Tasting Popular South Bengaluru Special Banana Leaf Meal At UDUPI SRI KRISHNA BHAVAN | 20 VEG Dishes

popular vegetarian lunch, baale ele oota, vegetarian lunch, thaali, udupi sri krishna bhavan, gandhi bazar, basavangudi, south bangalore, poori saagu, kadubu, palya, vegetable, sambar, tilli saaru, rasam, hollige, south canara meal, udupi meal, south indian,, vegetarian, traditional south indian lunch

When it comes to festive vegetarian indulgence here in Namma Bengaluru, one looks forward to a good baale ele oota, a meal that is served on a banana leaf. And a popular one at that is the 20-dish special lunch served at the Gandhi Bazaar, Basavanagudi outpost of Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan, a vegetarian eatery that first opened doors in 1926. In this episode, I not only savour this special lunch but also step into their kitchen to catch the making of a steamed ‘kadubu’ and the South Canara style rasam, known as the Tilli Saaru, by Ganesh, their ‘adige bhatru’, or chief cook, who has been cooking here for over 40 years. There is something truly auspicious about eating off a banana leaf. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Special Banana Leaf Lunch
This is an indulgent lunch affair representative of the flavours of the Udupi-Kundapura region in most of the 20-dishes that make for a typical baale ele oota offering here. The food is served hot and fresh, and conveys a wholesomeness that is pleasing and satisfying. One begins with a traditional grape juice and mosaru vade, menasinkai bhajji, kosambari, kadubu-chutney, couple of coconut-rich vegetables before proceeding to the substantial mains of poori-saagu, anna (rice) served with tilli saaru and sambar. Servings are unlimited, and the servers are quick and efficient in dispensing refills. Make sure you save space for the desserts, a payasa and hollige, before you close with curd rice, banana and beeda, in true South Canara style.

Tasty, Old Fashioned South Canara Veg Lunch At UDUPI SRI KRISHNA BHAVAN, Bengaluru | 100 Years Old!

#udupisrikrishnabhavan #lunch #bangalore

pure vegetarian restaurant, oldest restaurant, bengaluru, south canara cuisine, sambar, idli, vegetarian thaali, plate meals, thaali, lunch, popular bengaluru restaurants, balepet, chickpet, must try restaurant, historical restaurant, heritage eatery, bangalore food tour, eating out in bengaluru, vegetarian, eateries in bangalore, support local

My last visit to Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan in Balepete for an early tiffin coincided with the conclusion of their lunch service. I watched some of the lunch crowd relishing their thali meals, and made a note to return for the same someday. And so when on a recent visit to Chickpete, a lunch opportunity suddenly opened up, I lost no time in heading to this near-100-year-old eatery to taste their South Canara lunch. It’s a simple affair - couple of vegetable preparations, lentils, rasam, poori and rice, even a sweet - quite homely in its taste and sumptuous enough to fill one’s belly for a very affordable Rs. 110 only. And consumed in the restaurant’s heritage setting, it is also the sort of meal that transports one back to ‘good ole yesteryear’! Definitely plan a lunch here when in the area.

Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

Nearly 100 Years, UDUPI SRI KRISHNA BHAVAN Is Bengaluru’s Best Kept Secret! Sagu Dosae, Best Sambar

#udupisrikrishnabhavan #balepete #bangalore

pure vegetarian restaurant, oldest restaurant, bengaluru, south canara cuisine, sambar, rava idli, vada, vade, sagu dosae, masala dosa, south indian tiffin, dumrot, badam halwa, gulab jamun, filter coffee, popular bengaluru restaurants, balepet, chickpet, must try restaurant, historical restaurant, heritage eatery, bangalore food tour, eating out in bengaluru, vegetarian, eateries in bangalore, support local

Although established at its present location in 1926, its culinary provenance dates back to the early 1900s. One of Bengaluru’s oldest eateries, Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan has not received the kind of recognition other eateries of its ilk have perhaps due to its location amidst the hustle and bustle of Balepete. The food here is prepared the old-fashioned way, not the sort that swims in rivers of ghee or is buried under mounds of butter, khoa, or other such dairy decadence. Which is good, especially if you want to indulge, sans any guilt, in its tasty South Canara fare, like many of its regular patrons, some who have been visiting for 50 years! I soak in some charming old-world vibe as I make a tasty meal of some of their must-try dishes including a scrumptious, very popular sagu dosae and perhaps the most impressionable sambar you will find in this city. A sambar that we also watched the making of.
Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

Exploring Authentic Tamil-Brahmin Vegetarian Banana Leaf Meal At Iyer Mess In Bengaluru|Malleshwaram

#SouthIndianMeals #Bangalore #GourmetOnTheRoad

Serving authentic Tamil-Brahmin style meals for close to 60 years now, Iyer Mess is a go-to spot for lunch at Malleshwaram, Bengaluru.

Founded in 1959, the mess is located in the home of owners, Venkatesh and Kamala Iyer.

The couple who have carried forward the tradition of serving homestyle vegetarian fare, use recipes handed down by Mr Iyer’s father to maintain taste and style of cooking.

In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers Editor, Kripal Amanna visits the well-known mess to explore its kitchen and taste the ‘veg homely meal’.

The kitchen starts as early as 5:00 am every morning, preparing a standard banana leaf meal, comprising of Rice, Sambar, Rasam, Poriyal, Kootu, Pickle, Yoghurt, Vada and Appalam. On Sundays the menu features a special additions of Payasam and Mor Kuzambu.

