With the support of the U.S. government, Panama issues a declaration of independence from Colombia. Colombian Independence Day in Guatapé

Colombian Independance Day is every July 20th and recently I was lucky to have experienced it in the beautiful town of Guatapé. Only a 2 hour bus ride from Medellin's Terminal del Norte, it is a popular tourist destination with a history that deserves reading about and scenery lush with vibrant colors. I recommend you visit and the best time would be during a weekday to avoid traffic and long lines to ascend the infamous Piedra del Peñol.

history of Colombia

Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Muisca and Quimbaya. In 1499, Spanish explorer Rodrigo de Bastidas became the first European to explore the Colombian coast. Colombia gained independence from Spain in 1819 under the leadership of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Colombia experienced political instability and conflicts. In the 1960s, a civil war known as the Colombian Conflict began, lasting for over 50 years. During the 1980s and 1990s, drug cartels, such as Pablo Escobar's Medellín Cartel, were a major problem in Colombia. In recent years, Colombia has made significant progress in reducing crime and improving its economy. Colombia is known for its rich biodiversity, with over 10% of the world's species found within its borders. The Colombian government signed a peace deal with the largest rebel group, FARC, in 2016, officially ending the civil war. Colombia's capital city, Bogotá, is the second highest capital in South America, sitting at an altitude of 8,612 feet. Colombia is a popular tourist destination, known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine.
