WHAT TO PACK FOR LONG TERM TRAVEL (carry-on only) | Regrets + Free Packing List

In this video we show you what to pack for long-term travel and include a packing list for travel in 2024! There are lots of packing videos out there, so why should you watch this one? Well, we left for full-time travel in March 2021 with only carry-on bags, and we have learned so much about packing in our first year of full-time travel. We have jam packed this video with as many useful tips and words of wisdom to help you prepare for your trip, whether it be a two week city-hopping-holiday or a one-way-trip-with-no-end-date kind of adventure!

We broke this video into three sections to make it easy for you to watch/listen to the part(s) that are most relevant to you. Part 1 covers what we pack, part 2 talks about our biggest packing lessons learned, and part 3 is how we pack for long term travel!

In the video you will learn that as we begin our second year of full-time travel we have purchased bigger backpacks that are no longer carry-on size! We explain why we are making this change in the video and hope it helps you decide if carry-on or check-in luggage is the right decision for you.

If you are packing for a backpacking trip around South America, or leaving to start your journey as a digital nomad, we think you will find lots of good information here! For example, we have developed some strong feelings about merino wool since leaving to travel full-time and we hope our real-life experience helps you make better decisions about clothing than we did when we started ????

STORM FORCE @ CAPE HORN [Ep. 108]

This is it! These are the conditions we sought to test us. We encounter FORCE 10 48+ knot wind gusts and heavy seas as we sail around Cape Horn to starboard. This is scary sailing, on the edge, and it is not for the faint of heart. You may get seasick. Don't try this at home!

#sailing #adventure #epic

This is the sailing we know you wanted to see when you subscribed.

You wanted to see if we were tough enough.

You wanted to see if we could make it.

You wanted to see a great adventure and sailing in extreme conditions.

We went looking for these conditions as we felt that choosing a calm weather window to round Cape Horn would be, well, disappointing, not to you, but to us. It would not be the challenge we were looking for.

We wanted to summit the Mt. Everest. Somehow, climbing that mountain on a sunny warm day with no wind and waves felt like selling ourselves short. We wanted huge waves. We wanted gale force winds. We wanted freezing cold temps.

Some may say seeking out these conditions is unsafe, or risky. Those people are not 100% wrong, but we say those people are living in fear. Don't be afraid! To experience true freedom is to live life without fear.

That being said, do not go sailing in these conditions without being well prepared and able to self rescue, do not put your life, your sailboat, and the lives of sea rescue personnel are at risk. We are both very experienced sailors and have sailed countless miles in harsh conditions while racing, solo sailing, and doublehanded sailing to prepare for this type of sailing.

Now enjoy a sailing video that we had lots of fun making. Click subscribe and come along for this awesome rollercoaster ride of an extreme sailing day!

11 Billion Tons of Ice Melted (TODAY IN GREENLAND)

IT'S REALLY HOT IN GREENLAND RIGHT NOW... Like 15 degrees Celsius or 60 Fahrenheit. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

Today alone, Greenland's ice sheet (the second largest on earth) lost a record 11 billion tons, which rose global ocean levels half a millimeter.

It was bizarre to witness this first hand, as our Hurtigruten expedition explored the sea ice on small tender boats.

No region on earth is more affected more by climate change than the polar regions, and you don't realize how big the issue is until you see it with your own eyes. I made this video to raise awareness because it's up to us to fix it. I am speechless by what I saw today.

Please share your thoughts, comments and suggestions on climate change. I want to get some discussion going about what is happening right now on our lovely planet.

Conversations | Confronting Climate Change Denial

As the writer David Wallace-Wells outlines in The Uninhabitable Earth: A Story of the Future, the catastrophic consequences of climate change are 'worse, much worse than you think'. Yet, in the US in particular, there remains a powerful constituency that denies human-driven climate change is even occurring. How best to confront such fallacious views, and what does this means for an art market defined by high consumption?

