Whistling in the Wind: Preserving a Language Without Words

On La Gomera, a small island in Spain’s Canary Islands, the last speakers of a language without words reside. El Silbo, a whistled communication used in rural and isolated areas, is dying out as islanders embrace digital communication and move to cities and the mainland. Even so, El Silbo has a firm place in the island's culture. Some of La Gomera's schools are teaching the language and in 2009, UNESCO declared it as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Our friends Jungles in Paris bring us this story of whistling in the wind.

Whistling Language of La Gomera - El Silbo Gomero

Silbo Gomero, also known as el silbo ('the whistle'), is a whistled language spoken by inhabitants of La Gomera in the Canary Islands to communicate across the deep ravines and narrow valleys that radiate through the island. A speaker of Silbo Gomero is sometimes referred to in Spanish as a silbador ('whistler'). The language was declared as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity byUNESCO in 2009.

Jungles in Paris is a purpose-driven multimedia project based in New York City. We use non-fiction films, photography and more to create transporting encounters both online and offline. The aim is to get modern audiences to slow down and observe, learn about, and connect with the planet: to foster a true interconnectivity between people and place.

Prioritizing the local, the authentic, the sustainable and the timeless, we tell real stories that implicitly question the modern mode of living, and its relationship to nature in particular. The Guardian has called Jungles in Paris “one of the best independent travel magazines, while Fast Company refers to it as “a reminder that the world is still full of surprises.”

Would you believe me if I told you that somewhere in the mountains of Turkey, there's a small village called Kuskoy where ALL of its residents can speak a language that is entirely made up of WHISTLES? And every single word in the Turkish language can be translated into these unique sounds?

I recently visited Kuskoy and was completely blown away by how cool and unique this vernacular is! You really have to hear it to believe it.

As the locals told me, this whistle language was invented around 500 years ago by local farmers, who needed to communicate with their peers over the steep hills... Amazingly, the whistles can be heard up to 3 kilometers away!!
