TIMOR LESTE

East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until 28 November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by the Indonesian military, and was declared as the country's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent, decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially Fretilin) and the Indonesian military. East Timor - Officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste,Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a country in Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km2 (5,794 sq mi)
Indonesian occupation (1975–1999) Indonesia's occupation of East Timor was marked by violence and brutality. A detailed statistical report prepared for the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor cited a minimum bound of 102,800 conflict-related deaths in the period 1974–1999, namely, approximately 18,600 killings and 84,200 excess deaths from hunger and illness, with an estimated figure based on Portuguese, Indonesian and Catholic Church data of approximately 200,000 deaths. The East Timorese guerrilla force (Forças Armadas da Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste, Falintil) fought a campaign against the Indonesian forces from 1975 to 1998. José Ramos-Horta, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner, second President of East Timor The 1991 Dili Massacre was a turning point for the independence cause and an East Timor solidarity movement grew in Portugal, the Philippines, Australia, and other Western countries. Following the resignation of Indonesian President Suharto, a UN-sponsored agreement between Indonesia and Portugal allowed for a UN-supervised popular referendum in August 1999. A clear vote for independence was met with a punitive campaign of violence by East Timorese pro-integration

Explore Timor Island | Adventure Travel Guide | Kupang, Kefa, Atambua&Timor Leste

Hey guys, welcome back to Lion on the Road, a different way to bring travels into your life. In this Vlog we gonna Explore Timor ISLAND (the Indonesian side) on the road & from the drone. Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor on the eastern part and Indonesia on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District.
Timor and its offshore islands such as Atauro, a former place of exile increasingly known for its beaches and coral, as well as Jaco along with Wetar and the other Barat Daya Islands to the northeast constitute the Timor and Wetar deciduous forests ecoregion. The natural vegetation was tropical dry broadleaf forests with an undergrowth of shrubs and grasses supporting a rich wildlife[citation needed]. However much of the original forest has been cleared for farming,[citation needed] especially on the coasts of Timor and on the smaller islands like Atauro. Apart from one large block in the centre of Timor only patches remain.[citation needed] This ecoregion is part of the Wallacea area with a mixture of plants and animals of Asian and Australasian origin; it lies in the western part of Wallacea, in which Asian species predominate

The earliest historical record about Timor island is the 14th-century Nagarakretagama, Canto 14, that identifies Timur as an island within Majapahit's realm. Timor was incorporated into ancient Javanese, Chinese and Indian trading networks of the 14th century as an exporter of aromatic sandalwood, slaves, honey and wax, and was settled by both the Portuguese, in the end of the 16th century, and the Dutch, based in Kupang, in the mid-17th century.

As the nearest island with a European settlement at the time, Timor was the destination of William Bligh and seamen loyal to him following the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. It was also where survivors of the wrecked HMS Pandora, sent to arrest the Bounty mutineers, landed in 1791 after that ship sank in the Great Barrier Reef.

The island has been politically divided in two parts for centuries. The Dutch and Portuguese fought for control of the island until it was divided by treaty in 1859, but they still did not formally resolve the matter of the boundary until 1912. West Timor, was known as Dutch Timor until 1949 when it became Indonesian Timor, a part of the nation of Indonesia which was formed from the old Netherlands East Indies; while East Timor was known as Portuguese Timor, a Portuguese colony until 1975. It includes the exclave of Oecussi-Ambeno in West Timor.
Kupang was an important port and trading point during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. There are ruins and remnant signs of the colonial presence in the city.

Representatives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) approached Kupang in 1613 after having conquered the Portuguese fort on Solor. At this time the place and its hinterland was governed by a raja of the Helong tribe which claimed descent from Ceram in Maluku. Kupang was well situated for strategic control over parts of Timor, since it was possible to monitor shipping activities to the south coast of the island. Moreover, the Koinino River provided fresh water for the inhabitants

The buses ???? are lot cheaper if you speak Portuguese/ Indonesian but if you only speak English there's a chance they could take advantage of you.

Timor tour
3 languages (Tetum, Portuguese creole???????? )

feijão e ovo for breakfast is good with coffee. If you want to try traditional Timorese food, there’s a buffet for $6. If you want to help local families makes living you can buy for $2

As mentioned, timor leste is a developing nation so you have the UN and other NGO

In the morning you can visit the local market
And try the katupa before playing ⚽️ with the locals. They have imported Portuguese snacks and beer ???? along with ASEAN countries Timor food ???? with penpal I met from InterPals.

East Timor | Trip | Country | Cities | Travel #022

In 1975 Indonesian military forces (the TNI) invaded the Portuguese colony of East Timor, then under the administration of the pro-independence Fretilin Party (the Revolutionary Front for the Independent East Timor), which had just unilaterally declared independence. From the outset, the invasion was strongly resisted by the heavily out-gunned and outnumbered Fretilin armed forces. The invaders treated the local population harshly, indiscriminately killing hundreds of mostly civilian Dili residents in the first two weeks of the occupation.

What do you imagine when you hear the word Galápagos? If you're interested in booking this tour (or one similar), click this link for 5% off your booking:

We remember first reading about this island sanctuary, a place that has been undisturbed for millennia and overflowing with fearless life forms due to having evolved without human interference. But what the books fail to mention is that you truly have to experience this paradise in person to fully understand how spectacular it is. Come along on a Galapagos cruise to discover endemic species like the massive land tortoises, swim with penguins and playful sea lions, dive with hammerheads and spotted eagle rays, and carefully step around more iguanas than you could ever count as we explore the islands.

Ke Timor Leste Via Darat

Halo Timor Leste! Kami datang.

Timor Leste menjadi tujuan utama perjalanan Keluarga Kusmajadi.

Timor Leste kini tengah membangun. Infrastruktur tengah dibangun di mana-mana. Mereka menggandeng Indonesia, Australia serta China.

Sabiya dan Hakim sempat protes ketika berkunjung ke Museum Resistante, atau Museum Perjuangan Rakyat Timor Leste. Sebab, beberapa materi yang ditampilkan bersifat satu sisi saja: pandangan rakyat Timor Leste. Seolah-olah Indonesia selalu menjadi bad guy.

Ikuti petualangan kami berikut.
