Differences Between USA ???????? & New Zealand ???????? Before Moving To New Zealand | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Need a 2022 Calendar? Get yours here:

Join us for another fun New Zealand vs. America video where Chantal discusses the biggest differences between the two countries.

The small nation of NZ is unique in many ways, to say the least. And maybe that’s exactly what makes it so appealing for tourists and people moving to the country.

So, without further ado, let’s take it away!

Living in America, we were used to everything being open 24/7. Well, surprise, surprise - not in New Zealand. Of course, there are a few places that work late hours, especially in bigger cities, but going into the many small towns and villages, you won’t find a lot of stores or restaurants open late.

Since we move around a lot, the girls noticed the absence of an American classic at the gas stations - brain-freezing slushies! On the other hand, you can find an amazing cup of coffee around almost every corner.

A major difference between the countries is that America is missing a universal healthcare system like the one NZ is so proud of having. Unlike in the US, here in NZ healthcare is publicly funded and managed by the government.

When it comes to school and education, there are also massive differences from the uniforms to their all-boys and all-girls schools. We made an entire video dedicated to these and more at

Driving through NZ is a total adventure. Forget about 4-lane highways and huge traffic jams and get ready for picturesque scenery and narrow bridges. And don’t worry about restrooms - they have plenty of them in every little town - clean, and free of charge!

Another unusual thing we noticed in NZ (and in a few other countries) is the power switches. Even though we are not sure of their purpose, we still need to switch them on to use electricity.

Going into nature, we were amazed by how outdoorsy Kiwis are. There are so many activities you can enjoy, but they take hiking to the next level especially when you pair it with camping. Yes, that’s right. You can hit the great walks and then bunk together with other people in one of the many huts placed along the trails.

And if you are a tourist, don’t worry about being injured. Besides the fact that there are almost zero predators in New Zealand like bears and snakes, they also have ACC insurance to cover any possible accident.

Coming from places like North America and Europe, we were literally shocked at how welcoming and easy-going New Zealanders are.

On top of it, they all seem to be environmentally conscious. Single-use plastic is simply not available, and there is an action plan in motion to completely eliminate gasoline cars. And while still discussing cars, it’s a good idea to know that, in NZ, cars drive on the left side.

Another thing that made us feel like living in reverse, were the seasons. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s hard to adjust to winters in July.

As you know, we are all native English speakers, and so are New Zealanders, but we still had a hard time understanding their unique slang at first. Luckily, after a while, we started adopting the words and loving them!

NZ doesn’t come close to North America when it comes to harsh weather conditions, and maybe that’s the reason why, in most houses, you won’t find a centralized cooling or heating system.

And because of the same pleasant weather, you will also see Kiwis wearing shorts all year round. We guess, they just don’t feel the cold.

Overall the difference between NZ and the USA makes both countries very unique.

Differences Between Schools in America ???????? and New Zealand ???????? | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Need a 2022 calendar? Get yours here:

Join Chantal and Tara from KiwiAmericans as they discuss the differences between school systems in New Zealand and the US.

The first and probably most unusual thing is that children here aren’t allowed to actually start school before the day of their 5th birthday. Once they turn five at any point of the school year, they can join a classroom or wait for the start of the next school year.

Talking about school years, they run from year 1 through year 13 and are divided into primary school, middle school, and high school/college.

Students can choose to end their education in year 12, but year 13 is mandatory for everyone who wants to attend university.

Unlike in the US and Canada where students have to be accepted to college or university, in New Zealand, passing year 13 actually grants your entrance.

Another interesting fact is that the first year of UE in New Zealand is free. Unfortunately, many don’t go forward and according to Tara, making year 4 free instead of year 1 would be a lot more incentive.

Circling back to primary school, New Zealand’s teachers have an unconventional way of handling homework. While they are still present as part of the curriculum, after-school assignments are optional. So, following a long day at work or in school, Kiwis prioritize family time over doing homework.

Having said that, New Zealand has been quite successful at encouraging young minds to explore their talents. Their philosophy that promotes learning as a life-long process helps students develop a love for growth and progress.

A common classroom on the island can seem pretty chaotic to most non-locals. If you wonder why, it’s because they believe in growing and learning through actions, so children are encouraged to move and express themselves freely in open-concept classrooms.

Students usually take up sports such as rugby, cricket, kayaking, and swimming but they also have to participate in choir singing and school plays. This allows them to get exposed to as many activities as possible so they can discover their talents and interests.

Another big part of the school experience in New Zealand is uniforms. In many schools they are mandatory, especially on school trips or games. Uniforms are also a matter of pride as they represent the school you belong to and what it stands for.

It’s interesting that most schools here are either all-boys or all-girls schools, but mixed schools are also available in more populated areas. One thing is for sure, boys and girls act totally different when there is no pressure coming from the opposite sex.

As parents, when it comes to our children, safety is everything. Children in New Zealand are allowed to walk or bike to school and back, and they don’t receive active shooter training as there are none. Schools are a safe zone! They don’t even require medical checkups before enrolment.

On top of it, future education may look quite different, as online and homeschooling are evolving fast and in so many directions, particularly after COVID-19.

Hopefully, we gave you a good grasp on how education in New Zealand works, in case you are with children and planning on moving to the islands.

Enjoy the video!

New Zealand Healthcare Vs the USA . How Does it Compare?

In this week's show, Liz chats with Adam about the New Zealand healthcare system. Adam moved to New Zealand from the USA with his family in 2022. Because he is a type 1 diabetic, Adam was particularly concerned with how the NZ healthcare system and how it would compare to the US.
Would he be able to get his medications? How much would they cost? Would the procedure be simple? What about the cost/care/dental for kids in New Zealand?

If you have burning questions about the NZ healthcare system, then you will LOVE this episode. As always, we bring you information straight from the front line, so sit back and enjoy listening to Adam's valuable experience .

TOP 5 Differences in Real Estate USA vs NZ

I worked as a realtor in Indiana, US for almost 7 years, then moved to New Zealand to be licensed as a real estate salesperson and worked for 5 months with a prior 6 months of study and licensing.

While people are pretty much the same anywhere, the industry is drastically different in NZ from the US. Mostly due to: legislation, expectations, and common practice.

Here are my Top 5 starting with what I believe NZ real estate does better and ending with what US/Indiana real estate does better.
