautiful and scientific and an aspect of study for making the desert habitable though the weather conditions are very inhospitable. Bawris and Tankas which are now referred as water harvesting and storage structures, are so magnificently built, have made life sustainable in the Thar.

The Forts, Palaces, Havelis or small houses are architectural wonders, they were so scientifically built which made thriving possible. Thar houses one of the five largest forts of the world, the mighty Kila Mayurdhwaj (Mehrangarh, Jodhpur), one of the few living forts of world which also is one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan call Sonar Kila (Jaisalmer Fort), Havelis of Shekhawati are so magnificently painted that you can call whole of Shekhawati an open air art gallery.

Canals we think of to be a modern day technology but is an age old practice. Maharaja Ganga Singh Bikaner built a maze of canals. To commission and complete the project he left no stone unturned and went to the extent of emptying the state treasury. For his efforts to bring water to the dry lands he was called “BHAGIRATH”, as per the folk lore Bhagirath was the who crafted the way for Ganges to the plains.

Thar is also referred to as land of valour and romance. Tales of Heroes are sung and they are celebrated and revered upon. One of such occasions; Sher Shah Suri said after a battle with Marwar, “I would have lost sultanate of Hindustan for a handful of millet”. This very statement gives you an essence of valour of people of Thar. As far as romance is concerned, if you have not read Mumal-Mahendra you have not read romance.

With the wars between India and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971 population exchanges took place in the Thar, from the Indian section of the Thar to Pakistani Thar and from Pakistani Thar to the Indian section of the Thar, and alongside happened the exchange of craft, culture and food. People coming over from the other side settled along the border and brought beautiful craft of Sindhi Kadhai which is now available to all from the boutiques all over. Food of Thar gets people drooling over. The food is often spicy and rich in fat, may it be Daal Baati Churma or Laal Maans.

The above text is the observation and understanding summed up after years of journeys and travels through and across The Great Indian Desert of Thar. The modern days have brought the wide open and fast highways but the life and culture thrives on the backroads, here you can feel the vastness and expanse of the Thar. The routes taken are untouched from the commercial tourism where you are away from the modern world experiencing the true nature of Thar in its complete rawness. The experience is designed so that no one feels left behind and you can bring any family car, a small hatchback, SUV’s or cruiser bikes to big Adventure Bikes.

Tour-de-Thar Desert on Camel back, Rajasthan

Desert safaris on camels have become increasingly popular around Jaisalmer. Domestic and international tourists frequent the desert seeking adventure on camels for anything from a day to several days. This ecotourism industry ranges from cheaper backpacker treks to plush Arabian night style campsites replete with banquets and cultural performances. During the treks tourists are able to view the fragile and beautiful ecosystem of the Thar desert. This form of tourism provides income to many operators and camel owners in Jaisalmer as well as employment for many camel trekers in the desert villages nearby.

Thar Desert provides the recreational value in terms of desert festivals organized every year. Rajasthan desert festivals are celebrated with great zest and zeal. This festival is held once a year during winters. Dressed in brilliantly hued costumes, the people of the desert dance and sing haunting ballads of valor, romance and tragedy. The fair has snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats and folk performers. Camels, of course, play a stellar role in this festival, where the rich and colorful folk culture of Rajasthan can be seen.

Camels are an integral part of the desert life and the camel events during the Desert Festival confirm this fact. Special efforts go into dressing the animal for entering the spectacular competition of the best-dressed camel. Other interesting competitions on the fringes are the moustache and turban tying competitions, which not only demonstrate a glorious tradition but also inspire its preservation. Both the turban and the moustache have been centuries old symbols of honor in Rajasthan. Evenings are meant for the main shows of music and dance. Continuing till late into the night, the number of spectators swells up each night and the grand finale, on the full moon night, takes place by silvery sand dunes.

The Thar Desert also known as the Great Indian Desert is a large, arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent and forms a natural boundary running along the border between India and Pakistan. With an area of more than 200,000 km2 (77,000 sq mi), it is the world's 18th largest subtropical desert. Thar Desert extends from the Sutlej River, surrounded by the Aravalli Ranges on the east, on the south by the salt marsh known as the Great Rann of Kutch (parts of which are sometimes included in the Thar), and on the west by the Indus River. Its boundary to the large thorny steppe to the north is ill-defined. It lies mostly in the Indian State of Rajasthan, and extends into the southern portion of Haryana and Punjab states and into northern Gujarat state.

In Pakistan, the desert covers eastern Sindh Province and the southeastern portion of Punjab Province, where it joins the Cholistan Desert near Bahawalpur. The Tharparkar District is one of the major parts of the desert area. Tharparkar consists of two words: Thar means 'desert' while Parkar stands for 'the other side'. The Thar Desert slopes imperceptibly towards the Indus Plain and surface unevenness is mainly due to sand dunes. The dunes in the south are higher, rising sometimes to 152 m whereas in the north they are lower and rise to 16 m above the ground level. The Aravalli forms the main landmark to the south-east of Thar Desert. The soils of the Arid Zone are generally sandy to sandy-loam in texture. The consistency and depth vary according to the topographical features. The low-lying loams are heavier and may have a hard pan. Some of these soils contain a high percentage of soluble salts in the lower horizons, turning water in the wells poisonous.

Stretches of sand in the desert are interspersed by hillocks and sandy and gravel plains. Due to the diversified habitat and ecosystem, the vegetation, human culture and animal life in this arid region is very rich in contrast to the other deserts of the world. The Thar is one of most heavily populated desert areas in the world and the main occupations of people living here are agriculture and animal husbandry.