Conservation Conversations: Prof Andrew McKechnie-Facing the furnace:global heating impacts on birds

On Tuesday, 8 June 2021 at 19:00 (SAST), BirdLife South Africa's weekly webinar series Conservation Conversations with BirdLife South Africa hosted Prof. Andrew McKechnie, who is a Professor at the University of Pretoria and South African Research Chair in Conservation Physiology at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

Desert birds eke out an existence in some of the most inhospitable habitats on Earth, surviving and breeding in places where extreme temperatures are combined with scarce and unpredictable water and food resources. Under these conditions even small increases in temperature can have profound consequences, making the future of arid-zone birds an uncertain one on our rapidly-heating planet. In this presentation, Professor Andrew McKechnie of the University of Pretoria and South African National Biodiversity Institute will provide an overview of the work of the Hot Birds Research Project, a team of ornithologists studying the ways in which rising temperatures are impacting the avian biodiversity of arid regions. The talk will focus on birds inhabiting the deserts of southern Africa but will also include the arid zones of North America and Australia.

Climate Risk for Councils Workshop

Tuesday 16 October, 2018

Councils now face unprecedented legal liabilities and financial risks if they fail to address obligations arising from climate change. Those who fail to mitigate, adapt to or disclose climate risks in their governance and decision-making will expose themselves to legal liabilities – including potentially breaching fiduciary duties. With climate risks now occupying the minds of mainstream investors, those not addressing climate risks will increasingly struggle to access affordable finance and insurance.

On Tuesday 16 October, Resilient South and Resilient Hills & Coasts collaborated to host a series of workshops to understand the legal and financial implications of climate change for councils in South Australia.

SPEAKERS
Nina Keath – Introduction (0:00 – 5:45 mins)
Senior Strategic Planner, City of Onkparinga – EMCEE

Sarah Barker – Legal and Financial Risks from Climate Change (5:46 – 33:48 mins)
Special Counsel, Minter Ellison – internationally renowned expert on climate change governance risk.

John Nairn – How our climate is changing (33:49 – 43:14)
South Australian State Director of the Bureau of Meteorology – widely regarded expert on weather-related climate risks, with a focus on heatwaves.

Mark Siebentritt – Current Climate Action by Councils (43:15 – 54:55 mins)
Consultant, Seed Consulting Services – local consultant specialising in water and climate change, and has taken part in almost all climate planning projects in South Australia to date.

Donovan Burton – Governance for Managing Climate Risk (54:56 – 1:27:06 mins)
Consultant, Climate Planning – internationally respected climate adaptation planner, who created the Informed.City platform to assess climate governance for local and state governments across Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

AF22 Climate Crisis and the Arts: Creative Responses to the Climate Crisis

Climate Crisis and the Arts: Creative Responses to the Climate Crisis
With Ali Gumillya Baker, Tamara Baillie, David Finnigan and Caitlin Ellen Moore. Moderated by Matthew Wright-Simon.

Fri 11 Mar | West Stage, Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden
Adelaide Festival 2022

Art is a response to the world – a cathartic release of emotion or a way to engage with confronting issues. The climate crisis is one of the largest global challenges of our time, seeing creative responses from artists, musicians, producers and theatre-makers all over the world. Many of these artistic expressions reflect the sadness, fear and outrage that accompanies this issue. But creativity can also be a tool for communication and meaningful conversation about climate action and sustainability. Our panellists will share their insights into creative climate responses and seek to champion current initiatives within the cultural sector. By bringing more people into the conversation and creating a space where people can share their concerns and reflections, this panel will offer new avenues for effective action and ideas that inspire creative engagement with the climate crisis.

