CANCUN, MEXICO | 5 Must-Do Day Trips from Cancun

Cancun is considered to be the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. At this beautiful destination, you’ll find spectacular white-sand beaches, a turquoise sea, and a vibrant nightlife, which attracts millions of tourists every year. But unfortunately most tourists don’t venture out of the famed Hotel Zone. If you’re staying in Cancun and looking for unique activities to do, we highly recommend you head out of the town at least once during your trip! Cancun is the perfect location to explore nearby towns, Mayan ruins, and natural attractions from. In this video we highlight 5 must-do day trips from Cancun:

5. Río Lagartos & Las Coloradas

Located about 3.5 hours from Cancun, Río Lagartos and Las Coloradas make for a great day trip. Río Lagartos is basically a fishing village located along the Gulf Coast. It’s filled with wildlife and pristine nature. You can explore its protected biosphere by taking a boat tour where you will observe hundreds of flamingos, crocodiles, and pelicans. Right outside the biosphere, you can find the pink water lagoons called “Las Coloradas”. These pink lakes are formed by salt mines and make for stunning pictures.

☑️ Book tour:

4. Tulum

From the Tulum Ruins to the unique Kaan Luum lagoon, the Calavera Cenote and the Gran Cenote, you have plenty of options here. Tulum is a 2 hour drive away from Cancun and can be easily reached by local collectivo or the tourist ADO bus. Alternatively, you can also book a day tour to get here.

☑️ Book tour:

3. Bacalar

Famous for its immense deep-blue lake, Bacalar is located in the south of Quintana Roo, near the border of Belize. It takes about 4 hours to get here by tour bus, so ideally spend more than 1 day here if you can. However, it’s still doable to get there and then back to Cancun in a day if you get an early start. It’s best explored during a boat tour, so you can experience and swim in the different colors and cenotes in the lake.

☑️ Book tour:

2. Isla Mujeres

Only a 20 minute boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the closest day trip recommendation on our list. The island is a beautiful, peaceful paradise known for its white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. It’s also a popular scuba diving and snorkeling destination, with the impressive MUSA Underwater Museum of Art and the beautiful Manchones Reef near the shore.

☑️ Book tour:

1. Chichén Itzá

Our favorite day trip from Cancun is to Chichen Itza, one of the 7 World Wonders. This archeological site is located about 3 hours away from Cancun by tour bus. Chichen Itza was once a thriving community of Mayan people and boasts an interesting history that you can’t miss.

CANCUN, MEXICO | 10 Best Things To Do in & Around Cancun

Cancun is located in the northeast on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico and borders the Caribbean Sea. It is known for its white sand beaches, turquoise sea, numerous resorts, and nightlife. In this video we’ll show you the top 10 things to do in and around Cancun.

10. Cancun Scenic Tower
Take a ride up to an altitude of 262 feet, or 80 meters.

9. Visit the downtown
The 9th best thing to do in Cancun is to visit the downtown area. Downtown Cancun offers a great taste of local culture, with delicious street food, small shops, and cute parks.

8. Swim at nearby cenotes
At number 8 we have a truly refreshing and unique experience: swimming in the nearby cenotes. The Yucatan Peninsula in general is well-known for its cenotes.

7. Relax at the Hotel Zone
The Hotel Zone is the primary tourist area, filled with high-rise hotels, shops, bars, and restaurants. It is a 15-mile, or 24 km strip of beautiful white-sand beaches and deep blue water.

6. Cancun nightlife
Most nightclubs are located in the Hotel Zone and can get pretty wild. Coco Bongo is the most popular club in Cancun, featuring acrobats, cover bands and DJs.

5. Explore “local” Playa Tortugas
Located along a more quiet part of the Hotel Zone, Playa Tortugas offers a more local experience, with a relaxed atmosphere and clean sands. It’s also better for swimming, as the water is calm.

4. Isla Mujeres Day Tour
The fourth best thing to do in Cancún is to go on a day trip to the nearby Isla Mujeres. Only a 20 minute boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a peaceful paradise known for its white-sand beaches.

☑️Book Isla Mujeres Day Tour:

3. Hidden gem “Isla Blanca”
About 12.5miles or 20km north of the city of Cancún sits the stunning Isla Blanca. You can get here by local collectivo, which leaves near the Farmacia Canto, at the corner of Avenida López Portillo and Calle siete about 3 times a day.

2. Day trip to Chichén Itzá
A trip to Cancun isn’t complete without visiting one of the 7 World Wonders. Chichén Itzá is located about 3 hours away from Cancun by car or tour bus. It was once a vibrant city with a diverse population of Mayan people extending well into the tens of thousands.

☑️ Book Chichen Itzá Day Tour:

1. Dive/snorkel at Underwater Museum & Reef
Located only 30 minutes away from Cancún, this Underwater Museum is home to 500 life-size sculptures that are used to promote coral, algae, and other marine life.

☑️ Book Snorkel Tour:

☑️ Book Scuba Diving Tour:

Best Beach Clubs of Tulum Mexico| Things to Do in Tulum

Reviews of La Zebra and Caleta Tankah in Tulum Mexico during COVID-19. If you are traveling to Mexico I can recommend both of these family-friendly beach clubs in Tulum , Mexico.

While the beaches were mostly closed in Mexico, there are a few loopholes for resorts and beach clubs that allow the use of the beach if you are staying at one of these properties. During our stay, we swam with the Turtles in Akumal Bay. We also visited the beach clubs of

Caleta Tankah and La Zebra in Tulum.

The beach club of La Zebra was definitely the more upscale of the two clubs. It is a part of a very nice small boutique hotel with an excellent restaurant. The beach club is super kid-friendly. They have a wide expansive beach and playground area for the kids to kill time. The things that stood out the most for me at La Zebra were the excellent bathrooms that were super clean and private, the food and drinks from the restaurant and bar, and the wide expansive beach. The palapas were also very nice, and I would recommend that you get one with chairs and not a bed. The palapas also had power built-in, which was just a great touch.

All in all, we had a blast on both beach days. I would definitely recommend both places. Don’t expect great food at Caleta Tankah, but the drinks are cold, and some were 2/1. La Zebra was all-around excellent, but I can see it being crowded before Caleta Tankah because it’s in the heart of Tulum’s resort district.
