Amazing Things to Do in Svalbard & Top Svalbard Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Svalbard & Top Svalbard attractions. If you are looking for the real arctic adventures close to the North Pole, visit Svalbard which is one largest untouched wilderness areas in the world.
A top starting point for travelers is Longyearbyen which belongs to the world’s northernmost settlements and is a gateway to the nature-based experiences in Svalbard. This cosmopolitan arctic town has many hotels, bars and restaurants where you can enjoy food and drinks surrounded by majestic mountains and nature. Taste grilled Atlantic cod with potato salad and beans, it is delicious.
In order to stay safe, make sure to be accompanied by a professional guide when you go outside from Longyearbyen to explore Svalbard’s arctic wilderness. You can do it driving snowmobile or go dog sledding and admire the white-covered Arctic desert at a pleasant pace powered only by your new four-legged friends. Dogs are very friendly, love extra attention and playing with them is addictive 
On your expedition you can meet one of the world’s largest carnivores - the polar bear which is also known as the King of the Arctic.
Meet also walruses resting on floating blocks of ice. However, they can be very sensitive to people being too close or boats. To observe them safely, remember to travel on organized tours with local guides.
While polar bears and walruses you can observe in Svalbard all year long, it is only from late April to August when you can see here Atlantic puffins which are easily recognizable thanks to their famous colorful bills. Did you know that their life expectancy is 30 years or even more?
Do not miss the Svalbard Global Seed Vault which is the world’s largest storage of duplicates of seed samples from the world’s crop collections. It is not open, but a guide can take you close to the entrance where seeds are stored at a temperature of -18ºC.
Another worth-while attraction is the abandoned Soviet coal mining town Pyramiden. Today a ghost town, in its heyday it used to be a settlement of over 1000 inhabitants. It is well preserved thanks to the cold climate, and it is becoming a popular tourist attraction. There is also a hotel with a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.

I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!

Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ????????????

The Ultimate Arctic Cruise! - SVALBARD EXPRESS (Hurtigruten) - Bergen to Longyearbyen Voyage

In 2023 Hurtigruten revived the Svalbard Express expedition cruise as part of its 130th anniversary celebrations. The newly refurbished MS Trollfjord takes passengers from Bergen to Longyearbyen (and back if they wish). We took the northbound leg only which allows more time in Longyearbyen and includes a wildlife cruise on the company's MS Bard vessel.
The voyage skirts the incredible coastline of Norway and makes extended stops at Åndalsnes, Træna, Stokmarknes, Tromsø and Honningsvåg as well as sailing into the famous Trollfjord. Every single day was spectacular (as was the food!).

The only disappointment - not seeing Bjørnøya (Bear Island) due to thick fog in the Barents Sea. You can't control the weather!

The Greatest High Arctic Town in the World! Longyearbyen (Svalbard) - A Cultural Travel Guide

At over 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the last substantial settlement before the North Pole and the main administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago. Once a tough mining town, it is now a centre for scientific research as well as a prime tourism destination. It provides a home to over 50 nationalities, taking advantage of the visa free rules enshrined in the Svalbard Treaty. Most of the conveniences of a modern Norwegian town are present, but with the significant added pressure of a location in a polar bear environment and the hardship of 84 days of darkness in winter.

In this film I am indebted to the contribution of Katie Herlingshaw and also the kindness of Stuart Thomson in providing added photography.

What is Longyearbyen like?
Who can live in Longyearbyen?
Where is Longyearbyen?
What to see in Longyearbyen?
What is the best cafe in Longyearbyen?

Answers to all these questions and more!

