Information:

German: Deutschschweizer Gebärdensprache, abbreviated DSGS is the primary deaf sign language of the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The language was established around 1828.

Switzerland friends confirmed there are four languages they have been using in different regions: LSF (France), ISL (Italy), DSGS (Germany), and Latin language.

I asked them how do they communicate if there are different signs? They answered, We usually communicate in International sign.

Speaking Romansh in Switzerland

Ever fascinated by rare languages, I visited the Engadin in Grisson, Switzerland where I met several native speakers of Romansch, one of the four official languages in the country. There are about 100,000 people who still speak Romansch and I was grateful for the chance to explore their native valleys in the southeast corner of Switzerland

Integrating into Swiss Public Schools | How We Learned German in Just One Year | Aufnahmeklasse

What happens if you don't know any German when you get to Switzerland, should you just give up and go to an international school and pay $30k a year in tuition? No! Don't rule out the local school system yet. In the city of Zurich, there's a specific program that helps you integrate into the local public school system, called Aufnahmeklasse (admission class). Kids spend their first year in a small class setting and focus on building their German skills. The teachers are specially trained to work with children who don't speak the language. After 9 - 12 months, most children speak German well enough to move onto the regular classes and further integrate into the local school system. In this video, we tell you about our experience in learning German in the Aufnahmeklasse.
