Takayama Old Town Street Food

Takayama Old Town! A vintage shopping district filled with amazing street foods and merchandise shops! The prices in here are way cheaper than the cities :D.

I went here on November, so there's no snow yet, but when there's snow, it's very beautiful! i'm so gonna come back during winter next time!

Thanyaporn restaurant is amazing too! It's Vegeterian and Halal friendly! For an Indonesian like me, who ate spicy food all my life, this is definitely a great restaurant considering Japan didn't put much spices in their food :D.

Here's the link for Thanyaporn Guest house, they have a lot of services, the owner are so nice! 10/10 will come back!

- Miyagawa Morning Market
- Sanmachi Suji (Takayama Old Town)

Additionally, try out some local Japanese street food or local food from Senbei (rice crackers), Takoyaki (octopus balls) and Taiyaki (fish shaped dessert snack) at the morning markets, which provide a great opportunity to pick up some local produce, from fruit & beg to honey, as well as arts and crafts.

A Taste of Takayama

Experience Takayama's charming ryokans, sake breweries and street food with Intrepid Travel:

Far from the bright lights of Japan's bustling cities lies the mountain town of Takayama. This historic old town has one of the best food scenes in Japan. Stroll through streets of traditional merchant houses which are now home to cafes, restaurants and sake breweries (and be sure to stop in for a taste). Spend the night at a ryokan and enjoy authentic Japanese hospitality and traditional meals. The easy pace and quiet atmosphere will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to keep exploring the land of the rising sun.

Want to discover this quaint town for yourself? Visit Japan with Intrepid Travel.

Want to learn more about Intrepid Travel?

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year. And although we're a bit larger these days - with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) - our mission remains the same. We still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.

TAKAYAMA, JAPAN: Takayama festival, amazing street food, and Hida beef!

We loved the Takayama festival, with its parades, gilded floats, beautiful scenery, and delicious food (including Hida beef wagyu). Takayama (高山) - also known as Hida Takayama - is a beautiful city in the Gifu Prefecture, secluded in the Japanese Alps. There are two festivals held annually in Takayama - one in the spring and one in the fall. We attended the Takayama autumn festival, which was truly amazing. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. I look forward to visiting again, even if the festival is not occurring when I’m there, because the entire area is stunning.

If you decide to attend the festival, book accommodations as early as possible, as hotels and other lodging sell out months in advance.
