Tarawera Falls New Zealand's Hidden Underground River

Once you arrive let the river take you all the way to Tarawera Falls and continue to the edge of Lake Tarawera along one of the best short walks in New Zealand.

I discovered a stunning waterfall at my camp ???? ???????????????????? ????

The Tarawera Falls are spectacular with the water surging straight out of fissures high in a cliff face. The bluff was formed by a massive lava flow! Continuing on up the bluff to the top of the falls you find where the Tarawera River disappears underground, astonishing that such a big river does that. There’s numerous waterfalls and cascades as you walk further upstream and the blues of the water is remarkable. A couple of hours further on, I reached the Tarawera Outlet, Tarawera Lake and enjoyed a picnic lunch of lettuce wraps at the DOC camp.

The road to the Camp is currently closed so there’s foot or boat access only. It’s a lovely camp site which I plan to return to for an overnight camp.

The track is very well benched and you access it via Kawerau. Permits from the Kawerau iSite are required as you enter through private forest land. Don’t rely on Google Maps as there’s closed roads, iSite will advise which roads are open.

Tarawera Falls, New Zealand (DJI)

Tarawera Falls is a 35 m high waterfall on the Tarawera River in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand's North Island.

The Tarawera River flows out of Lake Tarawera and across a rhyolitic lava flow that erupted from Mt Tarawera about 11,000 years ago. The river disappears about 30 metres back from the clifftop into flooded caves in the lava and pours out halfway up the cliff on the far side of the flow.

After rain, part of the flow passes over the top of the cliff as a 65 m tall companion fall.

Access is from the town of Kawerau and is a drive of about 45 minutes over unsealed roads, followed by a walk of about 20 minutes. A forestry access permit is required, available from the Information Centre in Kawerau.

Tarawera Falls & Lake Tarawera filmed by drone in 4K!

The Tarawera Falls are a special kind of waterfalls as the water comes out of the mountains and doesn't flow over the edge. The water comes from Lake Tarawera through Tarawera River until it disappears from the surfaces and flows underground to the waterfalls.
Tarawera Falls are located about 80km out of Rotorua, New Zealand. You have to walk a short track after reaching the car park.

A Walk to the Tarawera Falls and Raft the River

Tarawera River and Falls These are the most spectacular falls in the Bay of Plenty. The Tarawera River plunges 65 metres down a sheer cliff before tumbling down bush-lined rapids. The Tarawera River bed around the falls is carved into ancient volcanic rocks and the high cliffs are thought to be the eroded end face of an ancient lava flow that poured from Mt. Tarawera about 11,000 years ago.

Okere Falls Track, Beautiful Waterfalls With The Wow Factor - Rotorua, New Zealand #Rotorua

Explore forest walks that lead to a series of beautiful waterfalls, the Tutea Caves and Hinemoa's Steps!!

Okere River, “the place of drifting', plummets and scurries through steep, forested ravines before entering the tranquil waters of the Trout Pool. Its beauty can be enjoyed from the Okere Falls Scenic Reserve, which is located 21 kilometres from Rotorua on Trout Pool Road.

Walking tracks in the reserve lead to four picturesque waterfalls, the site of Rotorua's first hydro-electric power station, the Tutea Caves and Hinemoa's Steps. The tracks are well-formed and information panels along the way explain the natural and man-made features within the reserve.Hinemoa's Steps were carved into a rock face in 1907 and lead to the thundering waterfalls and some caves that were used by local Maori women and children to hide during times of war. From a viewing platform near Hinemoa's Steps you can watch rafters descend the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world - an 11 metre, white watered plunge into a deep lazy pool below.

The Trout Pool is a popular fishing spot and trout can be seen swimming gently against the current.
