Terceira Island AZORES Portugal - Ep. 20
In this week of Sailing Zephyr we leave the Horta Marina in Faial and sail to the nearby island of Terceira. One of our most magical sails due to James and I spotting some Sperm Whales in the early morning shift change.
We arrive in Terceira and find a beautiful little anchorage just off the main beach in the city of Angra do Heroismo. This island is known for its festivities and food - The Party Island of the Azores. Like all the islands in the Azores, this one had so much to offer and we were excited to explore the botanical gardens, all the quaint little fishing villages and the museums. We also brave the cold waters of the Atlantic, James practices his Portuguese and we eat A LOT of good food.

TERCEIRA Island ???????? Drone Aerial 4K 2024 | Azores Açores Portugal
Terceira (2024) was the third island of the Azores archipelago to be discovered by the Portuguese (Terceira means 'the third' in Portuguese). It is a volcanic island which is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and the Americas. The capital of the island is Angra do Heroísmo where around 15,000 citizens live. São Mateus da Calheta is a civil parish within the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. The total population of Terceira is 55,000. The island has an international airport and frequent flights to Lisbon. Serra de Santa Bárbara is the highest point of Terceira with 1,021 m.

In this video, first, we are going to talk about what tourists find the most annoying on the Azores (from what I have heard from them the most) and then, a couple of things to consider if you are planning to move here full time.

hiHi guys welcome to Travelzilla. Please join me on a walking tour of the incredible historic city of ANGRA DO HEROISMO, located on TERCEIRA ISLAND, THE AZORES ISLANDS, PORTUGAL. The Azores is one of the most iconic archipelagos of the Atlantic. It is comprised of 9 islands: PICO, SAO JORGE, TERCEIRA, SANTA MARIA, GRACIOSA, FLORES, SAO MIGUEL, CORVO and FAIAL islands. Some say the the 1oth island is located in Brazil, the island of FLORIANOPOLIS (LOLOL). Just kidding.
The Island of TERCEIRA is home to ANGRA DO HEROISMO, a city so important that is considered a WORLD HERITAGE SITE by UNESCO because it was the first major European city that resulted from the European voyages outside the continent during the renaissence era. ANGRA DO HEROISMO was the cpital of Portugal 2 times, it was a place of arrival for some of the most important navigators of their time as well as the birthplace of the liberal revolution of Portugal. Empreror PEDRO I of Brazil ( PEDRO IV of PORTUGAL) abdicated from his throne as emperor of Brazil. He left PEDRO II his 5 year old sone in his place and went back to Portugal to regain his crown as king of Portugal. It all started here in Angra do Heroismo. Pedro's saga to regain Portugal from his own brother, in what became known as the liberal revolution.
In this video I take you on a walking tour of Angra do heroismo. During this virtual tour we will walk all over the historical center. We will visit places like SÉ Street and Cathedral, Almeida Garrett Sq, several historic churches, the statue of navigator VASCO DA GAMA, the city archives, the Duque of Terceira Gardens so on and so forth. I will tell you a little bit of my own personal history and also about the history of the city and how they are linked!
I also talk about how ANGRA DO HEROISMO was a model city to Brazil. Most colonial cities in Brazil (then Portugal) were modeled after Angra, which is why it is a world heritage site. Between Europe and America, the nine Azores islands are part of routes, journeys and the greatest scenery of the “blue ocean highways”. There is an island with an even greater geostrategic value that was a staging post for the ships that lead the European maritime expansion: Terceira Island.

PERFECT DAY WALK on Terceira: Azores Island Life (Walking to Feteira)
When most people think of island life, they probably think of excessive partying, bikini models running around everywhere... you get the idea. Maui, Phuket, or the Bahamas this ain't.
But this is my idea of a perfect day on the island of Terceira in Portugal's Azores Islands: a long peaceful walk, exploring the neighborhoods and views of the Atlantic, and the ever present Ilhéus das Cabras - the Cabras Islets. Follow me as I walk from the neighborhood of Atalaia in the the Angra do Heroismo municipality to the town of Feteira and see what I find in the end and along the way.
