As the CEO and owner of HER APPAREL, I have gone far in establishing the business with a strong clientele, employing up to 6 young Gambians and recently started construction work for HER APPAREL boutique, all of these have been achieved in just one year two months. In my quest to ensure that HER APPAREL operates well, I have suspended my pursuit of a university degree.

AFRecycle, Fatou Amirah Mambouray

The TAF StartUps under the umbrella of The TAF Africa Foundation recently concluded a 2-Day Press Conference and Pitching Competition of the best Young Gambian Entrepreneurs. Meet one of our top 10 finalist :
Afrecycle is stepping in to repair our poor waste management system and become both regional and continental leader in recycling all “trash.” From collection, processing, and marketing (for resale) of recyclable materials; to waste (actual trash) to energy processing; to the IT, data, and research production of the above.

Our base service is the collection, processing, marketing, and selling of the following recyclable materials:
1. Plastic
2. Paper & Cardboard
3. Steel
4. Glass
5. Aluminium
6. E-Waste

Second level: We will be just as instrumental in data collection and analysis for the purpose of creating accurate Municipal Solid Waste-to-Recycling reports. These reports, fit for use by the international stage, will be widely available to government agencies, companies, and the general public. The aim is to efficiently fill the data information gap in order to enable and tailor national development.

Third level: We are first and foremost advocates for renewable energies, recycling is just the first step. Aiming to lead by example, the actual “trash” (non-recyclables) will be separated from the recyclables and used to power the recycling plant- and anything it can around it. It’s called “waste-to-energy,” a process which generates electricity from combustion and fermentation. The most common form of WtE is a Biogas plant. This same process could also produce combustible fuel commodities such as methane, methanol, ethanol or synthetic fuels… the aforementioned are all derived purely from the trash that end up in our (very poorly controlled) landfills.

Recycling is merely the seed – we want a “Green Africa” or at least, “Green Gambia!” In order to achieve these goals, we are creating the template for others to follow suit.

All of our processes will be executed and monitored through the most current technologies— and capable technologically savvy youths will be hired and sufficiently trained to man the technical side of things. We are actively seeking those without the financial capital but smarts, wit, and zeal to learn and develop new trades.
