INCREDIBLE 24 Hours in the Sahara Desert - Merzouga, Morocco

We just made it into the Sahara Desert in Morocco! In our last episode, we left Fez and drove for 9 hours to Merzouga. The drive was actually a lot of fun because we got to see so much of the diverse Moroccan countryside. We made it to our camp just in time for an incredible sunset! In this episode, we are learning about the nomadic way of life, dancing in the desert, and ending the day riding camels through the Sahara.

MERZOUGA, MOROCCO (2023) | Magical Merzouga Desert Trip Overview + Honest Review

Merzouga is a small town located in the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco. It’s known as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at the edge of town, consisting of soaring peaks of sand that change color with the shifting light of dawn and dusk. The most authentic way to experience the desert is on camelback, including an overnight stay at a desert camp. Many companies offer such trips, but they vary greatly in cost, comfort, and experience. In this video, we will show you our 3-day safari experience so you know what to expect from a camel trek. We will also give an honest review and different desert activity options at the end of the video.

The TRUTH about the 3 Day Tour from MARRAKECH to the SAHARA DESERT (Merzouga) - IS IT WORTH IT?

Are you thinking of taking the 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi sand dunes in the Sahara Desert? If so, you've found the right video!

In this video I'll take you along and show you in detail what the tour is like. I'll show the truth, the good and the bad. The driving, the sights along the way, the food, the accommodation, the timings, the costs. Everything.

It’s a popular tour for anyone visiting Morocco, and it’s the real thing right to the edge of the Sahara proper, rather than the one day tours. Before I went I couldn’t find that much information online prior to going. There was no real detail about exactly what you see, where you stay and what you eat. Also, what you get for paying a little extra for the luxury option.
This is the video I wish I had been able to watch before going.

We’ll go from Marrakech and up into the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass - The highest pass through the mountains. From there we come out the other side of the mountains and visit and amazing ancient town of Ait Ben Hadou, where many movies have been filmed. We’ll stop at the Rose valley and the Dadès Gorges before going to the hotel for the night.

On day 2, we’ll visit Tinghir and the Todgha Gorge before getting to Merzouga and riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to the camp for the night.

The final day is the long journey back to Marrakech. On this day I’ll give you my full summary of the tour - the good, the bad, advice and tips.

Here's a full breakdown of what the tour involved, allowing you to go straight to any part you're interested in. Be sure to watch to the end so that you can hear my summary and useful tips!

This was filmed on 24, 25, 26 May.

Best way to Experience the Sahara Desert | Camping in Merzouga, Morocco

The final Morocco vlog is here! Camping in the Sahara Desert at a spot called Merzouga.

Here we rode camels to our remote campsite, spent the night eating Moroccan food and listening to music played by the locals.

In the morning we made our way back to our new campsite by camel ride before jumping into some Jeeps to go on Safari.

To end it all a big long 13 hour bus ride to Marrakesh so we can finally show you what staying in a Riad is like.

Next stop: Flying home to surprise Jess's brother for Christmas!

A Morocco overland film: Will we survive the Sahara desert? #Morocco #overlanding #saharadesert

If you are watching this video you know we survived, at least until editing and uploading. But let us tell you this, first year overlanders with basically no skills driving through colorful villages, sharp mountain egdes and loose sand dunes is guaranteed an adventure. Sit back and enjoy the show! THIS is the Rover without Lewie, destination: MOROCCO.

If you want to know why we didn’t take Lewie with us this time watch the first minute of the video, we’ll tell you and show you where he was.

We would like to thank @euro4x4parts for our partnership and the excellent service of sending our recovery gear the day before we left.

Next to that we also want to do a big shout out to our partners in crime (@lostwithlarry on instagram). Their story is worth following: a medical doctor and pediatric nurse overlanding from the Netherlands to Uganda. They are following their dream and starting a new life: working in a hospital in Uganda.

And to all other overlanders and adventurers we met along the way,
@76Overland for dune driving lessons and Mark from Amazigh Overland for organizing the pizza party:

THANK YOU

We have written multiple guides about overlanding and driving the Sahara Desert in Morocco:

Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

Moroc and Roll
Day 12 - Marrakech to Rabat - 350km - 6 hours ride time.

We all got up later than original planned. Everyone’s quiet and a little bit hung over. It’s very amusing it would seem they’re going to an Irish bar is not the most sensible idea when you’ve got to ride 200 miles the next day.

After packing our gear, we set off for Marrakesh around the Eastern Ring Road and quickly left the city behind us. It’s an incredible bee boring ride up the N9 which runs parallel to the relatively new motorway, which is also a toll. Amusingly, we probably went as fast along this A road than we would on the motorway.

It was a relatively uneventful ride. We stopped in a small town to try and find something to eat, and all the café had stopped serving food. We did find a butcher with a barbecue outside and had his last of his four tagines and some grilled beef.

The roads were all so straight and so boring so when we climbed into some low lying hills, you could stop playing about a bit more, but then the roadwork started on off on off.

We arrived into Rabat city with traffic and associated chaos. Lots of police and roundabouts lots of soldiers lots of roadworks.

Our hotel, Lutece is right on the main track outside of the Medina gates. It is quite noisy, but conveniently located for one night.

Quick wonder into town for a bite to eat, and then bed. Tomorrow we will be heading out into the Riff mountains again towards Chefchaouen.

No photos today as just riding to the destination.
