From the moment we entered Silver Bank, 90 miles off the shores of the Dominican Republic, there were whales EVERYWHERE. Within five minutes of going to the top deck, I saw every whale behavior possible, breaching, fin slapping, tail slapping, tail flukes in the air, blows in every direction. Not ten seconds could go by without seeing a whale and that continued through the whole week. Being out here on the Silver Bank is truly living among whales, just how we like it. The Silver Bank and surrounds yearly play host to thousands of migrating North Atlantic humpback whales. In 2005 humpback whales researchers aboard the R/V Gordon Gunther conducted an extensive population count in the region, and the results indicate that between 5000-7000 humpbacks pass through this oddly shaped, forty square mile sanctuary each winter. Indeed, research indicates that the Silver Bank contains the largest seasonal population of humpbacks in the North Atlantic Ocean, if not the world. Thank you to Craig Davis for the footage.

The warm waters of the Dominican Republic’s Silver Bank provide a wintering haven for thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales.
Topside, we witness spectacular behaviors, including mother and calf interactions. When we slip into the sea and snorkel among them, we see them spin and play, hear their haunting songs resonating through the water, and sense the power and grace of some of the most intelligent mammals on earth.
Looking out and seeing nothing but sea and sky and being in the water with the whales makes you realize just how small you are in the grand scheme of things. What a privilege to see them in their environment, something few people get to do.
Silver Bank (Spanish: Banco de la Plata) is a submerged bank in the Atlantic Ocean north of the Dominican Republic and southeast of the Territory of Turks & Caicos. It covers an area of 1,680 square kilometres (649 square miles). It is separated from Mouchoir Bank in the west by Silver Bank Passage, and from Navidad Bank in the east by Navidad Bank Passage.
Silver Bank is a shallow underwater carbonate platform that almost reaches the ocean's surface in certain areas (60 feet (18 metres) deep in the shallow parts), but is mostly submerged. In its northern reaches many coral heads reach the ocean surface, especially at low tide. Also, amongst the coral heads is the wrecked freighter Polyxeni, most of which is above the surface. Persons can board the Polyxeni only with governmental permission.

In a bit of a departure from our usual adventures, we descended upon the Dominican Republic to head to the Silver Bank for a snorkeling only trip with Humpback Whales. The overriding comment at the end was this is a trip of a lifetime! Being able to spend time in the water with these majestic creatures is a gift, one that I would recommend to any lover of the ocean.
Swimming with Whales
In early February 2019, we boarded the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II dive boat (18 persons) at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, to observe and snorkel with Humpback whales for a week on the Silver Bank (90 miles north of Puerto Plata)
Only ~800 people a year can experience this breathtaking and magical adventure (same number that attempt to climb Mt. Everest), due to the short season and tight regulations.
It was a breathtaking and memorable experience!!! Here is a snapshot of what we saw.
