THE GAMBIA | Visit ABUKO NATURE RESERVE - TANJI BIRD

Video about THE GAMBIA | Visit ABUKO NATURE RESERVE - TANJI BIRD

Abuko Nature Reserve and Tanji Bird Reserve are located in the Kombo South District in the West Coast Region in the southwest coastal area of The Gambia in West Africa.

Abuko is rare among African wildlife reserves: it's tiny, it's easy to reach and you don't need a car to go in. With amazing diversity of vegetation and animals, this well-managed reserve is one of the region's best bird-watching haunts. There are more than 250 bird species that have been recorded, but you we only saw a few. There are 5km of paths through the 106-hectare reserve. There you can watch the Nile crocodile.

Best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many animals and birds.

The Tanji River Bird Reserve is an area of dunes, lagoons and woodland, and contains Bijol Island, a protected breeding ground for Caspian terns. True to name, the reserve is home to many bird species – over 300 at last count. Even if you see few birds, the place and its landscape are worth visiting.

Like Abuko, best day periods to visit is early in the morning, or latter the day, otherwise you won´t see many birds,

Exploring Abuko Nature Reserve, The Gambia

Day 15 takes me into one of the most accessible wildlife reserves in Western Africa. The Abuko Nature reserve in The Gambia is home to a variety of monkey species, crocodiles, and a number of other mammals. On my day hiking through the reserve I spot two species of monkeys, a huge monitor lizard and some other creepy crawlers. The Abuko Nature reserve was fantastic, and one of the best things was that I had it all to myself.

Abuko nature reserve - Gambia

Abuko is unique among West African wildlife reserves in that it's fenced, well-managed and very easy to reach. It gives a good introduction of the Gambian flora and fauna in it's 105ha (260 acres). Abuko Nature Reserve contains both savannah, with open glades of grassland, and rain forest kind of areas, when freshwater reaches of the River Gambia or there is a high ground water table.

THE GAMBIA: Awesome traditional fishing ???????? village of TANJI (Africa)

Gambia, Africa - visit Tanji fishing village in Gambia. Let's travel to Gambia in Africa and let's visit Tanji Fishing Village (also spelt Tanjeh or Tanje) which is close to the Atlantic Ocean beach, in the West Coast Region of The Gambia, in West Africa. Tanji village is a settlement is 30km by road from the capital of Banjul, and approximately 12km southwest of Kololi resort, and adjacent to the Kombo Coastal Road. We are going to visit the area of Tanji Village directly in front of the fishing village and which is a fish landing site, so it is definitely not suitable for swimming. Tanji Vllage is a very active, working beach, you'll find it scattered with old, shredded gillnets, sea snail shells, plastic bags and bottles, and other things floating on the water or resting on the shore. The air is filled with the odour of smoked fish; an unimaginable number of seagulls hover overhead looking for scraps, fishermen land their afternoon catch from long African pirogues, passing buckets of catch onto the heads of local women, who then ferry it to the shore. Activity is frenzied and messy, but surprisingly efficient.

Bijilo Forest Park in Banjul, Gambia

Bijilo Forest Park is a forest park in the Gambia, lying in the coastal zone about 11 km west of Banjul the Kombo Saint Mary District.

The species rich Bijilo Forest Park is a fenced woodland which was gazetted in 1952 and covers an area of 51.3 hectares situated on the coast just south of the Senegambia area of Kololi. The park consists of mainly of closed canopy forest with a significant number of Borassus aethiopum palms. The park was opened to the public in 1991 and now receives over 23,000 visitors per year.

There is a 4.5 km nature trail in the park Park is over that takes visitors through the varied habitats of forest, coastal scrubland and sand dunes and there is also a 'straight' footpath which cuts through the scrub and forest close to the beach often referred to as the 'ornithological path'. This route is the one favoured by visiting birdwatchers. There is a small pond within the forest which is maintained to act as a watering hole for many of the forest animals. Signs, benches and viewing point have been provided for visitors.

Bijilo Forest Park has a diverse fauna of invertebrates, reptiles and mammals. There are troops of green monkeys, Western red colobus, Campbell's mona monkey and patas. The green monkeys have been fed by visitors and this has caused issues with the monkeys and the park is now trying to stop this practice. There is also a population of the nocturnal Senegal bushbaby. Other mammal species which can be seen include the Gambian sun squirrel, African civet, genets, mongooses, brush-tailed porcupine among other smaller, less noticeable species. The forest is also home to a diverse reptile fauna including agama, rainbow and monitor lizards and some interesting and colour ful insects and invertebrates including fire ants, dragonflies, termites, butterflies, and the golden silk orb-weaver.

Over 133 bird species have been recorded in the Bijilo Forest Park including such interesting species as the black-necked weaver, red-billed hornbill, greater honeyguide, bearded barbet, oriole warbler, palm-nut vulture and long-tailed nightjar. These and the many other species make the area attractive to the many European birdwatchers who visit The Gambia. The birdwatching is most productive towards the coast where migrants such as Caspian tern and osprey can be seen.
