Amateur vs. Professional Wildlife Photographer

Morten Hilmer and I have made it to the Amazon Jungle. So, I wanted to see the difference between a professional wildlife photographer and an amateur.

SquareSpace:
Morten's Channel:

When I asked professional wildlife photographer Morten Hilmer to join me in Ecuador for this photography trip, I was excited to learn from him. I'm a professional travel photographer and an amateur/hobbyist wildlife photographer. What's thee difference in the skill level of someone who does wildlife photography for a living and someone like me who just loves animals and can handle a camera.
Well, on today's photo vlog, Morten and I have a bit of an informal photography shoot out in the Amazon basin of Ecuador.

5 Days Wildlife Photography in Yellowstone National Park - ep.1

I am in Yellowstone National Park to spend 5 days photographing wildlife and the beautiful landscapes. The purpose of this two-week trip to America is to bring awareness to nature and the importance of taking better care of it. I am doing this through four lectures for the local schools and by sharing this series of videos.

I am here with Tim who is also a nature photographer.

✦ ABOUT THIS VIDEO

Yellowstone is the first national park in the world and for me it is a great experience to see how this is done and how nature thrives without the impact from humans.
Five days in such an enormous area is way too little, but since I had other obligations on this trip, I am so happy for these few days. It wasn't enough to follow some of the species and really spend the time needed to get amazing footage, but it was definitely enough to give me an unforgettable experience.

✦ WHO I AM.

My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer.
I am a Nikon Ambassador and I work as an ILCP photographer.
Nature conservation is very close to my heart.
I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions.

5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

Grab some of our gear

Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching!

Grab a Wolters World Shirt

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.

We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.

Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

Pixel 8 Pro - Photographer's Review

The Google Pixel 8 Pro probably has the best cameras of any Android smartphone out right now. The RAW files paired with the 50mp mode from all 3 cameras produce photos that look like they were shot from a real camera. However, it's not perfect and there are still some critical drawbacks that prevent it from being perfect. Watch the full video for some street and travel POV footage, as well as some pixel peeping in lightroom!

Secrets to Perfect Wildlife Photography w/ Pro Photographer & Author Dan M Lee - Exploring Alaska

Professional photographer Dan M Lee specializes in adventure, outdoor, and wildlife photography, and often leads tours and photo workshops to Alaska. Outex underwater housing co-founder JR joined him recently for an epic adventure covering 1,600 miles of Alaskan territory.
We travelled to Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Talkeetna, Denali, and Valdez, using a variety of transportation over land, sea, and air.

This short video summary highlights one of our boat outings from the port of Seward, on the southern side of the Kenai peninsula, just outside Kenai Fjords National Park.

Dan used the Outex waterproof housings to protect all of the camera gear during the outing. Alaska weather is notoriously fickle and can change dramatically in a manner of hours. We were using a Sony A9II and A7R4, coupled with 70-200mm f/2.8 and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3, as well as a Nikon Z7II with a 24-70mm f/2.8. The video shows the Outex Pro Kits used for all 3 cameras, with the Regular size for the Nikon camera/lens combo, and the Pro Kit Large with Tripod Add-On accessories for the A7R/70-200mm and the Pro Kit Large for the A9/200-600.

There have been over 500 subscribers in the last 5 days which is insane and awesome. It's largely due to BvS and his competition which you will hear the winner of shortly I'm sure, as well as the other 9 winners and the big prize to join us all in Bali!! So go and check out Brendan's Channel ( to see what's happening there and when the announcements will be made.

As for this channel and video, CALLING all Photographers and Videographers!! If you're interested in upping your skills and beginning to make money with your photo and video work, then this should be good for you. I have been running a professional photography and video business for the last 4 years and throughout that time have worked some really normal jobs within the industry. This is one of them. Event & Portraiture Photography.

The great thing about this job is the client. The client is a group of super talented tourism consultant professional based in the German speaking travel market of Europe. They are Tourismuszukunft and I am happy to be one of their many partners. Check the consultancy group here.

Every year they help run a small conference / bar camp called TourismsCamp ( This year it was held in North Germany and Nellie and I were asked to come and help document the experience with photos and short video clips. It was an amazing weekend and this video highlights some of that plus a lot more.

One of the biggest steps in becoming a professional photographer is finding work and maintaining good client relations. We touch on both of those key points here.