GOURMET ON THE ROAD RATING
Rs 70 for a vegetarian meal

Kose/ Cabbage Poriyal
A fresh, crunchy medley of cabbage and flecks of coconut, simply seasoned with mustard. 8/10

Kumbalakai/ Sweet Pumpkin Kootu
A mildly tempered, delicious preparation. Can taste the sweetness of the pumpkin, a tasty combination with the chapati.
9/10

Paruppu Vada
deep fried yet wholesome because of the lentil or paruppu in the vada. Flecks of onion impart hints of sweetness and the green chillies give it that spicy kick.
8/10

Chapati
Soft and light, a homestyle chapati.
7/10

Thayir Sadam/Curd Rice
thick and creamy, homemade curd. the milk for the curd is cooked on a coal stove!
9/10

Pickle
Spicy, bitter accompaniment called oorukka in Tamil.
7/10

Moolangi/ Radish Sambar
Big in flavour, the spicy, fiery kick from the chilli is very prominent in this sambar. The radish is cooked just right!
10/10

Rasam
a bit mellow. not as robustly flavoured as one would expect.
6/10

Appalam
Crunchy, deep fried, perfect when eaten with rice and rasam or sambar.

Iconic NEW KRISHNA BHAVAN Will Close On 6th Dec 2023 After Serving Bengaluru For 69 Years!

new krishna bhavan, malleshwaram, nkb malleshwaram, malleshwara, closing of iconic restaurant, west bengaluru, south indian, south canara, vegetarian, bangalore food trail, bengaluru food tour, karnataka food tour, gourmet on the road, kripal amanna, food lovers tv, food lovers india, truth in food

There are only a handful of culinary institutions in this city that have stood the test of time for half a century or more. Serving their patrons faithfully, not just in their fare that harks back to the days when things were simple, but also conveying the nostalgia of many memories across generations. And so it is indeed a sad day when one of them has to close doors soon.

I have visited New Krishna Bhavan in Malleshwaram a few times, to film and to partake of their trademark, unfussy South Canara fare. This time at the restaurant felt different though, its imminent closure palpable in the sentiments echoed by the owners, cooks and many customers for whom NKB was part of their life.

This is an episode I wish I didn’t have to film. But here it is nonetheless. Take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

Note: The restaurant’s last day of operation is 5th Dec 2023.

Not many know this interesting trivia about New Krishna Bhavan, Malleswaram, that until the recent lockdown this restaurant had not closed its doors even for a single day ever since they opened for business in 1954! Quite in contrast to the popularity of this vegetarian eatery.
NKB, as it is fondly referred to by the locals who flock here not just for the satisfying tiffin and lunch fare, but also for tasty innovations like the green masala idli and the button idli, which apparently was made popular here first. In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, we catch the making of the intriguing and rather tasty green masala idli and also partake of a sumptuous breakfast at New Krishna Bhavan. Support Mr. & Mrs. Iyer's 60-Yr-Old IYER MESS | Takeaway A Tasty Veg BANANA LEAF Meal! Rerun Episode

#vegetarian #takeaway #bangalore

Mr Venkatesh and Mrs Kamala Iyer serve up Tamil and Kerala Brahmin traditions in their tiny eatery, Iyer Mess, established by the former’s father in 1959. The food is simple, yet delicious, cooked by Mrs Iyer and honestly priced at Rs. 80 for a sumptuous vegetarian banana leaf meal.
As I catch up with the Iyers when I get this takeaway meal, I can't help but feel sorry for this elderly couple who are trying hard to grasp the realities of business in the new normal. From 200 meals a day, they are now reduced to under 30, and despite the financial hardships that they endure, they have held onto their staff, lodging and boarding them at home to ensure they are safe. Spare a moment for establishments like Iyer Mess even as you watch this episode. Take care and stay safe.

Vegetarian Meal
A simple meal, the Iyer Mess banana leaf is laden with everything that one needs for tasty sustenance. With a menu that changes everyday, the spread - rice, sambar, rasam, kootu, poriyal, thayir, pickle and papad - is nourishing, and of the sort you would relish at a Tamil home blessed with a good cook. And offers great value.

Tasting SOUTH BENGALURU’S Popular Vegetarian Thali & Coffee At MAIYAS | Traditions Meet Food Science

#Maiyas #VegetarianLunch #Bangalore

bengaluru, bangalore popular lunch, south indian lunch, vegetarian lunch, karnataka lunch, vegetarian thali, poori saagu, kosambri, beetroot palya, vegetable, pulav, rice, sambar, rasam, anna saaru, payasam, jayanagar, south bengaluru, sadananda maiya, maiyas, coffee

South Bengaluru’s popular vegetarian restaurant, Maiyas prides itself on serving the “purest, cleanest and tastiest food”, says 72 year-old Sadananda Maiya whose family has a legacy in food for nearly a century beginning with Mavalli Tiffin Rooms in 1924. And given his erstwhile venture, MTR Foods, it’s not entirely surprising to even find a food lab on the premises of his restaurant which merges the culinary traditions of South India with food science and technology. In this episode, I take in a quick tour of Maiyas, and also its crowd pleasing special vegetarian thali. Hope you enjoy this episode. Stay safe and happy eating!

Special Meals
This thali has everything you need for a satisfying, nourishing meal. First on the plate are hot, puffy puris, sans any residual oil, that goes well with a creamy potato saagu, a crunchy kosambari and palya (dry vegetable preparation). Next troops in a flavourful pulao, followed by anna (rice), sambar and rasam with a sweet payasam thrown in. Best to linger over this meal, nice and slow.
