Taiwan ???????? - An Underrated Travel Destination and Why You SHOULD Visit! | Taiwan Travel Guide

Taiwan is an island nation deeply rooted with Chinese culture and heritage. In present day, it is in a geopolitical struggle to maintain its democracy from being part of China. Despite its small size, Taiwan has a dynamic and resilient society, with a thriving democracy and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The island's political status is a subject of ongoing debate, with China claiming Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan operates as a separate, self-governing entity.

It was a country I never really intended to visit but have since fallen in love with the people, the landscape, the food, and the customs.

In this video, I travel around Taiwan and showcase a few places to go and what it's like visiting this small island nation.

FAQs
========================================
Q: How long did it take?
A: My trip was 14 days.

Q: Which airport should I arrive at?
A: Having travelled from the other side of the globe, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. If travelling from Australia or Asia, there may be connecting flights to Kaohsiung International Airport on the south-west coast of Taiwan.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: You can see a cost breakdown of my trip at 12:37

Q: How did you pay for things or get local currency?
A: I just take money out from an ATM using my debit card. It has a small international transaction fee, but it’s minuscule if you only do it once or twice. You may be able to order foreign currency at better rates, but it’s not something I personally bothered with.

Q: Is it easy to find petrol stations?
A: Yes, you'll find one pretty much everywhere, including remote areas in the mountains! I always went with caution and ensured I had a full tank before entering remote areas, however to my shock, there were petrol stations, and even 7 Eleven stores in remote mountains! Just to be safe, I would highly recommend getting a full tank of petrol before going to the mountains.

Q: Which month did you go?
A: I visited mid November to early December and spent 14 days there.

Taipei is the Yin and Yang of cities. A place where new meets old. Modern, high built living apartments and sustainable towers stand next to smoky temples and old grid covered apartments which were built in the 70s.
It´s beauty is born from a blend of chinese , japanese, southeast asian and american influences, seen from its architecture, cuisine and courtesy of its people.
Depending on where you start you can reach within 40min georgeous waterfalls, tea plantation hills, phenomenal lake views , mountain ranges with ocean views or sand sculptures and beaches to chill out.

I'm so happy to be back in Taiwan, one of my favorite nations in the world! I was invited here by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau to cover parts of the island that I never knew existed, which led me down to the countryside to visit a few indigenous tribes. Did you know that the indigenous Taiwanese were the original settlers of the Philippines and many other Pacific Islands? I was fascinated to learn about this!

Along the 4 day journey around Taiwan with Deanna, I found it fascinating to see the difference between rural life and city life, which became the concept of this story. We went to Taiwan's second-biggest city called Kaohsiung to uncover the differences between Taiwan’s rural areas and its bustling cities. I was mesmerized by the amazing temples and delicious food! Finally, we made our way to Taipei where I take you on a journey to understand the wacky (yet fun) culture and experience a night market - one of the singular best things about Taiwan.

This is my Taiwan story, go create yours:

P.S. - There are a few minor corrections to the video that I want to make - thank you to those who helped fact-check!

1) At 1:40: Taiwan was under Japanese colonial rule from 1895 and left in 1945 at the end of World War II.
2) At 1:35: I misspoke - The Spanish and Dutch colonies were actually in the 17th century.

Thank you for watching and I'll see you next week!

Driving in Taipei Taiwan 4K.

Let's see what it is like driving in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Busy streets and lots of bridges.

Top 7 Things to do in Taipei, TAIWAN

Taipei unexpectedly turned out to be one of our favourite destinations in Asia. Some of the places on this list were absolutely magical. This Taiwan series is the last of our videos during our time overseas before we had to scramble to get back into NZ amidst all the travel restrictions that were popping up daily.

If you're planning a trip to Taiwan and Taipei, we hope you'll find our Top Things to do in Taipei travel guide handy. There are a bunch of must see places in Taipei, these were our faves.

Starting things off we head over to Daan Forest Park, the largest park in Taipei. Peter had an amazing close encounter with a parrot which he befriended. We were pleasantly surprised by the wildlife at Daan Park. Definitely a must visit for nature lovers.

Daan Forest Park
Address: No. 1號, Section 2, Xinsheng South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106

Next up we head to a famous town called Shifen. Shifen is best known for two things, Shifen Waterfall and Shifen Old Street. Shifen waterfall is Taiwan's broadest waterfall. It's also known as Little Niagara of Taiwan, while Shifen Old Street is where sky lanterns get released (which we opted not to do for environmental reasons). While at Shifen Old Street, there's also nice scenery, snacks and gift shops to enjoy.

Shifen Waterfall and Shifen Old Street are however very close to one another though and they were both part of our transportation package together with Jiufen.

Shifen Waterfall
Address: 226, Taiwan, New Taipei City, Pingxi District, 乾坑10號

Shifen Old Street
Address: 226, Taiwan, New Taipei City, Pingxi District

After visiting Shifen, we headed over to one of the most magical places we've ever been - Jiufen. If you love the Japanese animated movie Spirited Away you will love Jiufen because there is definitely something special about this village that really resembles the famous Studio Ghilbi anime.