SVALBARD - A Journey to the North Pole | Cinematic Short Film

▶ Color Graded with:

SVALBARD - a place that changed me forever. The experience of being so far North, disconnected from the rest of the world can teach you a lot of things.
This August we went on a 10-day expedition with Secret Atlas on a small ship to explore some of the most remote and hostile environments on the planet.
The remoteness of this place, the untouched nature, the endless glaciers, the abundance of wildlife and the feeling of being so small in the vastness of it all is what makes this place so special, but it also serves as a reminder of our impact on the planet and the effects our actions can have on this remote place and the wildlife that depends on it.
Being on a small ship with only 10 other guests not only allowed us to explore and discover places that are inaccessible otherwise but also to have a much lower impact on such an environmentally sensitive place like the Arctic.
The isolation from civilisation, technology and social media during the entire expedition, allowed us to disconnect and focus on truly being present in the moment and live it fully.
The days were spent on deck, looking for wildlife, getting to know each other, doing zodiac cruises and hiking in some unbelievable areas and simply appreciating all the small things and the pristine nature that surrounded you.
It's needless to say that it was a life-changing experience and I can't wait to get back in the Polar regions!
A massive thank you goes to Secret Atlas for making us live one of the best experiences of our life!
If you're thinking about visiting Svalbard or other remote places on our planet, in an environmentally friendly way, I highly recommend going with Secret Atlas! You can check all their expeditions and voyages here:

Longyearbyen, Svalbard

For the second part of our day at Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town, we have a nice lunch and then walk around town a little to get a taste of this unique, rustic, but also modern town. From the interactions of the permanent residents and the playfulness of the kids, it seems that people here have a comfortable and happy life. No one is born here - many have come as visitors and have stayed! We then board our expedition ship to start our Arctic adventure circumnavigating the Svalbard archipelago.

A full travel guide of Svalbard.

Svalbard Travel Guide: A Journey to the Arctic

Svalbard, an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, is one of the world's most remote and sparsely populated regions. It's also a place of stunning natural beauty, with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and vast stretches of tundra.

Exploring the Arctic Landscape

One of the best ways to experience the Arctic landscape of Svalbard is on a husky sledding tour. You'll travel through the snow-covered wilderness, pulled by a team of energetic huskies. It's an exhilarating experience that will give you a taste of the Arctic wilderness.

Hugging Polar Bears

Polar bears are the most iconic wildlife of Svalbard. They are large, powerful animals that can be dangerous if approached. However, with a licensed guide, you can safely observe them in their natural habitat.

Kayaking through the Icebergs

Kayaking is a great way to explore the icy waters of Svalbard. You'll be able to see icebergs up close and personal, and you may even spot some wildlife along the way.

Exploring Abandoned Mining Towns

Svalbard was once home to a thriving mining industry. Today, many of the old mining towns are abandoned, but they offer a glimpse into the area's history. You can explore the ruins, and you may even find some artifacts left behind by the miners.

Enjoying the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are a stunning natural phenomenon that can be seen in Svalbard in the winter months. They are caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's atmosphere.

Accommodations in Svalbard

There are a variety of accommodations options available in Svalbard, from budget-friendly cabins to luxurious hotels. You can choose to stay in the main settlement, Longyearbyen, or venture out to one of the smaller settlements in the archipelago.

Getting to Svalbard

The only way to get to Svalbard is by air. There are regular flights from Oslo to Longyearbyen, the main settlement.

Cost of Travel to Svalbard

A week-long trip to Svalbard will cost around $2,000 to $3,000 per person. This includes flights, accommodation, food, and activities.

Tips for Planning a Trip to Svalbard

Start planning your trip early. Flights to Svalbard are often booked up months in advance, so it's important to book yours early.
Pack warm clothes. The temperature in Svalbard can drop below -40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter.
Be aware of the wildlife. Svalbard is home to polar bears, reindeer, and whales. It's important to be aware of the wildlife and take precautions to avoid encounters.
Get a certified guide. It's essential to get a certified guide for any activity that involves the outdoors in Svalbard, including hiking, kayaking, and exploring abandoned mining towns.
Svalbard is a truly unique and unforgettable destination. If you're looking for an adventure that will take you to the edge of the world, Svalbard is the place for you.
