But he never forgot it; six years later, when he got his first job, he still wanted it – and found a used version online. He still remembers the feeling of accomplishment when he first put it on.

The Day The Music Died Ep. 4

In today's video we go to northern Iowa to the town of Clear Lake. We visit the Surf Ballroom and Museum, the last venue that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson aka. The Big Bopper played. The venue still looks like it did in the 1950's which is pretty cool and they still have shows here. Afterwards we took a little drive to the crash site to see the memorial which is literally in the middle of a corn field. Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup were supposed to be on the plane but Richardson wasn't feeling well and didn't want to ride the bus so Jennings gave him his seat on the plane. Allsup and Valens flipped a coin on who would get the last seat on the plane. The event later became known as The Day The Music Died after Don McLean referred to it as such in his song American Pie.

Dan McLean - no walled urban fortresses

It's safe to say that no single individual has had more impact on the course of development in the western stretches of Lincoln Park than MCL Companies' Dan McLean.

MCL's large projects in the area include the 150-unit Lakewood Commons, the 250-unit Embassy Club and the block-sized Alrgeld Club on Fullerton.

The size of MCL's developments, however, is the least important aspect of McLean's lasting impact on the area. In the pre-McLean era developers took it for granted that it was necessary to build walled fortresses or high brick walls fronting the street to entice buyers. Walk south on Larrabee from Armitage Ave to North Ave and you'll intuit how destructive this style of building is to the urban fabric.

McLean's developments front the street and are open to pedestrian through-traffic, preserving and extending a more traditional neighborhood pattern. He channeled many of the lessons of Jane Jacobs before having read her.

An earlier part of my interview with Dan McLean is at YouTube, and more will follow.

Dan McLean, Still potential in cities

In this segment of our interview, MCL Companies' Dan McLean outlines some of the reasons he continues to build and expand to other cities beyond Chicago as other companies contract.

Resident condo owner confronts trespasser/squatter

Welcome to Fairfax County Virginia (Tysons, McLean).. where the @fairfaxcountypolice does nothing.

We’ve been experiencing a homeless trespasser and serial squatter continuing to come onto our private condo residence. The bad odor coming from this person was extremely strong. The odor was particularly pungent as soon as I walked into the clubhouse facility. This individual frequently uses our gym as shelter at night as well as the showers and sauna. The individual has also been seen stacking yoga mats to sleep-on in the past. No one has done anything about this issue hence his return. The police has done little to keep this person out after multiple instances. I took it upon myself to confront the individual knowing the risk. There is no reasoning with this bum since all he does is mumble and gaslight.

Do better, Virginia. Do better.

WARNING: Do not try this at home, kids.

EHC export documenting session on 20th January

A session with Ewin Cameron (Scottish Development International), Kevin Shakespeare (Institute of Exports), Ian McWatt (Food Standard Scotland) discussing EHC export documenting.

Mystery at Moonlight Head, the story of intrigue and bravery of the shipwreck of the Fiji in 1891.

Author and history enthusiast Alan McLean begins this animated and dramatic talk as sixteen year old Louis Evans. Louis wrote a letter to his Grandfather back in England describing the drama of the wreck of the Fiji at the remote Moonlight Head on the Southwest coast of Victoria on September 6th, 1891. The crew was anxious as the iron hulled Fiji was carrying a large quantity of explosives. It took 12 hours for the Port Campbell rescue party to reach the remote the remote wreck site.
All this time, the crewmen were clinging to the bowsprit of the ship hoping to be as far from the expected explosion as possible.
Of the 25 crew, 11 lost their lives in the surf. Alan made the observation that those who stripped off their clothing arrived safely and near naked on the beach but of those who drowned most entered the water fully clothed! Such was the Victorian attitude in those times.
The audience questions were particularly interesting with a diver in the audience, who had explored the Fiji wreck over the years, sharing his underwater experiences of the wreck site.
