Trieste has been the land of passage for many well-known personalities, including the Irish writer James Joyce who was so struck by the city that he affirmed: My soul is in Trieste.

Having a real Italian breakfast is something you can do wherever you want in Italy: but how about having your breakfast in front of the sea? Unity of Italy Square, called “Big Square” before the Italian conquer, is the largest square facing the sea in Europe: with its smell of the sea, its liberty building and the multicultural environment, it creates the perfect atmosphere to make you feel more a part of the city and less of a tourist.

The historic centre of Trieste, called “Cavana”, it’s the very core of the city. If you visit Trieste, you must take a walk inside the labyrinth of its narrow streets: you can have a coffee, buy amazing Italian food or have lunch in its small squares.

They represent the two main green lungs of Trieste. The first, located on the San Giusto hill, adjacent to the Castle, is the perfect place for jogging, or walking among the trees. The second is ideal if you want to enjoy some free time away from the bustle of the city, have a nice picnic or take children to play football.

This wonderful patisserie is the very location in which the Irish writer James Joyce started to composed his masterpiece, Ulysses.Their cakes and Italian desserts paired with a good coffee can make every day better.
4:40 - 6. San Giusto Castle and Cathedral.
One of the most representative symbols of the city, the Castle of San Giusto stands on the hill of the same name that dominates the city, its gulf and its hinterland. Wanted by the emperors of Austria, it was built between 1468 and 1636. Beside the Castle, we find the Cathedral, a Catholic church built between 1302 and 1320. Both the Castle and the Cathedral were named after Giusto, a martyr who refused to deny his faith. For this reason, he was sentenced to death. The soldiers tied his hands and feet with a rope, to which lead weights were secured, then he was thrown into the water. Thanks to the lead weights, the body would no longer emerge. But, before sunset, Giusto's body was miraculously carried to the shore by the current.
8:07 - 5. Audace Pier.
The pier was built between 1743 and 1751 on the wreck of the San Carlo, a ship sunk in the port. In 1922, in honour of the first ship of the Italian Navy to arrive in Trieste, the pier was renamed Molo Audace. At one time passenger and merchant ships docked at the San Carlo pier, given the fervent trade of the city of Trieste: now the sailboats dock for the famous Barcolana, a regatta that takes place in October, which attracts thousands of tourists every year.
9:10 - 4. Vittoria Lighthouse.
This is the active lighthouse in Trieste: also, it’s a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen of the first world war, as the inscription says: SHINE AND REMIND OF THE FALLEN ON SEA MCMXV-MCMXVIII.
Fun fact: the statue of the Winged Victory raises a torch with her left hand, while with her right she holds a laurel column. Rumour has it that during those days when the Bora blows in Trieste, her wings seems to move a little.

This trail is perfect for all ages: it is very easy to access and the view is something you can’t miss.

Take a walk, ride a bike near the sea or sunbathe: these are just few activities you can do in Barcola.

The Castle was the residence of Maximilian, Emperor of the Austro-Ungarian Empire, and his wife Carlotta. Unfortunately, their story didn’t end well.

Being is a deep-water port; the ships sail right up to the city. They could not get closer. It has therefore been fought over throughout history and has been a maritime gateway for Germany, Austria, and Central Europe. Sine 1939 it has belonged to Italy. As such it is multicultural, it is well-developed and has much history and many churches. Slovenia is only 8km away, and Croatia is just 30km away. There is a free elevator to the top of San Giusto Hill if you do not want the climb, Jean walks up from the Roman Theatre, past the 14th Century Cucherna Tower. After the castle and Cathedral, she walks down through the Johann Joachim Winckelman Museum and Gardens towards the James Joyce Museum and the Statue of Joyce at the canal, the old shipping port. There you can relax and have a drink or lunch. She finishes by showing us the Aquarium, the pier and the old lighthouse near the ship, but found by turning right as you leave the ship and step ashore. Probably Trieste is the most cosmopolitan cities in Italy: with its characteristic mix of languages, peoples and religions, the city merges Central European and Mediterranean souls.
You can consider Trieste as “the little Vienna on the sea”.
The heart of the city is Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. The buildings around are wonderful, but the most spectacular side of the square is the one facing the sea.
Almost the entire coastline next to Trieste is occupied by the port, which is still the busiest in the Mediterranean.
Located in the heart of the historic old town, Grand Canal is a small waterway to allow boats direct access into the city centre.
The Roman Amphitheater dates back to the 1st Century AD.
Located next to Trieste Cathedral, the Castle of Saint Giusto, was built in the 15th century by the Hapsburgs.
Molo Audace is a fascinating promenade to admire the coastal view.