Jiufen is commonly misconceived to be the inspiration for the town and bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, however Miyazaki has said it wasn't but the place really does bear a resemblance and gives you the Spirited Away vibes. It's no wonder so many people flock to Jiufen, Taiwan and have dubbed it the Real Life Spirited Away.

Jiufen
Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan 224

To get to these places you can take public transport, however we found a shuttle bus option offered by Klook which made getting to Shifen and Jiufen much more convenient and relaxing.

Another must do activity when you're in Taipei or Taiwan, is visit a Taiwanese night market. There are a ton of nightmarkets to visit in Taipei, but for this video we went to Tonghua night market. It's also known as Linjiang night market. Tonghua is a much more local night market than others in Taipei so it's less crowded compared to the far more popular tourist night markets such as Shilin and Raohe. Nothing beats a hot lu rou fan on a cool night and the smell of the stinky tofu will either repel or make you salivate.

Tonghua / Linjiang Night Market
Address: Alley 1, Lane 40, Linjiang Street, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
Hours: 6pm–midnight

Often hailed as one of the top must visit attractions of Taipei, is the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (CSK Memorial Hall) is the most prominent historical landmark in Taiwan. At the complex, you'll also see the Liberty Arches as well as the National Concert Hall and National Theatre.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall
Address: No. 21號, Zhongshan South Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Hours: Monday - Sunday 9am–6pm

Did you know that many of the treasures from the Forbidden Palace are actually located in Taipei, Taiwan? Check them out at the National Palace Museum. Definitely another popular must visit attraction in Taipei.

National Palace Museum
Address: No. 221, Sec 2, Zhi Shan Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, Taiwan 111
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8:30am–9pm

Finally for a majestic view of Taipai city and Taipei 101 you can take a brisk hike up Elephant Mountain, also known as Xiangshan.

Elephant Mountain is located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan.

BBC Travel Show - Taiwan special (week 44)

Kaohsiung City, Taiwan - Morning Walk [4K60]

A 4K walk around Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I took the high-speed train from Taipei over to the second largest city in Taiwan. Kaohsiung has a population of just under 3,000,000 people. I stayed near Formosa Blvd Station which is Conveniently located where the city's two metro lines intersect which makes getting around quite easy. I recorded this walk on the morning of Tuesday, December 3rd around 9:45 am. I start off by heading out of the Cloud Hotel where I was staying and wander around some of the major streets in the Formosa Blvd Station area and also head down some smaller side streets and alleyways. I come across a local market and later encounter a dog wearing a muzzle who decided to run right at me which was probably the biggest scare I've had yet doing one of these walks. This area also features Liuhe Night Market which one of the more popular ones to visit in the city.

0:01 - Minzhu Road (exiting the cloud hotel)
2:17 - On Qixian 2nd Road (major street)
13:20 - Datong 1st Road (passing through a local market)
13:20 - Nanhua 1st Road (small alley with a market)
14:29 - Linsen 1st Road (market continues )
28:58 - Nantai Road (small street where a dog attacks me)
34:11 - Walking up a small alley
36:48 - Back on Minzhu Road (passing the Cloud Hotel where I stayed)
39:06 - Lihue 2nd Road (and grabbing a beer at the 7/11)

Taipei, Taiwan | City, Sights and People | Tour guide 2023

Taipei, is the capital and a special municipality of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Located in Northern Taiwan, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City that sits about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city of Keelung. Most of the city rests on the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed. The basin is bounded by the relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.

The city of Taipei is home to an estimated population of 2,646,204 (2019), forming the core part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area, also known as Greater Taipei, which includes the nearby cities of New Taipei and Keelung with a population of 7,047,559, the 40th most-populous urban area in the world—roughly one-third of Taiwanese citizens live in the metro areas. The name Taipei can refer either to the whole metropolitan area or just the municipality alone. Taipei has been the political center of the island since 1887, when it first became the seat of Taiwan Province by the Qing dynasty until 1895 and again from 1945 to 1956 by the ROC government, with an interregnum from 1895 to 1945 as the seat of the Government-General of Taiwan during the Japanese rule. The city has been the national seat of the ROC central government since 1949, it became the nation's special municipality (then known as Yuan-controlled municipality) on 1 July 1967 from provincial city status

In comparison to other Asian cities, Taipei has excellent capabilities for managing air quality in the city. Its rainy climate, location near the coast, and strong environmental regulations have prevented air pollution from becoming a substantial health issue, at least compared to cities in southeast Asia and industrial China. However, smog is extremely common and there is poor visibility throughout the city after rainless days.

Motor vehicle engine exhaust, particularly from motor scooters, is a source of air pollution in Taipei. There are higher levels of fine particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the mornings because of less air movement; sunlight reduces some pollution.

As Taiwan's business, financial, and technology hub, Taipei has been at the center of rapid economic development in the country and has now become one of the global cities in technology and electronics. This development is part of the so-called Taiwan Miracle which has seen dramatic growth in the city following foreign direct investment in the 1960s. Taiwan is now a creditor economy, holding one of the world's largest foreign exchange reserves of over US$403 billion as of December 2012
