Kenya 1950's. Village life. Film 9027

Kenya 1950's. Kenya and village life and public health
Kenya and village life and public health
Overhead shots of : Lake Victoria and adjoining land; a town Kericho in Kenya' 60 miles from the lake and the tea fields of Kericho and other tea-growing areas. Long shot of seven village huts.
A large group of men and women stand in rows with their pickaxes, as the white manager with his two native assistants , one with clipboard and pen, makes his way down and in between their ranks, counting as he goes along. Close up of men in shorts and sandals standing in a row with their digging implements standing in front of them. The lines of workers break up as they set off to work. In the foreground, the manager discusses matters with his two assistants.
A bare field is dug up by lines of workers, preparing for tea cultivation. A herd of cattle make their way through the entrance to a ranch, followed by two men. In the forest men cut down tall trees and saw fallen timbers in half.
A truck drives in front of one of Kericho's factories. Shots of one of Kericho's tea processing factories. A generating plant in the hills that provides factories with power. Men maintaining machinery inside the plant. Two men on Ladders working on the outside of the factory while two co- workers hold their ladder steady. A man with a bale of straw climbs up the large thatched hutch roof. Men work to complete the new hospital building, applying finishing touches to the roof beams. Five men work on the early stages of building a workers house, in the traditional style of the village hut. Series of close-up shots of African men at work. Two men build a wall, man with hat on the roof hammers on to his chisel to make a groove in the roof beam, a man milks a cow.
A Sikh cranks a motor outside a corrugated iron building, watched by two colleagues and white manager.
White manager and head man in conversation while behind them workers dig away in the field. The manager looks at his watch, the head man looks up at the sun. The head man waves his arm up and down, a signal for the workers to stop. Long shot of workers leaving field with a black car in the foreground. Manager and headman climb into the car and drive up the track.
A worker in the pay office puts his open palmed hands together to receive his wages - 25 shillings in notes, East African Currency and some coins from the white cashier.
Workers hold bags and cans out to collect their rations of milk and ground maize. Woman carrying small child walks up to the window counter, half covered with iron bars, to receive a cut of meat from the butcher. Natives queue outside the village shop window counter from where a woman purchases a bottle of fizzy pop.
A little girl in a white dress runs across the grass amongst the traditional village huts. Another village has huts more modern in design. Various shots of workers' cottages follow. Close up shot of villages sitting outside a brick made hut talking to a small child. A kneeling woman washes an upright child outside one of the huts. Four men do various household chores outside their shared cottage, cooking, peeling potatoes. Close up of the 'hygiene boy' a sort of public health official. He talks to the worker whose job it is to cut the grass in the village, instructing him to cut in between and around the village huts. The grass cutting machine is pulled by two oxen while the worker walks behind, whip in hand. A man carries a basket of rubbish to an oxen-driven refuse collection cart, while the 'hygiene boy' and a uniformed cart driver salute each other. The 'hygiene boy' walks alongside the open rainwater drains. He inspects the progress of a latrine worker, sweeping out one of the corrugated iron toilets. A family sits outside its hut, while workers finish spraying the germicide inside. The 'hygiene boy' crouching down over a static pool of water, puts a ladle into the water then puts it into a small glass bottle, which will be later analysed as part of the anti-malaria precautions. A further precaution is the spraying of a larvae killing oil over the pool. The camera pans across a line of workers who are being distributed anti-malarial tablets by the hygiene boy. A woman and a child standing in a doorway receive and swallow their anti-malarial tablets, In an office sitting at his table is the white welfare officer with two assistants. Close up of medical officer examining the ear of a patient. One of the medical assistants looks through a microscope. Another drops samples into a test tube.
Villagers sit outside the medical department building, awaiting treatment for minor ailments. At the entrance of this building, a table with chairs has been set up to receive these patients. Malaria threat.

Is this the Best Place to Eat in Nairobi?

When researching where to eat in Nairobi, Carnivore was always at or near the top of every list. I've never been one to pass on all-you-can-eat meat, I knew I had to go. After a day of walking the streets of Nairobi, we worked up enough of an appetite to take on 7 species of animals.

Maasai Village Tour in Kenya

While in the Maasai Mara we stopped and visited a Maasai Village. We pad them $10 per person for a tour of their village and this helps supplement their income. They showed us how they live and answered questions about their village. The chief's son showed us around. He was next in line to be leader of the village. We saw the men dance and then the women dance. Near the end he pulls out a cel phone and smiles... Noone was expecting that.

MY FIRST TIME BOWLING/VILLAGE MARKET/ Bridgit Moshel

Swahili market on Lake Victoria, Africa, early 1900s

Hamer Tribe | Village Market in Dimeka

What I've learned in just my first few days in Ethiopia is that the diversity of Africans here was way beyond my wildest imagination. There are 80 tribes or ethnic groups in Ethiopia, the Oromo people, Amhara, Somali, Tigraway, Sidama, Gurage and the Wolayta tribes make up the majority of tribes here. What's more amazing is how diverse these groups of people are, anywhere from skin complexions, style, religion or non-religion to mannerisms. It's something for the world to take in and learn, all these different ethnic groups get along and merge well together as if I hopped into the future where all of humanity will be mixed groups of people from around the world.

The particular tribe in the photos are the Hamer tribe from Omo Valley region. I spent a few days with them and I could never have met friendlier people in my life (the Samburu People are also incredibly friendly people). We spoke of each other's worlds over some shisha in this tucked away home in the village (shisha has been banned recently in Ethiopia but people still use it freely). I got to learn their perspectives of how cultures are losing their way in this ever evolving world that's facing modernization everywhere. Just 3 years ago they told me that phones did not even exist in their villages.

I don't usually have regrets but I were to have one it is that I did not spend enough time with these people, my stay was short and unfortunately not enough photos and videos were taken. However I'm absolutely visiting again, these people make you feel so at home. Also I have to thank a good friend of mine Solomon Gezu who helped me out and got us connected with these tribes. To visit Omo Valley he's the guy to know: This is his contact: goethiopiatours@gmail.com

I will be staying in Addis Ababa for 2 weeks to raise funds to continue my expedition before walking. If you feel inclined to help me out to continue discovering Africa by foot please visit my fund me site at

Nairobi is Kenya’s bustling capital city, often used as a jumping-off point for safari trips. In addition to its urban core, the city has Nairobi National Park, a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to giraffes, zebras and lions. Next to it is a well-regarded elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