Today I will take you through the most important places in Trieste. We will have a coffee in two of the most historic cafes in the city!
???? Best Tours in Italy ????
☕ Caffè Tommaseo is the oldest coffee house still in operation in Trieste, founded in 1830. With its beautiful Belgian mirrors, decorated ceilings and wooden chairs in the Thonet style, it is well worth a visit. The cafe was restored in 1997 maintaining the original sophisticated neoclassical style.
In today's video, we have a typical Trieste coffee, Capo in B with hot chocolate (a tradition of the city, where they don't serve you water but chocolate!).
☕ Caffè degli Specchi, the only testimony to what was once Trieste's main square full of cafes, among which are Caffè Garibaldi (below the Palazzo del Municipio), Caffè Flora (in Casa Pitteri) and Caffè Orientale (below Palazzo Loyd) , now part of the past.
Nicolò Privolo opened the cafe in 1839. He decided to cover the walls with engraved mirrors, each of which recounted a historical event that occurred in 19th century Europe.
The motif of the mirrors, more than aesthetic, was functional, since, before electricity (electric lighting was not introduced until 1933), most visitors left at dusk because the cafes were dark.
Mirrors allowed candles and oil lamps to be reflected hundreds of times, illuminating the cafe with blazing light, allowing visitors to linger even after dark.
I will take you to Caffe degli Specchi, where we will have Mocaccino coffee. Another typical coffee of Trieste.

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.
Trieste, as travel writer Jan Morris once opined, 'offers no unforgettable landmark, no universally familiar melody, no unmistakable cuisine', yet it's a city that enchants, its 'prickly grace' inspiring a cult-like roll-call of writers, exiles and misfits.
Tumbling down to the Adriatic from a wild, karstic plateau and almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia, the city is physically isolated from the rest of the Italian peninsula. From as long ago as the 1300s, Trieste has indeed faced east, later becoming a free port under Austrian rule.
The city blossomed under the 18th- and 19th-century Habsburgs; Vienna's seaside salon was also a fluid borderland where Italian, Slavic, Jewish, Germanic and even Greek culture intermingled. Devotees come to think of its glistening belle époque cafes, dark congenial bars and buffets and even its maddening Bora wind as their own; it’s also a great base for striking out into the surrounding Carso and Collio wine country.
Trieste is the capital of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and has 201,261 inhabitants. It is situated on the crossroads of several commercial and cultural flows: German middle Europe to the north, Slavic masses and the Balkans to the east, Italy and then Latin countries to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
Its artistic and cultural heritage is linked to its singular border town location. You can find some old Roman architecture (a small theater near the sea, a nice arch into old city and an interesting Roman museum), Austrian empire architecture across the city centre (similar to stuff you can find in Vienna) and a nice atmosphere of metissage of Mediterranean styles, as Trieste was a very important port during the 18th century.
Trieste has always been a very cosmopolitan city. This can be seen in the cultural diversity and even in religion: there is a Greek Orthodox church, a Serbian Orthodox church, a Lutheran church, and a synagogue. There is a tourist office at the edge of Piazza Unità d'Italia, in the Lloyd Triestino building. Information is available in Italian, German, and English, as are tourist maps and brochures of information about attractions in and around the city.
The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is officially quadrilingual (Italian, Slovene, Friulian or Eastern Ladin and German). Signs are often only italian in Trieste, as the city itself is generally Italian speaking and the local dialect (a form of the Venetian language) is called Triestine. Surrounding villages and towns are often inhabited by mostly Slovene speakers. Residents, and those working in the city, can easily find free courses to learn Italian or Slovene or German or English and many other languages.
Trieste boasts an extensive old town: there are many very narrow and crooked streets with typical medieval houses. Nearly the entire area is closed to traffic. Half of the city was built under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, so there is present a very large number of palaces that resemble Vienna. An iconic place of this quarter is the majestic Piazza Unità (Unity Square), which is Europe's largest sea-front square.
Museo Revoltella was donated to the city in 1869 by Baron Pasquale Revoltella, a great patron of the arts who liked to surround himself with precious and avant-garde works. The Roman Theatre - Trieste or Tergeste, which probably dates back to the protohistoric period, was enclosed by walls built in 33-32 BC on Emperor Octavius’s orders. Trieste Italy - 23 best things to do in Trieste (Vale Elisabetta)
This has been a very difficult video to produce and edit. While starting to edit this video I unfortunately learnt that my Cousin Elisabetta who appears though this and other videos to follow, suddenly passed away in Trieste.
Her kindness and expert hosting of us in her home town will never be forgotten. At least she got to meet my partner Jo and I managed to meet with her again and spend some great days together before she passed. This video is dedicated to her.

We spent 7 days in Trieste and these are the 23 best things we saw. I think about three full days would be required to see everything on this list.

Trieste was founded in the 2nd Century BC and taken over by the Romans in 177 BC. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian EMpire from 1382-1918 and its architecture represents typical majestic buildings of this era. It has a population of around 200,00 people.
Trieste's status as a free port for centuries meant that is has become a focal point for coffee in Italy. It has a coffee university and is home to the famous Illy Coffee Company.
