TRAVEL THE GAMBIA | THE SMILING COAST OF AFRICA | Things to do ????????

Travel The Gambia, the smiling coast of Africa, shows a lot of things to do, in this amazing country.

Look here for a little explication of why Africa's 'smiling coast' is officially referred to as 'The' Gambia
The Gambia is the official name of the smallest West African country. Yes, there is the need to put a definite article ‘The’ in front of Gambia.
Gambia – referred to as the smiling coast of Africa – shares that ‘pleasure’ with ‘The Bahamas.’ An English language expert, David Crystal explained why ‘The Gambia’ is ‘The Gambia.’
In an interview with the BBC, Crystal disclosed that two reasons came to play in arriving at that official position.
The Portuguese who first explored the country named it after the river known as ‘The River Gambia.’ The Portuguese thus named it ‘The Gambia.’ [In Portuguese A Gâmbia] So when Britain took over, they maintained that name.
A year to the attainment of independence in 1964, the then Prime Minister officially sought the consent of the Permanent Committee on geographical names based in the UK to keep the official title of ‘The Gambia.’
The reason was because of Zambia, The Gambia didn’t want to be confused with their Southern African brothers, Zambia seeing that only the first alphabets in their names are different.
The Commission which looks after naming of geographical locations in the world accented to the request.

THE GAMBIA [ WEST AFRICA ] Serrekunda Market..2018 Walking through the market

The former village of Serrekunda market town (also spelt Serekunda) is the Gambia's largest town, and its name means the 'home of the Sayer family' (Sayer Kunda), named after its 19th century founder, Sayerr Jobe, a Wolof royal from Koki, Senegal. Serrekunda has a population of about 390,000, and is 13km to the southwest of the capital, Banjul. It is actually made up of nine villages which have merged into an urban sprawl, that incorporates the villages of Latrikunda, Dippa Kunda, Bundung and London Corner, and effectively forms the Kanifing LGA, in the Kombo St. Mary District. The urban settlement is about 3 kilometres inland from the coastal resorts of Kololi and Kotu.

Banjul in Gambia, capital, vacation destination and operator business market

Banjul is the second largest city in and capital of Gambia. The city is on an island, which has constrained its size - population is only 40,000. Consequently much of the population now is based on the mainland between the airport and the city. The main tourist and business centres are around Bakau, Fajara, Kotu and Serrekunda.
Banjul has become very popular as a package holiday destination with British and other European visitors. Travel company 'The Gambia Experience' has been the market leader, but other operators are increasing their offerings too.

Get in[edit]
Banjul International Airport also known as Yundum International (IATA: BJL, ICAO: GBYD) is the international airport of Banjul. There are many direct flights to Banjul from some parts of Europe and Africa. Direct flights to Conakry, Dakar, Freetown, Amsterdam, Lagos, Brussels, Bissau, London, Accra, Abidjan, Madrid, Barcelona etc. For the intrepid tourist, the Plymouth - Banjul Challenge [1] ends here as well.
From Senegal[edit]
Take a Sept-Place, a minivan or a bus to the border to Gambia. From the station you have to walk around one kilometer to the border officials. If you don't want to walk you can take a motorcycle or a donkey for a few cefa. after you passed the Senegalese and the Gambian border officials, you can take a shared taxi or minivan to Barra, cost around 30 Dalasi. From Barra take the Ferry to Banjul, for 25 Dalasi. The ferry takes around one hour. If you are coming from the Casamance region, you can take a Sept-Place to Banjul.
Get around[edit]
Most hotels will have a selection of green taxis, which have fixed prices to the most popular destinations. Bicycles are also available for rental. Car hire is available from Avis and AB, both of which are based at the SeneGambia Hotel. Car hire will cost about 1500 Dalasi/day for a small car.

About Gambia: The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa and is surrounded by Senegal, except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean. The Gambia is situated on both sides of the lower reaches of the Gambia River, the nations namesake, which flows through the centre of the Gambia and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of 10,689 square kilometres. Banjul is the Gambian capital and the countrys largest metropolitan area. The largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama. The Gambia shares historical roots with many other West African nations in the slave trade, which was the key factor in the placing and keeping of a colony on the Gambia River, first by the Portuguese, during which era it was known as A Gâmbia. Later, on 25 May 1765, the Gambia was made a part of the British Empire when the government formally assumed control, establishing the Gambia Colony and Protectorate. In 1965, the Gambia gained independence under the leadership of Dawda Jawara, who ruled until Yahya Jammeh seized power in a bloodless 1994 coup. Adama Barrow became the Gambias third president in January 2017, after defeating Jammeh in the December 2016 elections. Jammeh initially accepted the results, then refused to accept them, which triggered a constitutional crisis and military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States, resulting in his exile. Serekunda (proper: Sayerr Kunda or Sere Kunda, Arabic: سيريكوندا‎, sometimes spelled Serrekunda) is the largest urban centre in The Gambia. It is situated close to the Atlantic coast, 13 km (8 mi) south-west of the capital, Banjul, and is formed of nine villages which have grown together into a larger urban area. The Gambia 2018 - Family visit/vacation (shot on iPhone X 4K 60fps & 1080 120fps)

This was one of the most impressive journeys i’ve taken so far. Along with my girlfriend and her sister we have visited The Gambia in the beginning of 2018. Everything was new to me but their family and all the people I’ve met there made me feel at home. I have visited Indonesia, Thailand and Morocco so far but this was not comparable. We slept in the compound surrounded by family and people who where good-hearted. The whole trip was a true blessing and this video I made reminds me of the all the good moments we’ve had over there.

Songs in the video are:
1. Jammu Africa by Ismaël Lo
(
2. Akanamali by Sun-El Musician ft. Samthing Soweto
(

I’ve bought both songs at the iTunes store and there will be no money generated on this video.

This video was shot on the IPhone X 4k 60fps and upscaled slow motion 1080p 120fps.

Gambia 2017 - The Smiling Coast of Africa ✈

Welcome to the smiling coast of Africa, Gambia 2017 February.

A big thanks to all the people that we've met on our journey for the great service, hospitality, lovely vibes and genuine kindness.
Made a lot of friends and made memories that will live on forever in our hearts. What a wonderful country and even more amazing people who live in it. :)

- If you’re interested in visiting Gambia a fantastic place to stay at is Bakotu Hotel located in Kotu, 40 min from Banjul airport. It is peaceful, surrounded by jungle and close to the beach.

Gambia travel guide - the best of The Gambia beyond the beach

Discovering the best of The Gambia on my short trip to the country in December - and finding there's far more than winter sun, with history, culture and everyday life to see in mainland Africa's smallest country. On my holiday with The Gambia Experience, I watched Gambian wrestling, traced the history of the slave trade, spotted crocodiles and kayaked through mangroves.

My trip was courtesy of The Gambia Experience - all opinions, and decision to make this video are my own. More posts at