Advancing Integrated Responses to Climate-Security Risks: Global and African Perspectives

Across the African continent, the impacts of climate change and the related security and development risks have become more pronounced. In the Lake Chad Basin, climate change has intensified competition over scarce natural resources--undermining the livelihoods of five million people, increasing internal displacement, and exacerbating the risk of violence and recruitment by terrorist organizations, namely Boko Haram. Concurrently, the Horn of Africa is grappling with overlapping crises, including COVID-19 and a locust infestation, which are aggravating food insecurity risks, the loss of livelihoods, and the resort to transnational organized crimes; all of which are challenging the ability of governments to respond effectively. These climate security risks are further compounded by Africa’s relatively low national preparedness and community resilience, as well as the considerable financing gap it faces in addressing these issues and achieving sustainable development pathways. In response to the growing recognition of these devastating impacts, African governments and regional organizations have taken positive steps towards addressing the development and security implications of climate threats. For instance, the AU has established a ‘climate cluster’, bringing relevant departments under a common umbrella to better assess and address climate security risks across the continent. However, the scale of action falls dramatically short of the increasing need. This accentuates the urgency for accelerating efforts towards climate adaptation and integrating climate-related security and development risks into national planning, peacebuilding, and climate-targeted programs. Accordingly, this session will highlight the systemic and interactive nature of climate threats and take stock of preventive, inclusive, and integrated climate policies and responses in Africa, and the role of international support. It will discuss the opportunities and challenges of integrating and addressing climate-related security risks in development planning, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding at multiple levels.

Martin Stopford on Coronavirus, Climate Change & Smart Shipping: 3 Maritime Scenarios 2020 -2050”

Speaker:
Dr. Martin Stopford, Non-Executive President, Clarksons Research

Webinar Title:
Coronavirus, Climate Change & Smart Shipping – Three Maritime Scenarios 2020 – 2050 Preparing for Changes that are “On the Cards”.

Organized on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.

Description:
The shipping industry’s preparedness to meet the challenges of climate change and the digital revolution has been patchy and disjointed. The Covid-19 pandemic which has been added to the mix lately might shake up the status quo and be a catalyst for the radical measures needed.

This is the first public presentation that elaborates on the White Paper which Dr. Martin Stopford published just recently.
He outlines three scenarios for the evolution of the industry during the period 2020-2050, a period during which the maritime industry must rebuild its cargo fleet.

The three sets of scenarios cover:
Sea Trade
Shipbuilding Requirements
Ship Technology

As Dr. Stopford mentions “We know we cannot predict the future. But we can try to prepare for changes that are clearly “on the cards”. Not preparing can be riskier and more expensive than the “safe” option of doing nothing.” The White Paper and presentation can help the industry assess alternative strategies and prepare for the way ahead.

The replay, white paper and presentation slides can be accessed for free on our website at:

Chris Field's Presentation on Climate Change

Chris Field, a leader of the 2007 Nobel Prize winning team and lead author of the study on the effects of global climate change, was the keynote speaker at Tahoe South's Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan 10.

This year's conference, hosted by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, examined current and future climate change expectations, policy matters, Hurricane Sandy and avalanche forecasting, awareness and safety.

Field was part of the Nobel Prize winning team that assessed the scientific, technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of the vulnerability (sensitivity and adaptability) to climate change and the negative and positive consequences for ecological systems, socio-economic sectors and human health, with an emphasis on regional and cross-sectoral issues.

Aspen U // Bill McKibben

Central Park hit 68 degrees in January. Australia is mostly on fire. And yet, these news stories don’t impress. Not only is climate change here to stay, but governments worldwide have widely failed to implement policy sufficient to the challenge. We seem to be willingly and literally going down in flames. The question becomes: what do we do now? The guy to answer that question is Bill McKibben.

Bill McKibben broke the climate story with his book The End of Nature, in 1989, and has gone on to write two dozen more books while publishing in journals ranging from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. With Middlebury students, he created the group 350.org. It is hard to overstate McKibben’s importance in the climate movement, but it’s also hard to overstate his humanity, which comes in the form of a wide-eyed fascination with the world and the people in it. So with his trip to Aspen we get to drink beer with this guy, to listen and converse, and perhaps then to go out and solve this big climate problem together?
