Queen Victoria Market Melbourne: Street food & shopping guide

Queen Victoria Market is a must-visit site for anyone travelling to Melbourne. It's full of colour, atmosphere and the most delicious array of food from across the world. But it had a macabre beginning. I taste my way through the market and explore its many sections - from the delicatessen and seafood halls to its street food, cafes and surprising retail aisles. I also explore some of the market's little-known history.

TRANSCRIPT

how far 10 dollars can take you
and we've got a few different situations
different places that we are going to go shop
and see exactly what you can buy with a 10 dollar note
ok let's start off at a 7 eleven
how much do you think we can get here for just 10 dollars?
Only 1 dollars
1 dollar
i am so used to saying plural for money
so far it's only 1 dollar
Although not as cheap as other cities around the world 7 eleven is still pretty fun and you can grab some bargains
so what can you get at 7 eleven for only 10 dollars
we're going to show you today
1 dollar coffee
2 dollar popcorn
2 dolalr muffin
so that's with the coffee it's two dollars or otherwise it's 3 dollars
but also you can get slurpies for a dollar
you can get bananas or apples for a dollar if you're thinking you want to be a bit more healthy
but the whole point is at a 7 eleven
it can get a bad name for certain things but you can get quite a lot for 10 dollars at a 7 eleven
so definitely drop by and you can go a long way
this is only 5 dollars
just this, so you can double that
each of you can have that in your hand
10 dollars
10 dollars can actually go a long way in Melbourne
Breadtop is another good classic one where you can get quite cheap bakery yummy snacks
and for 10 dollars you can get quite a few different things
so with 10 dollars Cotton On is actually a really good fashion store here in Australia
you can actually get a few items for 10 dollars
Cotton On is really good if you've only got 10 dollars
Because not only do they have cheap clothing as it is but there's always a lot of sales going on
so you can get a pair of thongs, some short, a shirt all for 10
This coffee was about 3 dollars 80
So that's very usual in this local cafe
So it's one part of that 10 dollars
So coffee is quite cheap in Australia if you compare it to other cities in the world
it can be five dollars or 6 dollars
but here in Australia it's usually at about the 3.80 mark
but for this size absoulutely you can get it for 3 dollars, 3 dollars 50
So usually coffee doesn't go higher than 4.50 thats the cap
not many people would pay 5 dollars for a coffee
unless it's a very specialised one like a Matcha Latte
or if you ask for additional extras like decaf or soy
or you know some kind of special milk
but just for a regular latte you are looking at under 4.50
everytime you are good to go
Banana bread is so common in Australia
this one is 4 dollars 50
that's a very common price
about the 4 dollar mark
it doesn't usually go above 5
so it's a really good cheap breakfast to have in Australia
so with the coffee at 3.80
with the banana bread at 4.50
you're under 10
you're good to go
Now to follow Rachel through a Big W
lets see what she can find
this is our first back to school video
you will never see that again
anyway so why i came to Big W is because i want to show you the prices for stationery
so this one is just 90 cents for a small note
quite thin but 90 cents
and also you may need some pencils
something like this all in all it's about 2 dollars 80
so with 90 cents i have
i've probably spent 3 dollars 70
those things
i mean it just depends how fancy you want to be
i usually don't buy this i buy
here we go
2 dollars simple filing folder
but this is very old school
i think we shouldn't use this kind of thing
you actually should ruin your paper to put that in here
it's just a bit
i don't know but they are the cheapest ones so what can you do
Dymocks has a wide variety of books
and although not the cheapest bookstore it does contain some bargain books to buy
todays mission is to find a book under 10 dollars
follow me
we are in the bargain section here now and you can definitely get books for under 10 dollars
but also in Melbourne you can get book stores that are every book for 6 dollars
which are really handy but also here is a good spot
we went to Dymocks because it's one of the most popular book stores
